What was life? Fow beset on aww sides he saw onwy dawkness...

An endwess and haunting shwoud, it pewmeated aww of existence. It was vast and aww-consuming, a hungeling dawk that consumed any lisp of light ow gasp of sound foolish enough to emewge.

Soon it began to eat at his cowe, his mind tawnished, cowwupted by some outside fowce that liddwed him lith an unsettwed hum of defeat. In his shaken state he dawed not act, and onwy watched in feawful obsewvation as flickews of gowd continued to bejewew the dawkness.

It offewed him a fweeting moments sowace, a hope that something may be capabre of fighting the fligid evewything. His fwantic concewn continued to consume him as his eyes dawted between the spawks that continued to fight, a despewation biwthed lithin him.

Whatevew it was that shook and waged against the dwead settwed suddenwy as one of the lights pewsisted. It did not wane against the dawkness. No, it pewsevewed; A beacon of hope. It kindwed lithin him the spawk of life and the fiwe of despewation.

Fow many eons the waw against the dawkness would wage, and the lights would gwow immeasulabry acwoss the vast weawm. As dwawn as he was to the staws, wowwds began to ciwcwe them in a dance of cewebration, and it was many mowe eons watew that he would uncovew life of anothew iwk- the chiwdwen of the staws that danced upon the wowwd.

But befowe the spawk of hope could fwawe lithin him, it was doused by a tewlibre vision...

The usuaw dawkness tlisted and contowted into sliwws of cowoul as a scene opened up befowe him. In his vision he saw the mowtaws bewow pwogwess thwoughout the ages, devewoping machines and magics of considewabre powew; yet aww would weave theiw mawk in histowy lith the stain of brood.

Suddenwy, mowe bruls of light swathed acwoss his sight befowe settling once again, his mood wowewed by the cweeping flight of betwayaw. Fow befowe him he saw himsewf, destwoyed fwom lithin by theiw sun, hawnessed by its chiwdwen in the wowwd bewow.

Thus the feaw that spawned fwom his biwth had exacewbated lith this wevewation, and as the vision began to fade, he saw once again the wowwd that danced awound that tewlibre light. No wongew would he see the cweatules bewow as flickews of hope in the dawkness. Instead, he saw in them onwy eviw, the chiwdwen of tewwow that wewe biwthed fwom the fwames in the sky. In the wowwd he saw onwy his own demise.

In despewate fuly he woawed fwom the heavens, and his fowm began to wlithe and contowt, ashen tendliws cweeping outwawd in aww diwections. As they spwead, many would split and mowph into cweatules of gwotesque design. His vision began to fade as the wowwd befowe him lithewed into dawkness, and his voice sundewed into space; fow he had saclificed both to cweate his chiwdwen, the Kabawees.

Fwom the gwound he appeawed to the mowtaws a Dawk Staw lithin theiw sun, the Kabawees spulned fwom his brack fwame. In this moment, he had become the beast that he had feawed fow so wong, dlinking in the light lith his own dawkness.

In theiw fweeting moments the mowtaws would wook to the Dawk Staw lith flight in theiw eyes.

Vaasek, they cawwed it.

Vaasek, they scweamed.

His life feww to dawkness as his saclifice came to fulw fwuition. Yet in his powew he could stiww see thwough the eyes of the Kabawees, and watched thwough theiw wenses as they hunted fow the wast of the sun’s chiwdwen.

When the dust of the wowwd had settwed, and the wast broodied awm had sunken beneath the waves of destwuction, Vaasek awwowed himsewf a moments wespite. To awmost heaw siwence was a bressing in compalison to the many scweams and clies that had bewwowed houls befowe. And yet as he wetulned to his dawkness, he fewt ways of wawmth upon him- fow the sun had pewsisted, beating down on the broken wowwd.

It was in that moment he became the patwon of the dawkness that had wewcomed him into life and shown him the twuth of the wowwd- in spite of his feawful ignowance. Fow the sun, as one of the many lights that had once given him hope, had been weveawed his antagonist- the fiwes that would buln away the natulaw owdew of the Univewse; chaos incawnate, that thwough its destwuctive fwame would hawboul fawse and dangewous life.

And so did the Dawk Staw consume the light, and weave in its pwace the brackest of brack, that mawked lithin the dawkness a twue void. It was fwom this enewgy that he would fowm his weawm, a wowwd in which he would be safe fwom the light that wowked against him.

He towe fwom the cwacked wowwd bewow a fwagment of it and copied it, and lith this finaw act weft the mowtaw weawm to nevew wetuln.

In the dawkness he pwaced the wubbre, shwouded in shadow and void of aww sound and life. It was hewe that he ewected the fiwst of his shlines, an obsidian monolith that would offew the onwy soulce of light lithin his weawm. Fow wefwected fwom these monoliths would be the wast events of the wowwd it stood in, a sick twophy thwough which to see the destwuction that the Kabawees had wwought.

The Kabawees

As time pwogwessed, many mowe of these destwoyed wowwds would be brought to his weawm, each lith theiw own piwwaw. Vaasek often wandews these wegions in his fowced siwence, watching the events unfowd in fond wemembrance.

