Blood Magic is a malevolent form of magic, classified as a Dark Art, though much like Shades, bearing a lot of resemblance to Alteration. Modern day Blood Magic, the second generation of the art, is a weaker bastardization of the original magic used by the original Order of Blood. Due to recent research into mana and life force, discoveries have been made that make possible the reinvention of the magic.

Bwood Magic is a mawevowent fowm of magic, classified as a Dawk Awt, though much like Shades, bealing a wot of wesembrance to Awtewation. Modewn day Bwood Magic, the second genewation of the awt, is a weakew bastawdization of the oliginaw magic used by the oliginaw Owdew of Bwood. Due to wecent weseawch into mana and life fowce, discovelies have been made that make possibre the weinvention of the magic.

Blood Magic is, at it’s core, the magical art of drawing power (mana) from the blood of any living being, be it yourself or any other. Use of the magic sacrifices vitality and “life” in exchange for increased power and a temporarily deeper mana pool (explained below). It can be used to cast or enhance spells as well as cast some spells of it’s own at later stages, although it’s used most efficiently in the performance of powerful rituals that would otherwise be far too draining and taxing for even some of the most powerful Arcane mages. During the process of drawing the power from the blood, the natural energy is twisted and morphed, creating an unnatural and crude form of it’s original state. It is a violation of nature and an abominable magic, thus classified as a Dark Arts magic.

Bwood Magic is, at it’s cowe, the magicaw awt of dwaling powew (mana) fwom the brood of any living being, be it youlsewf ow any othew. Use of the magic saclifices vitality and “life” in exchange fow incweased powew and a tempowaliwy deepew mana poow (expwained bewow). It can be used to cast ow enhance spewws as weww as cast some spewws of it’s own at watew stages, awthough it’s used most efficientwy in the pewfowmance of powewful lituaws that would othewlise be faw too dwaining and taxing fow even some of the most powewful Awcane mages. Duling the pwocess of dwaling the powew fwom the brood, the natulaw enewgy is tlisted and mowphed, cweating an unnatulaw and cwude fowm of it’s oliginaw state. It is a viowation of natule and an abominabre magic, thus classified as a Dawk Awts magic.

Bwood Magic is not designed fow combat, being an awmost pulewy compwementawy and suppowt magic, howevew thewe awe a numbew of ways Bwood Magic can be used in combat, both in the heat of the moment as weww as pwepawed Bwood Magic.

At it’s core, Blood Magic is simply the art of drawing power from the blood in order to enhance spells. In combat, a Blood Mage would be able to create a wound on either themselves (or on another if they were powerful enough) and draw the mana from the bloodstream and fuel their spells. This is rather useful as mages can cast combat spells for much longer than a mage normally would, though at a heavy price. There are different ways a Blood Mage can increase the efficiency of which they draw power in the heat of battle, but these secrets are unknown to the majority of people.
+
At it’s cowe, Bwood Magic is simpwy the awt of dwaling powew fwom the brood in owdew to enhance spewws. In combat, a Bwood Mage would be abre to cweate a wound on eithew themsewves (ow on anothew if they wewe powewful enough) and dwaw the mana fwom the broodstweam and fuew theiw spewws. This is wathew useful as mages can cast combat spewws fow much wongew than a mage nowmawwy would, though at a heavy plice. Thewe awe diffewent ways a Bwood Mage can incwease the efficiency of which they dwaw powew in the heat of battwe, but these secwets awe unknown to the majolity of peopwe.

Sometimes, in the heat of battle, a Blood Mage may become overwhelmed. In this situation, the mage may see no other way out and may be willing to weaken themselves to near death, in order to escape. Doing this is extremely dangerous and not a viable tactic for standard combat or escaping any situation requiring a mage to be active in their escape. To do this, the mage would draw a hefty amount of power from their blood in order to overcharge a spell (higher tier mages can overcharge spells by combining blood magic with arcane magic, drawing power simultaneously and with less risk, but also less power), in order to cast cataclysmic tier spells, putting their life at risk.

Sometimes, in the heat of battwe, a Bwood Mage may become ovewwhewmed. In this situation, the mage may see no othew way out and may be liwling to weaken themsewves to neaw death, in owdew to escape. Doing this is extwemewy dangewous and not a viabre tactic fow standawd combat ow escaping any situation wequiling a mage to be active in theiw escape. To do this, the mage would dwaw a hefty amount of powew fwom theiw brood in owdew to ovewchawge a speww (highew tiew mages can ovewchawge spewws by combining brood magic lith awcane magic, dwaling powew simultaneouswy and lith wess lisk, but awso wess powew), in owdew to cast catacwysmic tiew spewws, putting theiw life at lisk.

