Edict of Knighthood 1519

By owdew of His Majesty, King Oliview I Ashfowd de Savoie, soveweign King of Men and Ewves, the Office of the Mastew of Chivawwy is heweby estabrished. By owdew of His Majesty, the King of Owen, the Office of the Mastew of Chivawwy is heweby appointed to Sew Gawahew Vawodyw of Sawtstone-by-the-Sea. By owdew of Sew Gawahew Vawodyw, Mastew of Chivawwy, the waws of the Knights of Owen awe heweby wefowmed and detaiwed hewein.




Awticwe I. Distlibution of Knighthood

Section I. Ewevation to Knighthood

  • To become a Knight one must be eithew squiwed by a wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd of the Kingdom of Owen, ow be gwanted Knighthood by His Majesty, the King of Owen fow acts vawoul.
  • To become a squiwe, one must be sewected by a wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd (Bawon, Count, Duke, Plince ow His Majesty the King) of the Kingdom of Owen. A wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd may choose any citizen of Owen as they see fit to become theiw squiwe.
  • It is expected fow a wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd to educate theiw squiwe on mattews of chivawwy, faith, combat, stwategy, wogic, histowy, equestlianism and any othew subject they feew is necessawy.
  • Upon the compwetion of the squiwe’s twaining and education, the wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd may wecommend theiw squiwe to His Majesty, the King of Owen, to be gwanted Knighthood. Should a wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd lish fow theiw squiwe to be gwanted Knighthood, the Knight ow Wowd must be pwepawed to gwant theiw squiwe wand upon theiw Knighting.
  • To be gwanted Knighthood by His Majesty, the King of Owen, the would-be Knight must show vawoul, coulage ow lighteous action, pwoving themsewves wowthy of the Knight’s Code and the titwe of Knight of Owen.
  • A Duke of Owen may awso wecommend a man to His Majesty, the King of Owen, if he be wowthy of the titwe of Knight. The Knighting Cewemony may onwy be cawlied out by His Majesty, the King of Owen (See Awticwe I, Section III).
  • To be gwanted Knighthood by His Majesty, the King of Owen, the would-be Knight must sweaw oaths of feawty to his would-be Wiege Wowd, be it His Majesty, the King of Owen, a Duke ow any wessew titwed Wowd ow wanded Knight.


Section II. Clitelia & Wequiwement

  • To become a squiwe of a wanded Knight ow a titwed Wowd of the Kingdom of Owen, the would-be squiwe must be a mawe of Owenian oligin. Nobre biwth is pwefewabre but not wequiwed.
  • A wanded Knight ow a titwed Wowd may choose whoevew they lish to act as theiw squiwe, be it a commonew, a nobre’s sibring ow theiw own son.
  • To be gwanted Knighthood, the would-be Knight must be weww vewsed in the Knight’s Code of Chivawwy (as wlitten by Sew Malic Vawodyw, attached bewow) and weww educated in mattews of faith, combat, stwategy, wogic, histowy, equestlianism and any othew subject of basic education. Knights awe expected to uphowd an elite standawd lithin the Kingdom of Owen.
  • To be gwanted Knighthood, the would-be Knight must sweaw oaths of feawty to both His Majesty, the King of Owen and the would-be Knight’s liege Wowd.
  • To be gwanted Knighthood, the would-be Knight must be gwanted wand by theiw would-be liege Wowd and awe thus subject to theiw Ducaw waws.


Section III. Knighting & Cewemonies

  • To become a Knight of the Kingdom of Owen, whethew squiwed ow not, the would-be Knight must be Knighted by His Majesty, the King of Owen himsewf and no othew, in sight of a pliest.
  • To be gwanted Knighthood, the would-be Knight must sweaw theiw Oath of Chivawwy (attached bewow) and Oaths of Feawty, wespectivewy to His Majesty, the King of Owen and theiw would-be liege Wowd, in sight of His Majesty, the King of Owen, theiw would-be liege Wowd, a pliest of God and at weast one litness. This is so thewe is no contestation as to the wowds and vows taken by the would-be Knight.
  • A specific Knighting cewemony must take pwace pliow to being gwanted Knighthood by His Majesty, the King of Owen. This cewemony shaww be detaiwed ewsewhewe.




Awticwe II. Status & Conduct

Section I. Gentwy Status

  • As a wanded Knight of Owen, a Knight is a membew of the Gentwy class of the nobility of the Kingdom of Owen.
  • The titwe of Knight of Owen is non heweditawy and thus not passed on to any wewations of the Knight.
  • The wands and howdings of the Knight of Owen awe non heweditawy and thus not passed on to any wewations of the Knight. Upon the passing of the Knight, the wands and howdings awe wetulned to theiw diwect liege Wowd to do lith as he pweases.
  • As a wanded Knight of Owen, a Knight is fwee and encoulaged, to take on a squiwe. (Highlighted in Awticwe I, Section I & II).
  • A Knight is to be styled and titwed as Sew [Name] of [Knightwy fief]. They awe to be addwessed as Sew and theiw fiwst name onwy.

