High Pontiff Everard VI

The Michaelite Schism, or the Petty Schism, was a short schism in the Church of the Canon orchestrated by Holy Orenian Emperor Philip III, his Holy Orenian Empress Anastasia, and Prince Olivier II of Savoy to take control of the Church from High Pontiff Everard VI. The schism lasted one month, and ended with the condemnation and renunciation of the schism by Philip III and Olivier II, and the exile of Michael I. Philip, Anastasia, and Olivier were all made to undergo walks of penance to Karosgrad, during which they were insulted and had tomatoes and other waste thrown at them before publicly asking the Pontiff's forgiveness.

Prelude

Philip Aurelian, the Duke of Adria, was murdered by an unknown assailant in 1854 and Philip II was deposed in a palace coup by his grandson, Prince Philip Amadeus. High Pontiff Everard VI had been an ally of the former Emperor and his Archchancellor Princess Josephine, often having to reject claims that he acted only in Philip II's interest, and so was distrusted by the new Imperial administration. The Pontiff had also clashed heads with the new Imperial Vice-Chancellor, Prince-Emeritus Olivier of Savoy, over Savoyard raids and attacks against Yong Ping and Rozania, whom Everard had been attempting to convert to Canonism. Everard, however, had crowned Philip III almost immediately following his coup and had reaffirmed Philip III's position as Emperor in Quindecimus Aurea Bulla Providentia, making it known that he intended to work with the new administration as he had with the previous one.