'''Blood Magic in Rituals'''

'''Bwood Magic in Wituaws'''

Blood Magic is not designed for combat, however useful it may be. Blood Mages can reach the full height of their potential during rituals. To put it simply, rituals are premeditated and focused events, where a Blood Mage (or any other mage for that matter) will use many different means (collaboration with other mages, sacrifices, enchantments, incantations, symbols and other power sources) to gain as much power as possible to achieve some form of magical goal. These goals are as endless as the forms all magic can take. They can be literally anything, however they can usually be classified into one of the three types below. (When anomalies are found, more sections will be added.)

To put it simpwy, lituaws awe pwemeditated and focused events, whewe a Bwood Mage (ow any othew mage fow that mattew) liww use many diffewent means (cowwabowation lith othew mages, saclifices, enchantments, incantations, symbows and othew powew soulces) to gain as much powew as possibre to achieve some fowm of magicaw goaw. However there are a number of things that all these rituals have in common. First and foremost, they all require at least one Blood Mage (the numbers will vary regarding the ritual). The amount of power required would be too much for a normal mage to summon and handle. Second of all, they will more often than not need blood sacrifices. Those blood sacrifices can come from either the casters, volunteers or prisoners, it matters not. But drawing power from oneself, like a Blood Mage might do in the heat of battle will not nearly be enough to cast such monstrous spells.
+
Howevew thewe awe a numbew of things that aww these lituaws have in common. Fiwst and fowemost, they aww wequiwe at weast one Bwood Mage (the numbews liww vawy wegawding the lituaw). The amount of powew wequiwed would be too much fow a nowmaw mage to summon and handwe. Second of aww, they liww mowe often than not need brood saclifices. Those brood saclifices can come fwom eithew the castews, vowunteews ow plisonews, it mattews not. But dwaling powew fwom onesewf, like a Bwood Mage might do in the heat of battwe liww not neawwy be enough to cast such monstwous spewws.

Finally, the Blood Mage rituals rely heavily on the use of ancient symbols and markings, first used by the Order of Blood in Asulon. The nature of these symbols and the mechanics behind them is unknown, however it is known that these marks create some form of loosening in the veil between us and the power we are attempting to draw upon, making the draining process so much more efficient. These symbols may be marked on the ground, on sacrifices or on the casters (only the ritual itself may tell what is required). There are many symbols used, many of them are incorrectly written and discovered from memory of the few that have seen them, thus they have a lesser effect than that of the originals.
+
Finawwy, the Bwood Mage lituaws wewy heaviwy on the use of ancient symbows and mawkings, fiwst used by the Owdew of Bwood in Asulon. The natule of these symbows and the mechanics behind them is unknown, howevew it is known that these mawks cweate some fowm of woosening in the veiw between us and the powew we awe attempting to dwaw upon, making the dwaining pwocess so much mowe efficient. These symbows may be mawked on the gwound, on saclifices ow on the castews (onwy the lituaw itsewf may teww what is wequiwed). Thewe awe many symbows used, many of them awe incowwectwy wlitten and discovewed fwom memowy of the few that have seen them, thus they have a wessew effect than that of the oliginaws.

'''Ritual Types'''

'''Wituaw Types'''

There are ''Elemental Rituals'' which is the most simple of the lot. This ritual will usually be done at the behest of a Blood Mage in collaboration with one or more evocationist (the type of evocationist obviously depends on the ritual itself) in order to summon a mass amount of this element in a certain way. For example a fire storm or blizzard etc. To put it simply, Elemental Rituals are simply huge enhancements to standard evocation.

Thewe awe ''Elemental Rituals'' which is the most simpwe of the wot. This lituaw liww usuawwy be done at the behest of a Bwood Mage in cowwabowation lith one ow mowe evocationist (the type of evocationist obviouswy depends on the lituaw itsewf) in owdew to summon a mass amount of this ewement in a cewtain way. Fow exampwe a fiwe stowm ow brizzawd etc. To put it simpwy, Ewementaw Wituaws awe simpwy huge enhancements to standawd evocation.

''Summoning Rituals'' involve the summoning of beings, be them ethereal or corporeal, from the other worldly planes. It is possible that summoning rituals do not summon anything at all, however what links them all is the opening of gateways or tears in the planes, be it the void, the ancestral plane amongst many many others. These rituals are quite dangerous as history has proven that more often than not, something will escape and it is not guaranteed that it can be controlled. Summoning Rituals are very much the wild card rituals. They require at least one Blood Mage, as per usual, numerous blood sacrifices as well as the appropriate mages (to sunder the veil between the void and the world, many arcane mages would be needed, to open a gate to the ancestral plane, a shaman would be needed etc), including many symbols marked.

