Athin is a light blue algae. Found under frozen ponds, lakes, and rivers and beneath glaciers and icebergs, Athin is inflammable and cold to the touch. It is generally used to create flame-resistant materials.
Contents
Description
As an algae, Athin resembles kelp, with small, leaf-like structures (blades) that are light blue in color. On land, the blades clump together, forming a mass resembling moss. Athin is cold to the touch. While it is less cold than Frost Vine and does not produce a numbing effect, prolonged contact with Athin can induce hypothermia. Athin is also distinguished by its inflammability. It is resistant up to temperatures around metals' melting points, when it spontaneously combusts.
Habitat and distribution
Beneath the ice atop frozen ponds, lakes and rivers in any landscape below freezing point, as well as beneath glaciers and icebergs
Cultivation
Athin can not be cultivated
Harvesting
Athin is found beneath ice, such as growing within frozen lakes or clinging to the bottom of icebergs, and can only be harvested by scraping it off of the surface it is on. As a result, Athin requires the harvester to enter the frozen water or pull the ice out. Athin can not be farmed, making it a dangerous to collect but valuable plant. Currently, it can be found deep within the ice spikes in the north.
Uses
The base plant of Athin is completely flame retardant, inflammable up to temperatures similar to the melting point of most metals, where in such extremes it will combust. It has no desirable effects from consumption, though when dried and ground to a powder it can be boiled with fabrics and leather to make it fire resistant, or alternatively mixed with lard to wax onto metal objects for a similar use. It is also notably cold to the touch; whilst less potently cold than Frost Vine, Athin can still induce hypothermia after prolongued use in the wrong environment.
Alchemical
Athin is a common ingredient in potions related to coldness, ice, and related effects, such as paralysis.
