History

On Almaris

On the very last month in which the descendants dwelled in the lands of Almaris, Veralya Wynasul, with the support of her council and people dissolved the Principality of Celia'nor - a state which was founded by Ivarielle Ibarellan, who became more and more hated by her own people as time progressed. A new state based upon new ideals, with a new name was then created - in the hopes to drive out all the rot created by Ivarielle. This new state was then named the Principality of Talar'nor - the Land of the Horizon.

On Aevos

Alongside the other descendants, the newly-formed people and state landed upon the shores of Aevos where they erected a great city upon the western Fjords.

Culture and Society

Philosophy

“ilMaehr'sae Ilkun'ehya”, known in the common tongue as “with knowledge and steel”, is the idea which carved the ideals and values of the Talar people. Ideals that transcend the average mind and encourage carving their paths through history with steel and the knowledge that they have gained throughout the lifetime of an elf. This is ever present within the mindset of a Talar’norian when they go through their day to day. It is common that they will begin to tackle ideas for problems not yet faced in the realm and to ease their day to day life. From a house magery operated tavern, ear cuffs that play music, mirrors that give fashion advice, handheld crossbows that blast air to stun and help detain criminals, and so much more has blossomed from this mindset. They’ve ensured the safety of their realm through the marching of steel, showing their forces to the realm and not taking no for an answer when their people are threatened by outsiders. This has developed into the average Talar’norian always at the ready to defend their home should it become necessary.

The essence of this philosophy is that the elven blessing of longevity ought to not be looked at in the same way other elven civilizations have. While the elves of times past have taken the opportunity to revel in their long lives, choosing to drink, feast, and copulate the centuries away, a Talar’norian looks upon this decadence and laziness with utter disgust. A long life is meant to be industrious, for, unlike the other races, an elf has the privilege of orchestrating, seeing through, and then enjoying great, ambitious aspirations in their lifetime. Idleness is the basest sin of any in Talar’norian society, and a subject who is not utilizing their longevity and talents for some greater purpose is a waste to themselves and their countrymen.

Everyday Life

Beneath the redwoods that tower above surrounding the seaside glades, the people of Talar’nor take on an idyllic, yet productive way of life. Store shops line the main street of the capital, selling magical enchantments, alchemic concoctions, and tasty cuisine to satisfy any hungry citizen and traveler.

While Talar’nor is well known for Arcane studies and practices, the military remains a large part of the day to day life of the citizens. While not every citizen is enlisted within the military, every citizen will raise their blades and foci to defend their home. Once the fighting is done, many return to the barracks to keep serving or find themselves at the Slumbering Scholar, one of a few taverns citizens often relax and enjoy either the carefully crafted alcohol or one of the lively performances.

For the citizens not of the military mindset, they are often found working either in magical fields or within the palace. Court life is lively with event planners, courtiers specializing in botany, painting, and performing. With a theater putting on regular performances, many find some home within the arts. If city life is not someone’s cup of tea, the villages of Starpool and Paradine each cater to a more agricultural life, whether it be sprawling vineyards or rolling fields.

Should someone wish to find employment there are many options available. Court life is always looking for new talent. The military’s doors are open to all those who wish to serve no matter the skill level. Mages can find work either within the government as sponsored mages or in private shops selling enchantments and other tools. If any of the above, the community job board is a good spot to look for available work.

The Horizon Court

The Horizon Court consists of the highest echelons of high elven society: those who stand above the rest in their respective skill. The elite within the courts work together to improve upon the society within Talar’nor. Their primary objective is to upkeep social standards of the principality- certifying that each member of not only the court, but each part of society strives for excellence in their work. Knowledge, poise, and amelioration of society are at the core of the values for the court.

The governing council of the Horizon Court is known as the Circle of Stars. Those among the circle of stars not only work within their own domain to advance society, but also ensure that others among the Courts uphold Talar’nor’s social values. The Circle of Stars work towards maintaining the palace, the culture, and the society of the Horizon Court.

Due to the core values of the Horizon Court, etiquette is a primary aspect of courtier proceedings. Use of titles and addressments are expected not only within the palace, but in daily life as well. It is essential to follow court customs, including wearing one’s finest clothing to court meetings, and donning the proper accessories to show one’s rank. Those who are nobility are permitted to wear bronze circlets, whereas family heads frequently wear signet rings with their family crests upon them. It is highly frowned upon for those of non-nobility status to wear circlets of any kind, especially within a court setting. Etiquette is an essential part of maintaining social standards within Talar’nor in its entirety.

Courtship

The process of courtship typically begins from twenty-fine years and up, once one has come of an appropriate age. During courtship, the couple becomes accustomed to one another and decides if there will be an engagement, concluding with the celebration of marriage. A mal or lari may ask to initiate a courtship with one another, it is of utmost importance that a relationship is built consensually. If a member of a courting pair is of a noble standing, the permission of the head of that household much be clearly given. Furthermore, while the nation accepts minor acts of public affection, such as an embrace, we expect our citizens to behave with appropriateness in mind, therefore, any public fraternization is frowned upon, especially outside of marriage. Talar'nor greatly values the nature of the matrimonial union between a pair and such acts should be kept private between husband and wife. Typical courtship practices may include giving flowers to your partner, a private stroll, or preparing a romantic dinner or picnic.

