This page is about the Modern Kingdom of Oren. For Oren as a general concept, see Oren or for older editions of the kingdom, see Old Kingdom of Oren.

The Fifth Kingdom of Oren, or simply Oren was a large Human nation that occupies much of the former lands of the Holy Orenian Empire following its collapse during the Brothers' War. The most recent iteration of the Kingdom was founded in Almaris, after Frederick I dissolved the Holy Orenian Empire and defeated his older brother Emperor Peter IV in a war of succession that brought about the end of the Empire.

The Kingdom of Oren is an absolute hereditary monarchy, with the King having absolute power and his titles being passed down to his eldest Sons. The current King, Frederick I, ascended the Orenian throne after storming the Imperial capital of New Providence and declaring the dissolution of the Empire. After defeating his older brother in the Battle for New Providence, Frederick ordered the lands of the old Empire split into the Kingdom of Oren and the independent Grandmarch of Westfall, with House Novellen still remaining the royal house of Oren.

History

The Brothers' War

Main: Brothers' War

Following the infamous War of the Wigs, Philip III, Holy Orenian Emperor had suddenly passed away and his wife, Anastasia I had succumbed to a broken heart and passed in the following fortnight. With both its monarchs dead, a severe power vacuum was opened in the Holy Orenian Empire. Both Philip and Anastasia's firstborn son, Peter Augustus, and their thirdborn son Frederick Charles sought to fill that rift. In the days following Anastasia's death, Frederick Charles had amassed a sizeable host of his Mardonic Bannerman which he used to march on the Imperial Capital of Providence and claim the city.

Upon taking complete control of Providence, Frederick proclaimed the dissolution of the Holy Orenian Empire and declared himself King of Oren. Several Orenian vassal lords immediately bent the knee to the new King however, some were more hesitant than others such as Duke Ivan var Ruthern of Reutov who fled to his ancestral home of Blackriver Hall to begin the formation of a movement to install Peter Augustus onto the Orenian throne.

Ultimately this would lead to a four-month-long civil war known as the Brothers' War in which Frederick would come out victorious. He went on to be publically recognized as the King of Oren and his rule became unchallenged.

Ranks

  • Lord Commander
    • The Highest rank in the legion, the Lord Commander is appointed by the King and his Privy. They are tasked with leading the Legion, and hold the final say in Legion Politics. They are charged with overseeing the Petra region, and only answers to the King himself.
  • Captian
    • Captains are tasked with leading the various Cohorts in the Legion. Each Captain is assigned a Cohort, and holds two sergeants beneath them. Captains consist of some of the best leaders in the Legion, each given their own tasks and duties. Captains are responsible for the training and discipline within the legion and to ensure a standard is maintained.
  • Sergeant
    • Sergeants act as Non-commissioned Officers, each Cohort is assigned two Sergeants. These sergeants are tasked with assisting the Captain in managing their respective Cohorts. Their responsibilities include oathing in new initiates, hosting training, patrols, and leading small groups of legionnaires.
  • Men-at-Arms
    • Men-at-Arms are experienced Legion soldiers who have accrued veteran status and may command lower enlisted freely. Those with this rank are charged with conducting missions such as scouting, coordinating drills, as well as patrols.
  • Footmen
    • Footmen are the backbone of the Legion’s might. They are tried and tested soldiers who have passed their initial phase and proved their worth. It is from here that soldiers will work to improve themselves and aid in the betterment of the King and her assets. Footmen are expected to continuously strive to improve themselves and outperform other enlisted members; it is from here that a soldier may achieve upward mobility within the Legion, should a position present itself.
  • Initiate
    • The Initiate is the beginning rank of a soldier, having no authority in the military. An initiate should set out with the wish to prove their mettle in the King Legion. They are expected to know their place at all times, keeping in mind that only efficiency, obedience, and diligence will allow them to progress.

