Sir Paul Dmitrievich Montalt, also known as Pavel Dmitrievich of House Ivanovich, was born on 14th of Horen's Triumph, 1859. He was appointed to be the squire of Sir Gustaf de Vilain by Frederick I, King of Oren in the aftermath of the Brothers' War. After the fall of the Kingdom of Oren, he was briefly a corsair in Yong Ping, before immigrating to the Commonwealth of the Petra with his companions Thomas Balamena and Emilio d’Anpalais. Upon being squired to Dame Catherine of Furnstock, he was knighted by Matilda Fredericka Novellen of the Old Regime at the behest of Duke Paul Temesch et Moere. His knightly epithets were dubbed "The Tongue" and "The Unspoken". As a young man, Sir Paul fought in the Sinners War, the Brothers War, and the Acre Rebellion. In the latter part of his life, he fought in the Petran Civil War, in which he was the de facto leader of the Petran Loyalist Movement that sought to maintain the rule of Archduchess Renilde of the Petra. Forsaking his oath to the Archduchess after the war after the Archduchess stripped his lands in Guise and its surrounding territories to gift it to the King of Aaun, Charles I, Sir Paul Montalt would go on to join the Ferrymen and become an outlaw, known for his piracy along the coasts of the borders of what was once the Holy Orenian Empire.

History

Sir Paul Montalt was born 12 years before the end of the Sinners War in New Providence as Pavel Dimitrievich Barrow, the bastard son of Sir Dima Cato Ivanovich. Upon turning 12-years-old, he was conscripted into the Revolutionary Army and alongside his nephew Sir Andrezj Barrow fought in the Brothers War for King Frederick I of Mardon against his older brother Emperor Peter Augustus Novellen. As Sir Andrezj slew the Emperor in Aster Hall at the conclusion of the war, so too did Pavel take a life for the first time when he shot Floryan Carrion in the skull during the formal execution of the Imperials who lost the civil war. After the war, King Frederick recognized the boy’s talents and noted his familial relations to his strongest and most loyal knight Andrezj. As a consequence, King Frederick formally entrusted Pavel’s education as a squire to the knight Sir Gustaf de Vilain, and the bastard was formally legitimized by the new king as a reward for his service. Henceforth, he was recognized as Squire Pavel Dimitrievich of House Ivanovich.

In Sir Gustaf, Squire Pavel found a reliable mentor, and the two grew close while sparring with practice swords and traveling the world to practice their gallantry. Sir Gustaf taught Pavel how to ride a horse, how to fight in a mele and joust, as well as how to navigate the world of politics. However, there came to be a time where Pavel recognized that he was unsure if being a knight was for him. So, Pavel set out on his own and took to the roads in an attempt to find his calling, feeling guilt for the lives he had a hand in taking during the Brothers War. At the age of sixteen, he received a series of mutations from the Lectorate, and his opponents in battle noted that his skin on his temple and hands could grow thick as iron, and that he was able to recover quicker from his injuries after battle. Furthermore, it was noted that he was capable on occasion of being able to deflect an arrow or side-step a shot on a good day, mystifying other combatants and giving him an unfair advantage in combat.

After leaving Acre, Pavel traveled the kingdoms of Oren and Haense with free reign, doing his best to learn about the world. Eventually, he was called back into service by King Frederick’s daughter Maude Fredericka Novellen, and made the Captain of the Kingsguard upon Acre’s declaration of secession following the Almaris Coalition War, which had seen Oren’s position on the world stage diminished, and its vassals on the cusp of civil war. As the civil war kicked off, Sir Gustaf and the Squire Pavel found themselves on opposing sides, with Sir Gustaf spearheading the rebellion that sought to depose the Novellen Royal Family’s power and abolish the Kingdom of Oren.

Pavel, however, made good on his oath he had made to King Frederick in his youth. Though he had no taste for war, he served loyally in multiple skirmishes, before during the King Frederick’s last speech was interrupted by an army of Acrean revolutionaries and mercenaries that combed through the open gates, slaughtering the far outnumbered Royal Loyalists with impunity. Captain Pavel attempted to confront Sir Gustaf and challenge him to a duel, but this challenge was rejected. It is believed there are multiple possible reasons for this. As Sir Gustaf was thought to have taken a liking and regarded Pavel like a little brother, it is possible the knight did not wish to be responsible for the death of his own former squire. The other possible reason that has some credibility is that as Pavel was not a knight, Sir Gustaf was under no formal oath to accept a duel from a lesser peer. Nonetheless, Captain Pavel engaged in a mele with the Prince of Renatus Hadrian van Aert. The battle was fierce, albeit quick, and Captain Pavel was unhorsed and then the two fought on foot. Although Pavel landed a grazing injury that inconvenienced the Prince of Renatus, Hadrian wounded the young Raevir warrior by running him through with a pike and left him for dead. A burned body after the battle would be mistakenly buried in commemoration of the young Ivanovich; but in reality, he was still alive - retarded from a wound to the head, and diseased from a bout of illness he got while hardly clinging to life in a pile of bodies. Saviley Ivanovich, his cousin, rescues him and then brings him to an island in exile near Yong Ping. Erstwhile, Saviley had taken Maude Novellen under his charge, rescuing her from capture at the hands of the von Dracos who fought for Sir Gustaf during the war.
