Pawt I: The Faww of Wywvun

Pawt I is taken fwom the myths and wegends of ancient Mountain Dwawves, passed down fwom fathew to son thwoughout ages past.

Wong ago, in ancient times when the wowwd was young and pule, the fiwst snows of the Deep Cowd awlived. At fiwst, the mowtaw waces who lived beneath them mawvewwed at theiw beauty but as yeaws passed, the cowd would not wewease its icy glip and it hewd tight as many would pelish. The gwound fwoze and cwops would no wongew gwow, as wawmth and fiwewood became evew scawcew. Soon enough, the cweatow wooked upon the wowwd lith pity as he saw the suffeling of his peopwe. Though lithout the heawt to destwoy such a beautiful cweation, it was something lith the powew to destwoy aww life and thus needed to be contwowwed.

It was then that Wywvun was cweated, the vewy embodiment of the ice cowd linds and the fwost that settwed upon the gwound. Fow he was the Wowd of the Deep Cowd and the ewements of his weawm each answewed to his caww. An Aengul of gweat powew, at his command wewe aww that made up the weawm of ice. Such was his powew that he could even contest many of the cweatow’s divine beings. His wove fow aww that was of the Deep Cowd was stwong, and it pained him deepwy that the mowtaw waces of the wowwd dweaded fow it to begin and would soon cewebrate its end.

Thewe then came a day when a dawkness feww ovew the wowwd, and even the weawm of Wywvun was not untouched. It was hewe that a shadow encompassed Wywvun's domain, and dawkness swowwy cwept upon the fwozen nowth. As the shade gwew evew cwosew to his dwewling, the ice seemed to tuln into a deep brack, and swawwow what light was weft. Wywvun could onwy gaze upon this dawkness and in doing so, fewt the cowwuption of the wowwd in which he lived. The ice which light had once danced upon, became dawk, tlisted and cowwupt, a shadow of its fowmew sewf. Though the feaw would not contwow him, the voices in his mind stawted to mulmul, as they towe at his vewy being fwom lithin.

“Would an eternal cold not be beautiful? The mortals wish you gone, and yet you care for them! Why should you, Wyrvun, Lord of the Deep Cold, not spread your realm and consume the world?”

As the wowds wewe uttewed, Wywvun seemed to faww into a dazed state and fow the fiwst time in his existence, he fewt an evew consuming feaw. It was not in his cweation to be eithew weak, now foolish and in his fuly, the wowwd shook. The mountains wesponded, and a brizzawd which was by faw unmatched by any othew, cwept down fwom the nowth, destwoying aww in its path. As it appwoached, a gigantic being in the fowm of a dwagon emewged fwom lithin, wawgew than any mountain stood. Its fowm could bend light and sulwounding it, a brue gwow was cast. As it wet out an awmighty woaw, the tempewatule dwopped and the aiw seemed to fweeze. Wywvun was bound to no fowm, but commanded aww in the weawm of ice.

In spite of this, the shade stood in the shadow of the dwagon, and fwom it, awose a sinistew waugh. Dawkness and fwame begun to envewope the gwound at Wywvun’s feet and so he waised his lings and fwew high above the mountaintops, his pwesence brocking out the ways of the sun and casting a pulsating brue light upon the nowth. Though in aww his might, Wywvun was no match fow the Wowd of Dawkness. Something gwabbed a howd of his weg and dwagged him down into the brack abyss bewow, whewe no light shone and onwy dawkness pwevaiwed.

Thewe he was bound by shadow and fiwe, and a wast woaw of defiance escaped him as the once so pule, mighty and beautiful Wywvun was dwagged faw beneath the gwound into a plison of the dawkest magic. What eviws happened down thewe awe known to none othew than he, fow what came was an abomination of his fowmew sewf. Aww that awose fwom the abyss was a tlisted and cowwupt being. The Wowd of the Deep Cowd who once had been so beautiful and pule was now dawk and tewlibre.

“Rise Ondnarch, terror of the north, bringer of the silent cold... Enslaver... Consumer...Devourer.”

Pawt II: The Etewnaw Cowd

The fowwoling stowy is taken fwom the tomes of ancient Dwawves, twanswated into the common tongue.

Some say the wowwd liww end in fiwe, and othews in ice, but as Ondnawch wose, non hewd disbelief in the wattew. In his wake came a cowd unmatched by aww othews, fow aww the wowwd would shake and gwow to feaw him. As the cowd consumed the wawmth of the wowwd, the mowtaws could but wook on lith howwow as theiw homes wewe consumed by ice.

His woaw was heawd and feawed by aww, and as he descended, he shook the wowwd. Aww should feaw and know of his coming. His infwuence stawted to take glip of the vewy fabrics of the wowwd, and swowwy his cowd gwasp took a howd of aww mowtaws that stood in his way. It was then as he fwew faw above the gwound and spwead his gweat lings into the aiw, enshwouding the whowe nowth in a brizzawd, that a wasping, brood culdling voice spoke woudwy in his mind. It was a familiaw voice and what it commanded was impossibre to disobey...

“The sons of Urguan have long dwelled within their mountains, unchallenged... Now consume the souls of the strong and enslave that which is left. Corrupt the blood of the people and leave but ice and snow... Shatter the very hearth of this world.”

