Biography
Early Life
Lady Anne Josephine d’Arkent was born on the 15th of Owyn's Flame, 1836, only minutes before her twin brother, Joseph Alexander, within the halls of Sunholdt during a peaceful time within the Holy Orenian Empire. Anne shared her namesake with her mother, Anne Adelheid of Provins, and maternal grandmother, Princess Anne Caroline of Oren, who was named after the first Empress of Oren, Anne I. Her middle name was from her paternal grandmother, The Princess Imperial, Josephine Augusta. The union of Anne’s parents and their subsequent children were a topic of many whispers as the married couple were first cousins, through a shared grandfather, Emperor Philip II. As such, Anne and her siblings held strong blood ties to the Imperial Family.
At the age of three, Anne’s father passed away from causes generally unknown to the public, leaving her brother, Peter Augustus, as heir to the Duchy of Sunholdt. Following the birth of Anne’s youngest sibling, Johanna Eleanor, her mother temporarily disappeared from her children’s lives, leaving the future of Sunholdt in the hands of distant relatives and tutors. As many tutors set to work at educating the children it was noted that Anne and Joseph were nearly impossible to wrangle into a lesson due to their rambunctious behavior, and when they were able to pull the young lady into a lesson she didn’t graph much. One tutor was even rumoured of saying that “A piece of cookware could outperform the girl in academia.” Due to this general lack of intelligence, Anne was pushed to develop strong social skills to allow for her to build a future.
From a young age Anne was seen frequently in court, usually at the flank of her grandmother, Princess Anne, The Princess Imperial, or her paternal great-aunt, Lady Maisie. The young d’Arkent had quite a vibrant personality within court in her youth, often getting into all kinds of trouble with her twin, whether it be attacking other courtiers or shouting during balls. As the twins grew older, Joseph began to receive serious punishments for his actions while Anne remained generally unpunished, causing a rift between the two which seemingly remains to this day. That isn’t to say Anne didn’t receive her own dose of trauma. Lady Maisie was quite the stickler when it came to etiquette, often harshly scolding the girl at any minor slip-up.
As Anne grew she continued to flourish within the courts and Oren as a whole, becoming a member of the Society of Saint James II, a religious organization led by her great-grandfather, Emperor Philip II. As she entered her early teens, many classist habits of her childhood which many expected to fade, only grew. Such behavior was only worsened by the dethrowning of Emperor Philip II by his grandson, Emperor Philip III. The shift in power elevated the d’Arkent’s status within court, allowing Anne yet another outlet for her classist beliefs. There were even rumors from time to time of the lady assaulting servants within Aster Hall.
