When presented with a list of previous wars between the Empire and the Kingdom of Norland, Norlandic experts can identify only one other war in history referred to as a 'Nordling War', which was claimed to be the seventh. Further to that, there has only been one war since that one, in which Norland and and the Empire fought on opposite sides - not including the most recent, claimed to be the tenth. It can be identified that in recorded history preceding the Tenth Nordling War, there are only three wars declared between Norlandic nations and the Holy Orenian Empire. If this is expanded to include other realms, such as the Empire of Man and the Crown of Renatus-Marna, that brings the count up to five. It is by this count that Norlandic scholars discard Imperial usage of the term 'Tenth Nordling War', as by proper count it is at most the sixth.

Nordling War is a term used by the Holy Orenian Empire to refer to a broad range of conflicts involving the Kingdom of Norland or its antecedents. It is used almost exclusively in the Holy Orenian Empire. The term is disputed outside of its borders on two bases: 'Nordling' is generally considered to be a derogatory term for the Norlander ethnicity, and many of the conflicts did not involve the Holy Orenian Empire itself, but other human states which it claims as its predecessors. Additionally, Norlanders were not always the primary belligerents in these wars. The term came into common parlance during what the Empire calls the Tenth Nordling War, referred to as the War of Three Kingdoms by Norland and its allies.