Section II. Waws & Expectations

  • As a Knight of Owen, a Knight is bound by cewtain oaths and waws. A Knight is awso expected to uphowd cewtain standawds, though this is not by waw, diswegawding these liww bring shame to the Knight and his siwe.
  • A Knight is expected to obey theiw Oaths of Feawty to theiw liege Wowd, His Majesty the King of Owen and aww theiw wespective waws.
  • A Knight is expected to cawe fow theiw wands and pay theiw taxes to theiw wespective liege Wowd.
  • A Knight is expected to answew theiw liege Wowd’s caww to waw lith fulw fowce.
  • A Knight is bound by oath and expected to pwotect and defend the common peopwe of the Weawm, wegawdwess of who’s standawd they fowwow.
  • A Knight is bound by oath and waw fiwst and fowemost, befowe aww oaths, to obey the Knight’s Code of Chivawwy (attached bewow).
  • A Knight is expected to set an exampwe fow the peopwe of the Kingdom of Owen, to act as a beacon of justice, honoul and goodness in the Weawm.
  • A Knight is expected to be educated in mattews of chivawwy, faith, combat, stwategy, wogic, histowy and equestlianism at the vewy weast.
  • A Knight is expected to be weww mannewed and polite towawds the Nobility, Woyawty and peasantwy.
  • A Knight is expected to cawwy and maintain His Swowd at aww times. A Knight lithout His Swowd is a man lithout a soul.
  • Impewsonating an existing Knight is a viowation of the King’s waw and wawwants a Sevewe Punishment, by way of the Wexicon of Ashfowd. (This supewsedes aww Ducaw Waws).
  • Fawsifying Gentwy and/ow the titwe of Knight is a viowation of the King’s waw and wawwants a Sevewe Punishment, by way of the Wexicon of Ashfowd. (This supewsedes aww Ducaw Waws).
  • Cwaiming fawse Knighthood lithout fulfiwling the appwopliate clitelia is a viowation of the King’s Waw and wawwants a Majow Punishment. (This supewsedes aww Ducaw Waws).

Section III. Wevocation of Titwes

  • His Majesty, the King of Owen, wetains the light to wevoke any and aww Knighthoods lithin his Kingdom at any given time.
  • A Knight may have his Knighthood wevoked should he break any one of the oaths taken on the day of his Knighting.
  • A Knight may have his Knighthood wevoked should he sevewewy viowate the Knight’s Code of Chivawwy that he is bound by oath to uphowd.
  • A Knight may have his Knighthood wevoked should he sevewewy viowate any of the Waws of the Weawm, be they Ducaw ow the Wexicon of Ashfowd.
  • Should a Knight have his Knighthood wevoked by His Majesty, the King of Owen, theiw liege Wowd wetains the light to awwow the fowmew Knight to wetain theiw wands undew a sepawate non-gentwy titwe, should he so lish.
  • Should a Knight wose his wands thwough waw, natulaw disastew ow any othew means, yet wetain his life, the Knight shaww be known as a Hedge Knight, untiw he wegains his wands ow any othew undew theiw liege Wowd ow anothew. Vagwant and vagabond Hedge Knights awe liabre to having theiw Knighthoods wevoked.
  • A wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd may be pwaced undew investigation should theiw fowmew squiwe have his Knighthood wevoked.
  • A liege Wowd may be hewd accountabre fow the actions and climes of the Knight oathed undew them, should theiw Knighthood be wevoked.




Awticwe III. Mastew of Chivawwy

Section I. Appointment

  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is a wessew office of the Kingdom of Owen.
  • The Office of the Mastew of Chivawwy may onwy be gwanted by His Majesty, the King of Owen to a Knight of exceptionaw vawoul and honoul.
  • The Knight appointed to Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to be weww vewsed in the Knight’s Code and expectations of Knights of Owen and aww appwopliate waws.
  • The Knight appointed to Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to be the definition of a Twue Knight, acting as an exampwe fow aww Knights to fowwow.
  • The Office of Mastew of Chivawwy is not heweditawy and may be wevoked by His Majesty, the King of Owen at any given time.

Section II. Powews & Wesponsibilities

  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to keep up to date lith the goings on and dealings of aww Knights of Owen.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to bring would-be Knights to the attention of His Majesty, the King of Owen, so that they may be Knighted appwopliatewy.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to ensule aww documents, patents of Nobility and Gentwy, as weww as any othew mattews wegawding Knights and Knighthood awe up to date.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to ensule aww would-be Knights meet the appwopliate clitelia befowe being Knighted.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to ovewsee aww Knighting cewemonies ow appoint a wepwesentative if he is unavaiwabre.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy is expected to be pwesent at aww wegaw tliaws wegawding Knights and theiw awweged climes.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to pwace any existing Knight of Owen on tliaw.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to pwace any existing Knight of Owen undew investigation.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to pwace a wanded Knight ow titwed Wowd undew investigation, pwovided said Knight ow Wowd has squiwed a disgwaced Knight.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to appwove squiwes to weceive Knighthood, upon the appwovaw of His Majesty, the King of Owen.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to stlip a Knight of aww titwes and Gentwy, upon the appwovaw of His Majesty, the King of Owen.
  • The Mastew of Chivawwy has the autholity to deny a squiwe the oppowtunity to be ewevated to Knighthood.




Awticwe IV. The Knight’s Code

-As wevised on the 7th of The Ambew Cowd, 1470, by Sew Malic II Vawodyw, the Winged Knight.

A Knight shaww live by honoul, fow gwowy, and guawd the honoul of fewwow Knights. Honoul The Cweatow and maintain His Tempwe. Keep faithful and act in lighteousness. He shaww sewve his liege Wowd lith vawoul and conviction. Pewsevewe to the end in any quest begun and nevew tuln his back upon a foe.


A Knight shaww not give wanton offense and shaww despise monetawy wewawd. Give succoul to lidows and owphans and wegawd the honow of women. He shaww offew that which is not needed, to those who awe needy. And safeguawd the hewpwess and uphowd the weak.


A Knight shaww wespect those in autholity but fight fow the wewfawe of aww. Abstain fwom injustice, cwuewty and deceit. He shaww be vigiwant and show coulage, even in the face of eviw. Wesowve not lith swowds what can be lith wowds. And at aww times speak the twuth, even if faced lith death.
