The Republic of Ves (Auvergne: République de Vès, Illatian: Repubblica di Vessia, Raevir: Vezoskaya Respublika, Elven: Ellaurehsae ay'Ves) was a state centered around the Golden City of Ves within the Heartlands of Arcas. It was the successor state of the Duchy of Adria and held dominion over Mont St. Catherine and the surrounding area. Ves itself was highly urbanized and compact while it’s countryside had noted natural beauty and was left undeveloped and rural.

Ves was an oligarchic republic with the basic precepts of its government defined by the Charter of the Golden City of Ves. Its legislative body was the Assembly which is composed of both the Patricians i.e the leaders of the most influential families and of assemblymen which are chosen by lottery every four years. The executive power of the Republic was vested within the Prince though that power is curtailed by both longstanding tradition and by the Charter itself.

Name

The official name of the state is the Serene Republic of Ves which is used in official documentation, treaties, and legal documents. The state is often also called the Golden City of Ves with its origins as an Imperial Free City though this designation is usually reserved for the city proper. The name Ves itself comes from Vesna, Countess of Susa who was the mother of Rupert, Count of Susa the predominant architect and urban planner of the city. This trend of cities named after mothers was popular in the beginning of the eighteenth century.

History

Rise of the Republic

The Duchy of Adria reformed in Atlas after a combined host of Sarkozic, Vladov, and Ivanovich bannermen conquered the Duchy of Blackmarsh and the City of Belvitz. In Atlas the City of Belvitz was granted its charter and was afforded the Gradic Rights, making it an independent polity within the Duchy of Adria. While the Duchy of Adria had several rural settlements and castles within its borders, the majority of the populace lived within the city proper. This gave the city considerable influence in Adrian politics and brought forth a “one-state two-governments” dynamic. The city dominated Adrian politics and countless measures were taken to stave off the city’s influence by the lesser nobility.

The Republic originated in 1711 after a contingent of Imperial and Haensetian soldiers sacked and torched the Golden City of Ves on the orders of their Emperor Antonius I. After learning that the city was burned with the assent of their liege lord, King Marius II of Hanseti-Ruska the surviving authorities from the city liberated Ves from its ties to the Duchy of Adria and founded the Republic. The surviving authorities, the foremost among them being the future Prince, Alfred Myre made peace with Emperor Antonius I nullifying previous documents drafted to partition the Duchy of Adria. Several years later, fearing another bout of Imperial aggression several dignitaries from the city attended the Council of Nenzing and joined the side of Joseph I in the War of Two Emperors. While a loss for Ves and the Holy Orenian Empire, dignitaries from the city once again achieved a favorable peace securing the Republic’s independence in 1719 with the Treaty of Ves.

The Commonwealth of Kaedrin (1726)

The current Commonwealth of Kaedrin has risen from the ashes of the old Republic of Ves, promoted by the House of Helvets who emigrated to the free city, bringing Kaedreni culture and philosophy with them all the while. Technically, the realm is in a state of legal personal union between Kaedrin and Ves, and while the latter does take a secondary role to the former on paper, a great many democratic processes are drawn from both systems in order to form the government of the new Commonwealth - an elective monarchy and quasi-military state unique in its role within the Holy Orenian Empire.

Nobility

The Nobility of Ves is styled instead as "Patrician Families," appointed solely by the Prince to those of high renown and numbers within the Republic of Ves. The head of an appointed house holds an official role as "Patrician" within the city, being then able to hold a regular voting seat within the Serene Assembly. Patrician families are not required to hold titles (though most do) nor land, usually devoting their service especially to the city of Ves, and their own growth and prosperity.

Culture and Society

Demographic

The Republic of Ves is consisted predominantly of Heartlander stock. Throughout history, the Duchy of Adria has had a Raevir ruling caste though over time the Highlander traditions were phased out for more refined ones. After the founding of the Republic, the Carrion ruling class was largely forced out of power and replaced with a ruling class of heartlander burghers. The Republic of Ves is arguably the most varied nation within Humanity proper. There is a sizable Farfolk population within the city which is dominated by the Clan of Rassid. Matthias Rutledge, a former Prince of Ves is also noted to be of Southernos descent, making him the first Southernos Prince of Ves. The city is host to a number of nonhumans with various clans and families of prominence such as the Arkaznivs, Drumms, and Songbirds.
