The Elven Cold War was a rivalry between the Dominion of Malin, the Conclave of Gladewynn, and the Isle of Aegrothond. The conflict was spurred by the assassination of High Prince Abelas Caerme'onn.

History

In the Bronze Rebellion, three Elven men rose to prominence: Kairn Calithil, the son of the preceding reigning High Prince of the Dominion of Malin, Khaine Csarathaire, and Belestram Sylvaeri the descendant of the last High Prince of Malinnor, Eleron Sylvaeri. In the years that followed the Reconstruction Period after the war, the three men were made princes, and became prominent members of the reformed government.

However, the rivalries between the three men would cause a fissure to form within the decaying Dominion of Malin, and close to forty-years after reconstruction had begun the rivalries grew even more vicious. The three men had agreed to set the precedent that each reigning Royarch would serve one-term and not return to the title. However, Belestram had expressed the intent that he be named Kairn Calithil's successor following the tumultuous War of the Loftywoods and the subsequent annexation of the Barrowlands. However, when Kairn Calithil resigned, he had not told his council nor did he tell any of his contemporaries. Without a word, the King had simply walked up to Abelas Caerme'onn upon returning to the city, and then placed his own crown upon the younger Elf's brow, before simply turning and walking away to sit on a bench in the city square.

With that, the Elvenking Abelas Caerme'onn received confirmation from the Upper Council, and was deemed the heir to Elvendom. Abelas decreed that Belestram Sylvaeri would become his Lord Diplomat and that Arwenia Ithelanen cement the position as Annilir, the leader of the Order of Virarim - the Elven military. Murmurs of another war were heard now, a war against the Kingdom of Kaz'Ulrah, a Dwarvish state ruled by the Frostbeards who had rebelled and dissolved the Grand Kingdom of Urguan. Belestram Sylvaeri advocated for the war and persuaded King Abelas that it was in the Dominion of Malin's best interest to intervene, despite the counter argument from Arwenia and Kairn that the country was unprepared for another war. Abelas stated that if the Kingdom of Renatus agreed to stay out of the conflict, he would support the Urguani claimant.

Under that pretense, the [1] was signed. Eventually, the realization dawned that the Kingdom of Renatus would stand side-by-side with the Frostbeards as they had in the past, and the Elvenking Abelas then made it apparent that the Dominion of Malin would not sally to the aid of the Urguani rebels. Enraged, they came to host a diplomatic meeting wherein Atandt Irongrinder decapitated Elvenking Abelas as the Virarim and Elven councilors stood their in horror. In response, Kairn Calithil returned home from the countryside, and the Ithelanens and Kaz'Ulrah military seized the city, and the Urguani assassins were chased out of the city. Kairn arrested Belestram Sylvaeri and then while wiping the blood off the crown with a cloth, turned and put it on Renn Vaeloryïs' brow.

Kairn challenged Belestram to a duel to decide whether he had been responsible for Abelas' assassination, and then Belestram refused. The two reached the consensus that they would have their champions fight for them. Kaz, Aneirin, and Kairn elected to be the King Abelas' champions, and Belestram selected his own son Feanor Sylvaeri and two mercenaries to fight them. The Alderfolk won and then upon drawing first blood, spared the three combatants and let them return to their homes. Kaz severed Belestram's hand and then exiled him from the Dominion of Malin.