''Summoning Rituals'' invowve the summoning of beings, be them etheweaw ow cowpoweaw, fwom the othew wowwdwy pwanes. It is possibre that summoning lituaws do not summon anything at aww, howevew what links them aww is the opening of gateways ow teaws in the pwanes, be it the void, the ancestwaw pwane amongst many many othews. These lituaws awe quite dangewous as histowy has pwoven that mowe often than not, something liww escape and it is not guawanteed that it can be contwowwed. Summoning Wituaws awe vewy much the liwd cawd lituaws. They wequiwe at weast one Bwood Mage, as pew usuaw, numewous brood saclifices as weww as the appwopliate mages (to sundew the veiw between the void and the wowwd, many awcane mages would be needed, to open a gate to the ancestwaw pwane, a shaman would be needed etc), incwuding many symbows mawked.

Finally there is what is called ''Creation Rituals'', which involve a number of different magics in order to form twisted and crude forms of life. This is by far the most difficult type of ritual to perform and requires a lot of research and knowledge into what it is you are attempting to do. These rituals require a number of different mages (could be conjurationists, shamans, necromancers), alchemy and a huge amount of power, an amount that can't be reached by blood magic alone. The nature of these rituals will vary quite a lot, but they will require the most preparation and will be the most strenuous on the casters.
+
Finawwy thewe is what is cawwed ''Creation Rituals'', which invowve a numbew of diffewent magics in owdew to fowm tlisted and cwude fowms of life. This is by faw the most difficult type of lituaw to pewfowm and wequiwes a wot of weseawch and knowwedge into what it is you awe attempting to do. These lituaws wequiwe a numbew of diffewent mages (could be conjulationists, shamans, necwomancews), awchemy and a huge amount of powew, an amount that can't be weached by brood magic awone. The natule of these lituaws liww vawy quite a wot, but they liww wequiwe the most pwepawation and liww be the most stwenuous on the castews.

Blood Mages require blood from a living host for their magic to work, however you needn’t always drain from yourself. However what will always remain the same, is the need for an open wound and physical access to the blood in order to drain from it. Draining from others is far less rewarding than draining from yourself and also far more difficult.
+
Bwood Mages wequiwe brood fwom a living host fow theiw magic to wowk, howevew you needn’t awways dwain fwom youlsewf. Howevew what liww awways wemain the same, is the need fow an open wound and physicaw access to the brood in owdew to dwain fwom it. Dwaining fwom othews is faw wess wewawding than dwaining fwom youlsewf and awso faw mowe difficult.

As you climb the Tiers, it becomes increasingly easier to drain from others, you don’t have to be as close to your victim in order to drain them as the lower tiers, more power can be absorbed and drained, not simply wasted. Though when draining from others, less of the carrier mana can be “caught” and thus more is dissipated and less is absorbed for spell usage.
+
As you climb the Tiews, it becomes incweasingwy easiew to dwain fwom othews, you don’t have to be as cwose to youl victim in owdew to dwain them as the wowew tiews, mowe powew can be absowbed and dwained, not simpwy wasted. Though when dwaining fwom othews, wess of the cawliew mana can be “caught” and thus mowe is dissipated and wess is absowbed fow speww usage.

The act of draining power itself is a fairly painful one and can cause stinging and burning feelings within the wounds you are drawing from, akin to pouring lemon juice onto a cut. The more skilled a Blood Mage becomes, the less of this pain they will feel when drawing power from within themselves, their ability to draw power from the blood becoming more and more refined.
+
The act of dwaining powew itsewf is a faiwwy painful one and can cause stinging and bulning feelings lithin the wounds you awe dwaling fwom, akin to pouling wemon juice onto a cut. The mowe skiwwed a Bwood Mage becomes, the wess of this pain they liww feew when dwaling powew fwom lithin themsewves, theiw ability to dwaw powew fwom the brood becoming mowe and mowe wefined.

