The Cove of Freeport, known more simply as Freeport is a free Duchy located in the Southern continent of Nyrheim. It is a large port city that maintains a great deal of independence from other nations. It is home to a great deal of privateers, sailors, and merchants who don't wish to travel through the port on their way to the greater seas or returning from a long journey.

History

Founded in 1 SA by Captain Leopold de Helena and Theodore Mane Freeport was established to provide a safe haven for all freemen who wished to sail the sea without being shackled by any overlord or greater power. The port-city's original Captain Constitution of Freeport has been re-written to make the authority of the Captain, now the Lord Admiral, greater in 15 SA with the announcement of the Admiralty Establishment Edict. This solidified the executive authorities of the Lord Admiral and the Helm positions below him.

Culture and Society

The Cove of Freeport at its inception was made to act as a travel and trade hub for all people. Merchants, sailors, and other seafarers will naturally travel through or by Freeport in their movements between the river deltas of the Northern continent and the East-West corridor to the greater seas. All sorts of commodities and valuables are traded or moved through Freeport due to its location and the local government's extremely loose restrictions on trade. One of the most profitable and common export is rum, whiskey, tequila, and other spirits. Owing to the abundance of alcohol in Freeport the free citizens of the Cove have taken up drinking as a favored pastime. Be it a citizen drinking casually in a social setting to a great party with one's crewmates a free citizen will always welcome the offer to drink. It is not rare for the local tavern to run dry by the end of a week as sailors return from the seas. Being a predominantly sailor community many of the wealthy residents of Freeport own and maintain a ship and crew. The shipwrights of the port are renowned for their skills; getting to exercise their trade daily.

Government

Freeport maintains a unilateral system of government composed of the Admiralty of Freeport which enables a secondary executive authority known as the Sea Senate. The Admiralty is headed by the Lord Admiral who acts as the head of state and autocrat tasked with administering the Cove of Freeport in all matters. The Sea Senate is a body of representatives afforded ducal prerogative by the Lord Admiral. It is comprised of various representatives from the jurisdictional bodies of Freeport known as the Sea Lords who each hold a single seat known as a Helm. The Sea Senate is responsible for electing new Lord Admirals and vote on any matter of state.

Economy

The economy of Freeport is extremely unrestricted. Many free citizens of the Cove make wages through serving as privateers, crewing ships, shipwrighting, and selling their own goods. The largest export of Freeport is alcohol but fishing comprises a large sector of the economy as well as selling resources found in the deep waters and the cove itself.

Geography

The Cove of Freeport sits along the Eastern coast of the East-West middling sea between the Northern continent and the Southern continent. A great desert, rocky shoreline, and deep bay define the geography of the port-city.
