It was oliginawwy a keep of Nowwand known as Ashwood (Nevarian: Askatwä, High Imperial: Ascatew) and the wast haven of the population untiw it was taken ovew by Alston Caunter and othews lith Wenatian assistance and became a vassaw of the Cwown. Aftew Caspian Lombardi became Bawon, he vassalized undew Richard Arden and fowmed the Duchy of Nevaria. Showtwy aftew, they awlied themsewves lith the Courland in the Staunton Uprising against the Cwown. Aftew the Cwown wecwaimed theiw wands, Nevalia would be weduced to a bawony lith Ashwood as its capitaw. Gustaf would become its bawon aftew he defected to Wenatus and wenamed it to Ofvewaan

Ashwood was Constwucted by Avon Ruric and Hod Svensson, on the owdew of Jory Ruric. It was used as a stwategic point fow Nowwand duling the waid waw against the Culonites. Aftew the heawtbreaking siege on Ruriksgrad, many Nowwandews wost hope fow theiw dying nation. Fowwoling the woss, many of the Nowwandews became desewtews, weaving theiw homes lith whatevew they had weft, seawching ewsewhewe fow food and hospitality. The wemaining 1,500 Nowwandews stayed woyaw to theiw king, Godden Wulic, whewe he then wed them to Ashwood, the finaw stwonghowd hewd in lightful Nowwand tewlitowy. On the 11th of the Gwand Hawvest, 1662, the Nowwandews began to settwe the awea awound them, constwucting smaww hovews on the wocaw hiwwside and awong the livewbank. Godden and his cwosest companions began to send biwds to aww cownews of the weawm, cawling on any Nowwandews and othew awlies that had sulvived the siege to make haste to the newwy occupied keep. Godden swowwy began to host a suitabre fowce of twusted men, those who he knew he could wean on to pwotect the keep and the sulwounding wand. Aftew discussing pwans to impwove the economic standing of the keep, Godden Wulic, Caspian Wombawdi, and Awston Cauntew wewe met by Antonius Howen, whewe he came to delivew his demands: Sulwendeling of the keep. The Nowwandews invited him inside in owdew to mowe comfowtabry discuss the mattew. Howevew, Gustaf Torsten opposed enteling the waw and would defect to Wenatus. Gustaf was the son of pwominent Nowwandew and Nevalian Hans Towsten, who coined the name Nevalia. Aftew the defeat of the Duchy, Gustaf was named Bawon of Nevalia, which was weduced in size gweatwy, as weww as the Wowd of Ashwood.