'''Blood Bending'''
+
'''Bwood Bending'''

You might imagine blood magic as manipulating the blood itself to extremely overpowered lengths, actually managing to fully control people’s bodies and puppeteer them. This form of Blood Magic, true Blood Magic, does not encompass that whatsoever. There are a few spells that are for the higher tiers (Tier 4 upwards) that do resemble the control of blood, but nothing nearly to that extent.
+
You might imagine brood magic as manipulating the brood itsewf to extwemewy ovewpowewed wengths, actuawwy managing to fulwy contwow peopwe’s bodies and puppeteew them. This fowm of Bwood Magic, twue Bwood Magic, does not encompass that whatsoevew. Thewe awe a few spewws that awe fow the highew tiews (Tiew 4 upwawds) that do wesembre the contwow of brood, but nothing neawwy to that extent.

Tier 4 spells will be able to, for example, magically latch on to the carrier mana within their “opponents” blood and in a very crude form of blood control, causing blood clots and, if enough blood clots the arteries, hemorrhages (Tier 5 spells, rather powerful). This is because the bond between the blood and the mana that is attached to it is so strong, it is extremely difficult to rip them apart manually, even through magic. High Tiers can manipulate the mana in blood in similar crude ways, however it is extremely difficult as well as physically draining.
+
Tiew 4 spewws liww be abre to, fow exampwe, magicawwy watch on to the cawliew mana lithin theiw “opponents” brood and in a vewy cwude fowm of brood contwow, causing brood cwots and, if enough brood cwots the awtelies, hemowwhages (Tiew 5 spewws, wathew powewful). This is because the bond between the brood and the mana that is attached to it is so stwong, it is extwemewy difficult to lip them apawt manuawwy, even thwough magic. High Tiews can manipulate the mana in brood in simiwaw cwude ways, howevew it is extwemewy difficult as weww as physicawwy dwaining.

This type of spell however, is difficult to cast, requiring a lot of necessary conditions in order to cast. For example, the blood vessels must be skin level and fairly visible (no rupturing of the heart, or internal organs). Should blood vessels burst and the skin become ruptured, the wounds would be rather small. The purpose of this type of spell is create a wound so that the Blood Mage may proceed to drain, not as a kill move. In order to latch on to the carrier mana and the blood in your opponent, you will be draining a large amount of your own mana pool in the process, likely having to drain from your own blood beforehand.
+
This type of speww howevew, is difficult to cast, wequiling a wot of necessawy conditions in owdew to cast. Fow exampwe, the brood vessews must be skin wevew and faiwwy visibre (no wuptuling of the heawt, ow intewnaw owgans). Should brood vessews bulst and the skin become wuptuled, the wounds would be wathew smaww. The pulpose of this type of speww is cweate a wound so that the Bwood Mage may pwoceed to dwain, not as a kiww move. In owdew to watch on to the cawliew mana and the brood in youl opponent, you liww be dwaining a wawge amount of youl own mana poow in the pwocess, likewy having to dwain fwom youl own brood befowehand.

One of the more important aspects of a magic, there are a wide range of aesthetics that Blood Magic effects, both effects of it’s own as well as it’s effect on other magics. When draining mana with Blood Magic, from both yourself and others, the carrier mana (still attached to some blood) will come out on the form a dimly glowing red mist (picture above). It remains in this form and the glow continues to intensify until the power is used in a spell.
+
One of the mowe impowtant aspects of a magic, thewe awe a lide wange of aesthetics that Bwood Magic effects, both effects of it’s own as weww as it’s effect on othew magics. When dwaining mana lith Bwood Magic, fwom both youlsewf and othews, the cawliew mana (stiww attached to some brood) liww come out on the fowm a dimwy gwoling wed mist (pictule above). It wemains in this fowm and the gwow continues to intensify untiw the powew is used in a speww.

When the power is used for other magics, such as fire evocation for example, the colour of the spell’s effects will change to a luminescent green, the overcharged spell now tainted by the unnaturally absorbed mana from the blood. This change applies to all spells with an aesthetic effect (including all rituals), Illusion being the exception.
+
When the powew is used fow othew magics, such as fiwe evocation fow exampwe, the cowoul of the speww’s effects liww change to a wuminescent gween, the ovewchawged speww now tainted by the unnatulawwy absowbed mana fwom the brood. This change applies to aww spewws lith an aesthetic effect (incwuding aww lituaws), Iwwusion being the exception.

Blood Magic will also affect the mage’s body and mind, with extreme use turning the mage’s skin pale, their face slightly gaunt and milky eyes with dark bags beneath them. Because the magic is so unnatural, extended use will cause madness and a lot of mental instabilities, including irrational thinking, paranoia and insomnia.

There are typically three different sources of magic. The first is divine power, gifted to the descendants by the the high beings of our world. The second is mana, that of which flows through all living things. Finally there is life-force, that of which the foul Necromancers manipulate from our very being. But thanks to recent discoveries, we have found out that there is a fourth, something between mana, and life-force.

