Winterfell

Winterfell was a Human military establishment of Oren north-east of Al'Khazar in Aegis. It was established as a northern frontier against the assaults of the Undead. In 1340 it was the last northern settlement to fall to the Undead as part of their conquest of the North.

History

Winterfell was founded by Lord Nairog Stark to serve as the northern military outpost for Oren. The Central keep housed many cells for prisoners who had been deemed unfit for society and were sent to the cold solitary north as punishment for their crimes. After time, Lord Nairog Stark redesigned the town dividing it with a wall to separate the military and residential areas of the town. These had gates and any one wishing to enter were required to report to a guard.

As the Undead threat started to loom over the north, Fantasti, Winterfell's scout constructed an additional two watchtowers to the north of Winterfell overlooking the bridge to Alstion and to the south overlooking the King Edmund Bridge. Shortly after this the attack on the north started, Alstion and Snowy Fields lay in ruins. Winterfell was the last bastion in the north, many men and women came to defend it but the threat of an attack soon started to fade. Due to the number of people coming to Winterfell in this time the "Winterfell Travelers Lodge" was built, as free shelter for those who traveled long and far. And as the threat subsided, so did those who stood to protected the town.

A graveyard was built, for those who had passed on whilst laying down their lives to Winterfell and not shortly after it was fenced off, Lord Nairog Stark passed away. His grave, located opposite the entrance, was fittingly overlooked by a large tree, for while he ruled over Winterfell the tower looked over the town much as the tree then looked over his tomb.

After the noble and ever-watchful Lord Nairog Starks passing, the town stood almost desolate, with less than a handful of occupants. Though, this soon changed. The towns Lordship was given to Lord Pampo Perea and Lady Dawn Perea and with their arrival the once cold, lifeless and solitary settlement began to change. The once long standing Prison Tower, the solemn monolith which shadowed the town, was torn down. This marked the beginning of a new era for Winterfell. Many new homes where constructed, vast farmland was tilled and many travelers passed through the gates.

Following the blight of Al'Khazar by Undead the city received a high number of refugees. In 1340 Winterfell also fell to the Undead, along with most other Human cities in the north.

Economy

As Winterfell was located far from the main trade hub that was Al'Khazar, it had to rely greatly on the resources which it had at hand. Since the arrival of Lord and Lady Perea, the town's economy had begun to slowly develop due to the opening of Dawn's Bakery and a blacksmith.

Lumber

There were vast forests to the south-east of Winterfell which had sections fenced off to allow controlled areas of lumberjacking without having it spread through the whole forest. A path to the forest connected to the farmland near the entrance to the town.

Ore

There was a large mine located underneath Winterfell, the entrance found within the Military area of the town as to regulate who used the mine.

Inns

The Winterfell Travelers Lodge was expanded and redesigned during the prosperity brought by the Pereas.

Military

Winterfell's history of being a military garrison was a constant presence in the town. Within the military area of the city there were barracks for the guards as well as a large mess hall which provided access to the walls. There were some training areas where the guard could practice their accuracy with a bow or their hand to hand combat.

The Guard

The guards of Winterfell used to be referred to as Watchmen under the past Lords rule. Edward Talbot was the last guard leader and had several men under his command.

Architecture

The architecture of Winterfell made use of oak logs as support and white walls insulated with wool to keep the buildings warm. The homes were generally one floor high and had a basement, with their sleeping quarters commonly in the roof space. Also due to the cold, each home was fitted with an open fire. The military buildings such as the walls and the lower keep, made use of strong cobblestone throughout the construction as it is sturdy and resistant to fire.

Surrounding Area

Winterfell was situated near a vast frozen lake which could be treacherous to cross on foot, hence the two long bridges which spanned its frozen surface leading back to Al'Khazar. The land around the town was relatively flat with the exception of where the Farmhouse was located. There was also a large, thick forest to the east and south east of the town, which was where the lumber was harvested. Further east was a large area of farmland and a windmill which supplied the town with plentiful harvests, despite the cold. Further afield there was a settlement to the south called New Alstion, a tribute to Alstion which fell to the Undead.