Traditions

  • The call to war
    • The call to war is a nigh-religious event in Orenian culture, though it is not one that has been practiced for some time. The day after war is declared, or after a declaration of war is received, a great feast is held among soldier and citizen alike, symbolizing the newfound unity of the two in times of war, for all Orenian must serve in such times, whether it is on the front lines or in material support back home. It is common for young men and women to enlist en masse: while this is supposedly out of their desire to prove themselves in battle and serve their people, there are reports of sergeants dragging unwillingly, able-bodied youth out of their homes and dragging them to the barracks.
  • The Punishment of Cowards
    • There are few greater crimes than that of cowardice, doubly so in times of battle. If a soldier is found to be hiding during a siege, fleeing the battlefield, or otherwise failing to risk their lives to bring victory to their people, then a severe, horrible punishment is rendered upon them. From dawn until dusk the cowardly soldier is bound to a stake in the middle of the town square, free to be struck, but not killed, by any who pass by. Once the sun slips below the horizon, the entire Legion gather before the coward as the Lord Commander offers them two choices: either be burned at the stake and receive a burial as a soldier, or have their throat slit and their body left to feed the crows. Those with even a shred of dignity left would do best to choose the former.
  • The Fate of Prisoners of War
    • Prisoners of war are highly valued among the Oren, regarded as trophies in the same vein as treasures, coins, and other spoils of conquest. Although all captives are surrendered to the count, each soldier is paid a small sum for every person they have captured. The prisoners of war are then selected for their utility- the strong and able-bodied are offered a place in the Legion, those with certain skills are allowed to practice their trade, and those younger than ten are given to a family to be raised in the ways of an Orenian. Those who try and reject these gracious offers at a second chance in life are summarily bound and tossed into a nearby river.
  • The Settling of Grievances
    • Given the competitive and belligerent nature of the Orenians, it is only natural that rivalries form between various soldiers. So long as these do not devolve into petty factionalism, which would require the direct intervention of the Lord Commander of his Captains, then officers are more than content to let individual soldiers settle their feuds. The only rules of settling grievances are that the soldiers must be of equal rank, or else a superior officer would dole out punishment and that no death or serious injury arises from it, so that good manpower is not wasted. Typically, this comes in the form of a duel to first blood, but wrestling matches, races, tests of bravery, and other competitions are beginning to grow in popularity among feuding soldiers.
  • The Week of Triumph
    • After a victorious campaign, a great celebration is held for the victorious Orenian soldiers. For seven days and seven nights, a series of feasts, parades, and games are held. Spoils taken from the campaign are shared around, and at the end of the week, no soldier has what he initially took. No hard labor is to be done during the week of Triumph, save for the cooks, who get their own short holiday the day after the week of Triumph. It is said that this celebration is one of the few where the strict morality of the Orenian people may be loosened.

Demographics

Humans make up the majority of the kingdom, namely Heartlanders and Highlanders.

Religion

The Kingdom of Oren follows Oywnism, a rite of the Canonist Church. DIfferentiating mostly in sacraments and slightly in ideology

The Lectorate of Owyn

The Lectorate of Owyn spawned not from the Canonist Church but instead the Greater Flame of Gaekrin, the father organization of Lectors who reside upon the continent of Aeldin. Due to the laws of the territory, it was forbidden that the Church of the True Faith refrains from establishing a standing army of men to limit the power of the faith militant. As such, the Lectorate’s structure was molded to act as an ecclesiastic monastic order rather than a collection of Holy Knights. Brothers Lectors are taught to prioritize theological endeavors and studies before the martial arts; in this sense, Lectors are intended to be a supportive organization rather than a spearhead. Within the Greater Flame, there exists an Arch-Lector Council whereby prominent members of the organization convene and debate issues pertinent to the Owynist Rite and the Lectorate as a whole. Within the Almaris Lectorate, also known as "The Flaming Covenant Cohort", all who have obtained the rank of “Lector” are provided a voice within the Lector council and are provided a singular vote. However, before one can obtain this most blessed of titles, one must first prove themselves worthy of the Lectorhood. In order to prove one's self they must pass a series of trials and tribulations.
