History

Avar was at first uninhabited by the races but with significant proximity to the dwarven capital it was deemed a necessary holding to secure the Grand Kingdom's borders.

The Adunians were the first to settle on Avar, they founded the holdfast of Hiraeth and remained direct vassals of the Grand Kingdom.

In order to oversee the strategic location and further reinforce the island Grand King Balek Irongut granted the Jarldom of Avar to Clan Lord Fimlin Grandaxe for his clan to establish holdings on the island. As a result the seaside hold of Kal'Valen was founded and all holdings in Avar were vassal lords of the

Thoronir Armakank, former ruler of Polaris and Drakenburgh in northern Athera, and a long-time enemy of the Grandaxes was found to be ruling a small town when the Grandaxes arrived. Soon after being discovered by the Grandaxes, Thoromir was allegedly sending letters and asking for Orenian protection and sanction to take over Avar. Hearing this Fimlin Grandaxe lead a group of his clansmen to apprehend and banish him from

When Balek Irongut went missing at sea, an election was called for the next King, between Verthaik Frostbeard and Skippy Irongut. The Grandaxes voted for Skippy after Verthaik broke the blood pact between their clans earlier. Skippy won the election and was crowned Grand King, but Verthaik Frostbeard was jealous and wanted the throne himself so he rebelled for it with his clan from Tal'Azwyr. The Blackfist clan which dwelt in Kal'Krest was soon called upon to take a side and chose to join the Frostbeard rebellion. The Mountain Monarchy as it was called, marched for the capital of Kal'Akash, and expected Grandaxe help in the effort because of their previous blood pact. Fimlin Grandaxe and his clan however were dwarves of honor and in no way sought to help them. They assembled to help thwart the rebellion in the Battle of the Melting Frost between the two forces and emerged victorious with Skippy

After the suspicious assassination of Grand King Skippy Irongut, Uldar Irongut was elected as Grand King and established the rights of holds and promised to destroy holds of unworthy clans like the Hammerfists. This initially won over the Grandaxe Clan but Uldar had become rather arbitrary in his governance and began to come under question. After a while however he stepped down and appointed his regent Gauldrim Irongut as the new Grand King who then split the Grand Kingdom in two, the mainland Kingdom of Azwyrmor lead by King Gauldrim Irongut and the Kingdom of Avar, lead by Fimlin Grandaxe. This was much to the surprise to the dwarven populace, and the dwarves of Kal'Akash rebelled against Gauldrim and retook the Grand Kingdom. Without hesitation Fimlin Grandace had the Kingdom of Avar rejoin the Grand Kingdom as a Jarldom and restore the status quo.

With down time in Avar, new laws and obligations outlining the Jarldom's governance. To get more inhabitants on Avar, Fimlin Grandaxe granted the old town of Thoromir to Zahrer Irongrinder to found the hold of Järnstrand for his clan. Years passed and a few Grandaxes asked Fimlin to step down being inactive in his duties.

After many years of decline the Adunians had given themselves a new leader who promptly left Avar with his group to vassalize under Oren. Seeing this Fimlin revoked Hiraeth and sold the land to Drynn Ireheart to build a fort. Drynn's progress was slow and he eventually sold it to the Rurics, lead by Edvard I Thorsson Ruric. The Grandaxes did not agree to the deal and went to force a refund but Grand King Rhewen Frostbeard refused to allow them, additionally the mercenary company the Horde of Dunamis threatened war if they revoked the Ruric land. Having no way around both the Grand King and the mercenaries the Grandaxes were forced to compromise.

A short period before the reign of Rhewen, Midgor Ireheart had reigned as Grand King and started a war against Oren. Oren had won the Siege of Rhewengrad and moved on to the Siege of the Iron Mountain but were valiantly repulsed by the dwarves. The Rurics had been hired as mercenaries to fight for the dwarves in the year 1536. The Rurics went on to fight beyond the years lined out in their contract, but eventually ceased their aid, the dwarves felt they had been cheated and declared that the Rurics were rebelling from them, raiding the Norlandic city of Seahelm, causing the Rurics to join Oren. There Oren had a foothold on Avar, without having to pass the strait where the dwarven navy could have intercepted. The Orenian army quickly changed strategy and marched for the fort of Järnstrand and were able to take it over despite the defenses. The Grandaxes evacuated Kal'Valen of valuables and built it to withstand Oren's army. The dwarven siege crew lead by Tharggus excellently took out their siege equipment as far as possible, forcing the Oreners to go the rest of the way unassisted. During the advance both sides took heavy casualties until both armies were broken, a final stand occurred on the very top level of the hold where the last dwarves fought valiantly but were defeated.

With the Grandaxes fully pushed out of Avar, the last holding of the clan became a small logger camp on an island nearby

With the new rulership under the Holy Oren Empire, the Rurics were established in Seahelm and controlled the county of Ostavar (East Avar) on the side closer to Oren. The western half where the Grandaxes dwelt fell into ruin and remained only under the jurisdiction of the crown itself. Järnstrand was kept as a fortress but Kal'Valen was demolished.