Appearances

The appearance of the Talar’nor elf is a rather strict, ancient look as common of all High-Elves due to a long history of selective marriages throughout its history of being under the umbrella of past nations. Thus, the appearance of the Talar’nor elf is a rather strong identity of appearance. A typical Talar’norian elf, often appears with a lighter tone of skin, varying from a light pale, to a marblesque pearl color of skin. Hair on the other hand, is far less demanding, with varying lighter shades present, with blonde, white, and silver being the most common, and red, orange, gray and gold being other colors. Black or brown hair is often the sign of a non-full blooded Talar’nor elf. Eyes follow suit, with colors benign far more variable with blue, violet, purple, green, gold and yellow being common colors, with brown being deeply frowned upon as a valah eye color. Height, albeit varied between 5’0 to 6’6, often ranges between the extremes rather than between, with most being over 6’0, and weighing generally between 100ibs to 260ibs, often being on the lighter end. Perfect skincare is promoted as necessary to greet the day, with personal grooming made of the utmost importance. Talar’norian elves are to be clean-shaven, their hair well-trimmed, skin clear and well bathed to be seen as appropriate in the public eye, anything less than their best is seen as a poor reflection on themselves.

Modesty

Amongst the city of stars and its’ upper echelons of society, how one displays themselves is often considered quite important. The elves of Talar’nor have an expectation of decorum for those that call the principality home. Modesty is something that is valued, but not in the traditional sense that one must always have every ounce of flesh covered. The exposing of a modicum of skin is considered quite acceptable. For example, shoulders and arms being exposed are considered acceptable in moderation. Denizens of the capital have an understanding that there are differences in culture. Should one be visiting from another nation that has a different expectation of attire than that of the city, then they are to be accepted by the majority and not looked down upon. There are still some who maintain the idea that one’s skin should not be overtly exposed no matter the situation.

Casual Wear

When wearing any attire in Talar’nor, it is common that they wear the best that they can afford. This comes to a split between those that chose fashion versus what is useful for them. When one visits Fi’andria, it is common to see plenty of individuals with long flowing robes that have many layers and attract the eye with their vibrant color. Even in the most casual of robes, they still have unique elements that set them apart from everyone else and to encourage individuality. Within Talar’nor, there is a firm belief amongst many of the denizens that one’s outward expression is representative of themselves, hence with the casual attire being more free-form than that of formal attire. Long flowing robes are quite common to be seen with various neutral tones complemented by a monochrome color. Pants are quite common amongst both men and women and often accompanied by long flowing capes or sashes that adorn one’s blouse. Jewelry is common amongst most of the society members as a way to keep inconspicuous enchantments on one’s person.

Formal Wear

To many individuals in Talar’nor, formal attire is very strict when it comes to it being dictated on events as is a maintenance of the dress code provided during those times. It is seen as disrespectful to wear anything less than your best when a formal dress code is indicated as one wearing such is a sign of mutual respect towards the event planners who put time into the event and expect time to be put into how one presents themselves. Formal attire consists of clean robes, pants, or gowns, quality clothing, and care for design. The formal attire worn is often that one’s best dressing attire, where the personification of themselves in their everyday wear is amplified to acute perfection made in every detail. Finely woven capes with intricate features, pants made of fine silks that layer under a sash or belt and puff out in the perfect spots, and jewelry that has been custom-designed to go with every detail of the outfit; that is what makes formal attire stand out from everyday wear. Formal wear is where fashion truly takes on as an art form where self-expression and creativity are encouraged to be progressed. In Talar’nor, when perfection is strived for it is met and fashion is no exception.

Marriage

The marriage vows are typically spoken before the Princess, members of the council one's talonii and lliran. Vows between an engaged pair are the most significant part of such a ceremony as they declare unity and commitment to one another, a symbol of unending love. Therefore, no intimacy occurs during the ceremonial union, to allow the pair to truly focus upon solidifying their bond.

Religion

The people of Talar'nor do not have a set religion - many do not worship a deity at all, but worshippers of Wyvrun, the Aspect and even the Canonist God aren't rare nor unwelcome as long as they do no impose their faith upon others.

Politics

Government

The government of Talar'nor is overseen by the Princess and Laurir'Heial alongside various advisors hand picked by the Princess. There are are two branches that form the main government. There is the higher council known as Laureh’heial, which is overseen specifically by the prince/princess of Takar’nor. Only those of high elven blood may ever hold a position on Laurir’heial, lest one rises through heavy meritocracy or through times of war. The advisors to the Princess serve to ensure that the will of the Princess and nation is maintained by the council during their decisions.

Succession

The Principality of Talar'nor adheres to appointment by current ruler in matters of succession to the Princely throne. Typically, this means the oldest son or daughter inherits the crown, yet the ruler may appoint any other High Elf they deem worthy as sucessor. The current ruling dynasty is the Wynasul Talonnii.

Aristocracy

The nobility of Talar'nor is for the most dedicated of productive members of society. The path of nobility is a versatile one, it is through dedicated service to the Principality of Talar'nor. The paths can be one or multiple, through working in the government as stewards, assisting with the quartermasters, in politics, contributing to magical advancements within the city, and running a thriving guild that provides to Fi’andria. Yet, these are not the only ways that one might attain a high standing in society. It is through stellar progress that the people thrive in tandem with the Principality. Once an individual or family has proven themselves and their loyalty to the Principality, it will be announced during court and an oathing ceremony will occur with either the individual's accomplishments brought to light in front of Talar society or the entire family swearing their fealty.