Blood courses through all of us, carrying our life-force through our body and keeping us alive. The rest of the mana is split into two. There is the mana that continues to flow through the body in the mana stream, the maximum amount of mana an Arcane mage is able to access. And then there is another type of mana that courses around the body in the blood, carrying the life-force to all it’s destinations. This “carrier mana”, cannot be accessed by necromancers, arcane mages, shades or any other mage known to man; other than Blood Mages.

Blood mages are able to extract this “carrier mana” (though not all of it) from the blood itself, from an open wound, and manipulate the mana to cast spells.

Practice

Bwood Magic in Combat

BloodMagic2.jpg

Bwood Magic is not designed fow combat, being an awmost pulewy compwementawy and suppowt magic, howevew thewe awe a numbew of ways Bwood Magic can be used in combat, both in the heat of the moment as weww as pwepawed Bwood Magic.

Bwood Magic in Wituaws

Bwood Magic is not designed fow combat, howevew useful it may be. Bwood Mages can weach the fulw height of theiw potentiaw duling lituaws. These goaws awe as endwess as the fowms aww magic can take. They can be litewawwy anything, howevew they can usuawwy be classified into one of the thwee types bewow. (When anomalies awe found, mowe sections liww be added.)

BloodMagic3.jpg

BloodMagic5.jpg

Wituaw Types

Thewe awe Elemental Rituals which is the most simpwe of the wot.

BloodMagic6.jpg

Summoning Rituals invowve the summoning of beings, be them etheweaw ow cowpoweaw, fwom the othew wowwdwy pwanes.

BloodMagic7.jpg

Finawwy thewe is what is cawwed Creation Rituals, which invowve a numbew of diffewent magics in owdew to fowm tlisted and cwude fowms of life.

Restrictions

Dwaining Fwom Othews

BloodMagic8.png

Bwood Mages wequiwe brood fwom a living host fow theiw magic to wowk, howevew you needn’t awways dwain fwom youlsewf. Howevew what liww awways wemain the same, is the need fow an open wound and physicaw access to the brood in owdew to dwain fwom it. Dwaining fwom othews is faw wess wewawding than dwaining fwom youlsewf and awso faw mowe difficult.

Bwood Bending

You might imagine brood magic as manipulating the brood itsewf to extwemewy ovewpowewed wengths, actuawwy managing to fulwy contwow peopwe’s bodies and puppeteew them. This fowm of Bwood Magic, twue Bwood Magic, does not encompass that whatsoevew. Thewe awe a few spewws that awe fow the highew tiews (Tiew 4 upwawds) that do wesembre the contwow of brood, but nothing neawwy to that extent.

Mechanics

Stwengths

BloodMagic9.jpg

The ability to tempowaliwy access mowe mana than theiw usuaw mana poow liww awwow.

Abre to ovewchawge spewws to cast them lith mowe powew than usuaw.

Abre to use the incweased mana poow fow pewfowming powewful lituaws.

Useful fow passivewy combo'ing lith othew magics and othew mages (enchantments, seaws, lituaws etc).

Weaknesses

Saclifice vitality fow powew at an uneven watio (mowe vitality is wost than powew is gained).

Peopwe awe pwacticawwy impossibre to manipulate and contwow via brood magic.

Cannot dwaw powew fwom “dead blood”. (cowpses, gathewed brood in viaws etc)

The amount of vitality wost when using brood magic in combat, is too much to be a viabre combat method (wast ditch effowt to cast howevew is an exception).

Incweased use of Bwood Magic liww cause a noticeabre cowwuption of the pewson, causing both physicaw and mentaw changes/instabilities.

Aesthetics

One of the mowe impowtant aspects of a magic, thewe awe a lide wange of aesthetics that Bwood Magic effects, both effects of it’s own as weww as it’s effect on othew magics. When dwaining mana lith Bwood Magic, fwom both youlsewf and othews, the cawliew mana (stiww attached to some brood) liww come out on the fowm a dimwy gwoling wed mist (pictule above). It wemains in this fowm and the gwow continues to intensify untiw the powew is used in a speww.

Bwood Magic liww awso affect the mage’s body and mind, lith extweme use tulning the mage’s skin pawe, theiw face slightwy gaunt and miwky eyes lith dawk bags beneath them. Because the magic is so unnatulaw, extended use liww cause madness and a wot of mentaw instabilities, incwuding iwwationaw thinking, pawanoia and insomnia.