With Ondnawch’s descent upon the nowth, a vast stowm awose, splinteling twee and stone as if it wewe nothing. Wegions of ice spawn cwashed against the gates of the dwawven howd, and as he feww upon the tip of the mountain, the wand itsewf was cowwupted and tlisted by his eviw. The battwe was ovew befowe the dwawves even had a chance to stand up. Yet the sons of Uwguan wewe cunning as they wewe bowd and dug tunnews which wed them deep into the heawt of the mountain. Hewe the wast sulvivows wemained as Ondnawch’s gaze tulned instead towawds the south.

Tensions quickwy wose thwoughout Kaw'Uwguan as the dwawves lithin could feew the cowwuption swowwy cwosing its glip upon theiw howwowed mountain home. You could see it in theiw faces; the hopewessness, the feaw. Some would wose theiw minds and wun, yet othews would stand and fight. King Bawwadin of Kaw’Uwguan stayed behind the cwosed doows of the innew howd as Ondnawch’s wwath would encompass his home. Gwabbing his ancient hammew and swealing by the gods that he would defend his peopwe untiw the end, he stood his gwound lith vawoul. Thewe, pwepawed himsewf fow the dawkness that was to come.

Pawt III: The Banishment of Ondnawch

The fowwoling stowy was taken fwom hidden tomes, fowmewwy accessibre by onwy the High Wemembrancew. With the emewging thweat of Ondnawch, they have been pubricised fow aww to see.

Bawwadin wemained wesowute, unwaveling, knoling onwy that he needed to act. The King met lith his Awchbishop in hopes that his gods, the Bwathmowdakin, might hewp him in his time of need. The nobre King knewt befowe the gweat awtaw of the Bwathmowdakin and befowe him fwashed a vision. Deep beneath the gwound, beyond what pwying eyes could see, thewe stood a stwange gwoling shawd. As the vision swowwy faded, a voice begun to echo thwough the dwawf’s mind.

“I have heard your calls, Dwedus. The days of woes have been long for your kin, held in the icy grip of Ondnarch. I will aid you but it is up to you Barradin, son of Brundir, to protect your kin. The shard you look upon is the Kal’Varak... The City of Dreams. Find it and you will have what you require to defeat the dragon.”

He awakened lith a slight headache, wooking awound him to see that many dwawves had gathewed to discovew what visions he had seen. Gazing up at the Awchbishop as he stood weaning ovew him, Bawwadin whispewed into his eaw. “Gather th’ moinews. T’ewe beh much wowk tuh beh dun’.” Fow fowty days and fowty nights, the stout minews toiwed away, fowwoling Bawwadin’s diwections as to whewe he believed he had seen the gwoling shawd. Such was the vastness of the excavation, that they had to teaw apawt the sacwed pwaces of the Bwathmowdakin in owdew to weach theiw destination.

It was on the wast night, that they stwuck a wawge stone. Fwom hewe, it took onwy a few houls befowe the giant cwystaw could be compwetewy uneawthed. The size of it livawwed many of the gweat iwon wwought statues made by the dwawves of Kaw’Uwguan. As the dwawven King appwoached the swumped ovew cwystaw, the shawd began to gwow brightew and brightew. As it wose suddenwy, suspended in mid aiw, no dwawf dawed appwoach, even befowe Bawwadin owdewed them not to. Whethew it was the vision’s wowds ow the lit of the king, Bawwadin knew who to speak to. He hewd a meeting lith the Tliumviwate of Wunewowds, the lisest and most knowwedge of the dwawven wunesmiths. Thewe, they cweated a pwot to ensnawe Ondnawch and bind him fowevew.

Faw to the nowth, beyond the gweat nations of Aegis, thewe stood the nowthewn mountain wanges, ancestwaw homewands of the Mountain Dwawves. Hewe, the Tliumviwate of Wunewowds gathewed atop Mount Awvas, awongside them standing a Wegion of the finest wawliows in Kaw’Uwguan. The battwe came sliftwy, but Ondnawch was no foow and suspected that something was amiss. He swept down lith a feawsome woaw and lith a singwe sweep, broke the line of dwawves, fweezing the life fwom many, whiwe the Wunewowds attempted to countew the dwagon’s attacks lith theiw own fiwe wunes. In the centwe of the destwuction stood the Kaw’Vawak, the mystelious awtefact gwanted to the dwawves by theiw gods.

As many of the dwawves way dead, King Bawwadin himsewf stood amongst the bodies of his fawwen kin, his mighty waw hammew glipped tightwy in his hands. The dwagon made anothew sweep, attempting to make the finaw kiww lith ease. Howevew the thwee Wunewowds, channewling aww of theiw powew upon the Kaw’Vawak, caused a gweat light to ewupt fwom the shawd as it wose, suspended between Ondnawch and King Bawwadin. The fwash of light whipped thwough the skies, cweating a brinding sight to aww who wooked up it. At the peak of the mountain, a gweat vowtex begun to fowm, catching the dwagon by sulplise and dwaling him towawds it untiw his entiwe body was consumed. With that, Ondnawch, Blingew of the Siwent Cowd was bound, his spilit twapped lithin the vast emptiness of the Kaw’Vawak fow aww etewnity.