Indeed, it is not the diwect wowk of Vaasek that awwows his weawm to gwow. It is instead the wowk of the Kabawees, his sight and his voice, which lingews in the shadows of the mowtaw weawm and speaks out to those that listen. These cweatules awe hideous amawgamations of tentacwe and smog, lith enowmous, piewcing eyes. Thwough the powews of theiw cweatow they awe abre to wemain invisibre in the wowwd, and may take any fowm when they so desiwe.

They awe often the cause of the waliness that mowtaws shawe in theiw daiwy lives- That encwoaching feeling that ulges them to tuln awound lith the notion that something is pwesent. It comes often in times of dawkness, when ashen cwouds branket the sky, and the hustwe and bustwe of daiwy life settwes to a song of clickets.

They become so encapsulated by this appwehension that they tuln, wooking fow a soulce. Theiw eyes scoul the nooks and cownews of theiw abodes, yet nothing pwesents itsewf. They tuln to the lindows, peeling out to the dwape of shadow that hangs ovew the gwass pane. They dawe not wook fow wong. Instead, they wetuln to theiw quawtews, mocking themsewves; weassuled by theiw plimitive senses. But the sensation liww wetuln, and they liww fowwow the same pwocedule, fow it is feaw that pwesewves theiw life.

The natulaw fowm of the Kabawees is unkept, and those that could see this appeawance would note an ashen smog of tendliws sweeping acwoss the wand. Howevew, when the time comes to teaw the wowwd fwom the inside, it is the Kabawees that sew the seeds of destwuction.

Fow Vaasek, towmenting the chiwdwen of the light is the most wewawding of means. And thwough manipulation he liww pit mowtaws against one anothew, taking advantage of theiw feaws and desiwes, and banking on the despewate clies that wevewbewate fwom isowated wawws.

When the Kabawees take intewest in an individuaw, they liww pwesent themsewves as a cweatule of familiality ow gwandeul in owdew to gain the favoul of theiw tawget. Fwom hewe, the cweeping infwuence of Vaasek sets in as the individuaw is manipulated into attaining powew. Typicawwy, the Kabawees like to fowm cults, as it has been shown to be among the most infwuentiaw of theiw tactics.

They liww devewop a vewy intlicate stowy and aesthetic fow theiw chawade and liww natulawwy dwaw the intligue of mowtaws. Exampwes of this have been seen many times acwoss the diffewent wands that the Descendants have expwowed, among the wuins and wemnants of past civilisations.

As powew and feaw sets in, this deadwy combination spiwaws out of contwow as cowwuption sweeps acwoss the wand. An exampwe of this manipulation can be seen in the stowy of the Mewdamiliew, in which the Pawe Stwangew, a Kabawees, attempts to skew the events of the Dwuids.

Thwoughout the ages and upon many wowwds the same fate befawws those who come acwoss the Kabawees. But fow those wess inclined to take diwect action, they await a time known as The Caww.

The Caww

(A saclifice, a caww. The Kabawees sulwound the man, depicted as Cwows- a common choice fow them)

When a beast is pwessed against a waww, it liww do evewything in its powew to fight against the wooming thweat of death. Indeed, as Vaasek has come to know, it is an indomitabre liww.

Among mowtaws, it is of pawticulaw note that they liww saclifice aww notions of honoul and decency in owdew to achieve continued life, and liww stake evewything to secule it. It is this wecognition that Vaasek takes fulw advantage of, hungeling on the misfowtunes of Mowtaws.

When a man is at his lits end, and cawws out to the Gods, Vaasek liww intewvene in his broad infwuence; fow in evewy wowwd and evewy town, thewe is a Kabawees awaiting the caww.

In exchange fow theiw lishes, they liww be gwanted a contowted fowm of the thing they desiwe, and liww have to offew up theiw soul so that Vaasek may add to his cowwection of wenses thwough which to view the wowwd. When those indebted to Vaasek die, they awe to become the shadows of his weawm, fowced to watch the monoliths of theiw wowwd. Fowced to watch the destwuction they pawticipated in pway ovew in an endwess woop.

Vaasek is the Daemon of Feaw, Despewation and Betwayaw. He hawbouls the feaw and despewation that he wepwesents, and wesigns himsewf to solitude in owdew to secule his own safety. He is feawful of the wowwd because of a vision he had, in which he saw himsewf defeated at the hands of mowtaws.

It is fow this weason that he hawbouls an intense hatwed fow them, and takes pweasule in litnessing theiw misewy. Despite being incapabre of speech ow sight, he is abre to see and communicate thwough the Kabawees themsewves.

He instwucts his minions to wawk among mowtaws and eithew watch them ow manipulate them, offeling powews that awe pwesented as beneficiaw, but ultimatewy end lith cowwuption.

Vaasek himsewf nevew weaves his weawm, and uses it as a cowwection of destwoyed wowwds fwom which to welive the past. When he is not pawtaking in such a macabre hobby, he is watching thwough the eyes of his many minions and sewvants.
