Wilhelm Karl Devereux, regally known as Wilhelm I is the first monarch of the Kingdom of Curonia, reigning from 1703 until his abdication in 1711.

Early Life

Wilhelm Karl Devereux was born to Alfred I of Curon and Linette I on the 4th of the Grand Harvest, 1654, within the Principality of Curon. His very early childhood consisted of that common to a boy of his royal birth, being heavily focused on studies of history and politics, as well as a strong foundation of combat training.

However when he was the mere age of four, his father Alfred I was found mauled to death within the Czena Forest. The Prince had been ambushed by a horde of undead whilst on a leisurely hunting trip, with Alfred fending them off in order for his squire to escape to tell the tale. This was an extremely tragic event, and the prince's death was mourned by the entirety of the principality. Linette then went on to officially declare herself Princess-Regnant, a move that was met by much controversy from the citizenry, as well the further population and political entities of Atlas.

Due to this heavy criticism, Linette abdicated the throne in 1661, the Principality soon being overtaken by the Margravate of Ostmark. From there, Wilhelm led a secluded childhood, the boy being raised by a multitude of people. He officially made his return in 1684, reforming the former principality as a County under the Empire of Man.

Marriage

Wilhelm soon went on to meet a woman by the name of Evelyn Falkenrath, who was a leading architect for Curon. She soon joined the council and orchestrated much of the building and design for the new city. The two fell in love, much to the dismay of Wilhelm's younger brother, Edward, who also harbored feelings for Evelyn. On the 2nd of the Grand Harvest, 1687, the two were wed. Soon afterward, Evelyn and Wilhelm bore their first son, Jarrack I of Curonia.

Adrian War

During an Imperial festival in 1700, Duke Wilhelm was accused of insulting the Duke of Adria, Rabitor Carrion, as well as his son Boris. The details of this, however, were rather vague, with much speculation as to what actually happened. Intending to dissimilate the growing aggression, Emperor Augustus I summoned the leadership of both nations to Imperial Court, however, the Adrian Duke failed to show, instead only sending Belvitz's Maer in his stead. Augustus refused to come to any sure terms without the presence of Duke Rabitor.

Duke Wilhelm soon issued a missive asking for peace between the two duchies, as well as open letters from both the High Pontiff and Imperial Archchancellor in attempts to quell the argument. In response to this, the Adrian Chancellor, Alaric Vladovic released a letter detailing demands to Curon in return for peace, themselves believing Curon to have grown lazy and decadent. The demands included relinquishing Wilhelm's apparent spurs toward Boris Carrion, payment of a sum of 50,000 minas to Adria, and the betrothal of Wilhelm's firstborn daughter, Anabel, to Rabitor Carrion's eldest son, Paul Carrion.

These demands were outright refused from Curon, leading to even more tension between the two nations. Emperor Augustus then declared that the two duchies would meet on the battlefield that coming year. He also stated that no further aggression should be made between Curon and Adria, however Adrian levymen acted out, leading the Imperial Legion to place Adria under martial law.

The two met on the field, Curon heavily outnumbering Adria in infantry forces. The fight was quick and merciless, with Curon routing the Adrian forces in mere minutes.

This dictated the ending of the war, and the newly coronated Duke Paul Carrion of Adria and Duke Wilhelm met alongside their respective councils in a peace summit. A peace treaty was signed, and Adria issued a formal apology, as well as providing a Carrion daughter for betrothal to a son of Devereux.

Formation of a Kingdom

After the victory against Adria, Emperor Augustus saw fit to bestow the title of a kingdom upon Curon. The coronation occurred on the 8th of The Deep Cold, 1703. It was a formal affair, however, during the official ceremony, a rogue bandit attempted assassination upon the Emperor. The Nauzican guard were quick to act, pulling Augustus to the ground and thus saving his life. Unfortunately, that left Archchancellor Edward H. Morris in the firing line, leading him to be shot in the stomach, to which he later made a full recovery from.

This led the Duchy of Curon to be regally titled the Kingdom of Curonia

Regency

Five years after being declared a kingdom, the aging King Wilhelm saw it fit to pass on the leadership of Curonia to his eldest son, Crown-Prince Jarrack of Curonia due to his inability to properly lead the kingdom during the violent times of the Vaeyl. He bestowed his son with the titles of Prince-Regent, himself retaining the crown and superior power.

Archchancellor of Man

Wilhelm was granted the position as archchancellor of man under Emperor Antonius I. As quotes by himself, he served an Emperor prone to vanishing, and an vacant privy council.

Abdication

At the turn into the year 1711, King Wilhelm decided to abdicate the throne and titles of Curonia to his eldest son and heir, Jarrack I of Curonia. He however still retained his positions as Grand Knight of the Ursus, as well as Archchancellor of Man.

Wilhelm died on the 17th of the Sun's Smile, 1715- his cause of death being presumed suicide at the turn of the Renatian-Orenian War, due to holding oaths to both the Empire, and the rebelling Curonia.
