Biography

Early Life

Fabian Otto Kortrevich was born to Count Matviy Arthem Rahoul and Countess-Consort Viorica Irene Kortrevich on the 11th of the Grand Harvest, 1900. The third of triplets, the birth of his elder sisters and him took a great toll on Viorica’s health, while his own survival was hardly guaranteed. His eldest sister, Ileana Stefaniya Kortrevich, took the mantle as heiress; and once both mother and son had recovered, the triplets soon became elder siblings to another three children.

While Fabian's health continued to falter, his childhood was idyllic, spent in the County of Jerovitz on Almaris. He received an education befitting a noble child, though claimed to have failed etiquette lessons thrice and history twice, and became infamous for pulling pranks on family and guests alike. This otherwise merry youth came to an abrupt end at the age of eight, when the decapitated head of the Dame Ada ‘the Dauntless’ Colborn was revealed to both Fabian and Amaya Colborn, later Queen-Consort Amaya of Venzia. Fabian, a student of the Dame, displayed an intense traumatic response to this turn of events; he would remain in seclusion in the County of Jerovitz for the next eight years.

Re-Entrance into Society

Fabian re-emerged into society with the publication of a light-hearted pamphlet titled The Flowers of Jerovitz. Though still sickly and unfamiliar to the other youth of his generation, he proceeded to command the family business established by his grandparents, offering tarot readings in its attic office and a number of handcrafts and bouquets in its storefront.

At seventeen, Fabian debuted alongside Ileana at her Hauchmetvas. The party was a known disaster: several allegations were made against the twins’ uncle, Ser Vladrik ‘the Houndsman’ O’Rourke, and when the man himself arrived, the matter escalated into promises of a duel between him and the Duke of Vidaus, Aleksandr var Ruthern. After dismissing the guests, Fabian received word that Vladrik had been found mutilated in the fields of Karosgrad. As the eldest available Kortrevich, it fell to him to identify the body; which he affirmed as Vladrik’s, though it lacked many notable features of the late Knight. The investigation failed to procure any viable leads, and Vladrik’s remains were thus released to Fabian, though were never interred in the Kortrevich crypts.

This string of misfortunes gave way to the revitalization of the Bull Post, an endeavor spearheaded by the late Countess Esmee Kortrevich, which the young Lord began to publish as part of the family business’s operations. Though he occasionally reported on political and social events, the Post primarily served to address and mitigate the scandals of the House Kortrevich.

The revitalization effort swiftly bore fruit in 1918, when Fabian published the first report on the Duke of Adria’s trial before the Pontiff. Shortly thereafter, Adrian soldiers captured Fabian in a raid on the Royal Capital. A footsoldier recognized him as “the paperboy,” and in exchange for his life he was to write and publish a letter of fealty to Adria. The young lord included a cipher in this missive declaring it was coerced, and after his release, managed to return to Karosgrad. Disgraced, he imposed a moratorium on printing and took his deceased uncle’s position of Master of the Hunt in the Morrivi Prikaz. He would also debut for a second time alongside Ileana at the Balianese Symposium Pragma of 1920. The social season was ultimately canceled after the passing of King Alexander; however, Fabian would spend the next eight years courting Augustina Catella d’Arkent, granddaughter of the late King and, later, his wife.

At some point after his 1920 debut, Fabian lost his right hand; supposedly the result of an unaccompanied hunting incident. He would not receive a replacement for several years, and was afterwards functionally ambidextrous. His penmanship, however, never recovered, and he was reliant on printing presses for the rest of his life.

While handless, Fabian resisted direct involvement in the Almaris Haeseni-Adrian conflict; instead lifting the moratorium on the Post in 1922 when allegations emerged that Adria had begun forcing yet more of prisoners-of-war to publish decrees in their favor. Fabian also utilized the Post in 1923 in the disownment of Virgil Samuil Kortrevich, his own brother, after his attempt to murder the Lady Astrid Parvana Kortrevich.

Appointment to Grand Lord

The ascension of Sofia of Hyspia to Queen-Consort led to the retirement of Viorica, whom Fabian then succeeded. He proposed his first court reforms in this period, even as he was often called to serve as an auxiliary medic on the fields of the Mori Wars: though unlicensed, the Dual Kingdoms faced a severe shortage of healers. Fabian was present at both the Siege of Fenn, a stalemate for Haense, and the Fall of Karosgrad, a resounding failure which signaled the Continent’s imminent fall. Afterwards, he clung to his post as Grand Lord in the refugee camps of Savoy and drafted further reform proposals throughout the Descendants’ journey to Aevos.

While in the Caves of Heliivryn, a convoluted and public dispute led to the public disownment of Aleksandr Kortrevich, later Aleksandr Amador, Baron-Consort of Mondstadt. Though Ileana would retract this decision and never codified it in writing, Fabian would request his sister reestablish and grant him the post of House Archivist, solidifying his position as her second-in-command and allowing him more formal ability to guard the House’s reputation. Fabian did not reside with the rest of the displaced Haeseni while on Failor. He and his secretary, Alasdair Baruch, instead established a homestead on the northwest of the continent; bringing with them Marian Blackwood, a ward of the Court; Augustina d’Arkent; Walter Weiss, the young heir to the House Weiss; and Amaya Colborn, by then betrothed to the Grand Prince. The party lived in simple log cottages, and the Amaya and Fabian would later report debating a number of foundational reforms while in this retreat.

The Haeseni arrival to Aevos was shortly followed by the wedding of Aleksandr Otto and Amaya, an event to which Fabian was personally invited and, as he had for Sofia of Hyspia, provided floral arrangements. Immediately thereafter began the sixth Haeseni social season, which as Grand Lord, Fabian was expected to preside over. He postponed his own wedding to attend to the season, and he and Augustina would wed later that next year: however, the death of Georg I, his uncle, made public celebration inappropriate, and the pair instead had a quiet ceremony in Balian – officiated by the High Pontiff Sixtus V, and on the morning of the late King’s funeral.
