The Nyrheim Northern War, also known as the Northern Invasion or the Skanarri War to the Norlanders and the Grand Northern War to the Skanarri, is an ongoing conflict between the forces of the Kingdom of Norland, the United Skanarri Tribes, and the Svarling Horde. The outbreak of the war was caused by Skanarri raiders entering the lands of Norland and beginning to attack Norlandic settlements, eventually occupying the town of Nueva Tierra. This led to an informal declaration of war by the Skanarri, who have continued to wage war against the Northern kingdom. The Svarlings joined the war mid 35 SA, attacking both Skanarri and Norlandic forces and thus becoming a third party.

Timeline

  • 28th year of the Second Age:
    • The Skanarri tribes unite under High Chieftain Argos, who begins plans for more incursions into the Kingdom of Norland.
    • A sudden increase in raids from the Skanarri begin to occur following the Norlandic defeat in the War of the Three Kingdoms, as well as sightings of groups of tribesmen nearby Nueva Tierra.
  • 29th year of the Second Age:
    • A raiding party led by Sigrid 'The Bloody' attacks Clan O'hara's keep known as Ironguard, the engagement spiralling into the Battle of Ironguard As a result, the Skanarri priestess known as 'The Blind Priestess' is captured by Norland.
    • Not long after the battle of Ironguard, a scouting party of 300 bannermen from Clan Kvitravn engage a force of roughly 1,000 Skanarri, the conflict becoming known as the Battle of Nueva Tierra. In the fighting, Hali and Emerald Kvitravn are captured.
    • A prisoner exchange between the Duchy of Elysium and Callum 'The Rude' spirals out of control, leading to the Battle of Elysium. The Skanarri are able to rescue 'The Blind Priestess' and the Norlanders are able to rescue Hali and Emerald Kvitravn.
    • Sigrid 'The Bloody' manages to successfully ambush a small force of 40 Elysian rangers near Ironguard, causing them to retreat back to Elysium. A relief force of Norlandic reinforcements is sent, beginning the Skirmish of the Raenr Mountains. Hali Kvitravn is killed in the fighting and Vane Freysson is taken captive.
    • Unaware that 'The Blind Priestess' had already been recovered, Sigrid 'The Bloody' attempts to bargain for her using Vane as a hostage. Vane manages to escape behind Elysium's walls and Sigrid 'The Bloody' is shot and killed by a Ballista bolt.
  • 30th year of the Second Age:
    • Grejon, an old friend of High Chieftain Argos, is ordered to take a warband of warriors and assault the Lunner keep between Varhelm and Elysium. This spirals into a bloody battle known as the Siege of the Lunner Keep. The siege is decisively won by Norland after King Sven II rallied the soldiers of Yong Ping and rode to relieve the besieged castle, hitting the Skanarri warband from the side. The involvement of Yong Ping during this battle has caused their unofficial entry in the war on the side of Norland.
  • 31st year of the Second Age:
    • A message simply called 'A Message to the King's Council' is sent to the ruling King's Council of Norland by High Chieftain Argos calling for peace between the two peoples. [1]
    • No significant skirmishes occur throughout the rest of the year
  • 32nd year of the Second Age:
    • Skanarri sightings seem to decrease throughout the year, with no warbands being sighted outside of the Skanarri-occupied regions.
    • King Sven II dies during a delve into the Varhelm catacombs, as a result the Kingdom falls under the regency of Vane Freysson.
    • No major skirmishes occur
  • 33rd year of the Second Age:
    • After a tense meeting between High Chieftain Argos Shieldbreaker and King-Regent Vane Freysson, the Skanarri and the Kingdom of Norland come to a temporary cease-fire until terms of peace can be properly asserted.
  • 34th year of the Second Age:
    • During peace talks between the newly elected King Vane and High Chieftain Argos, the meeting is ambushed by Skanarri opposed to Argos' rule. Argos is shot by an arrow and killed in what becomes known as the Battle of the Lumberyard. Despite the Norlanders driving off the attacking Skanarri, the Skanarri ultimately got what they wanted by assassinating Argos and successfully taking Aylin de Astrea, heir to Elysium, captive.
    • Due to resuming of fighting, the Cease fire ends.
    • During the Battle of the Lumberyard, mysterious figures who called themselves Svarlings observe the battle
  • 35th year of the Second Age:
    • The Svarlings attack the Skanarri and a small scale skirmish ensues, with the Svarlings later declaring their intentions of crushing both the Skanarri and Norlanders. This causes their official entry as a third party in the war.
    • Aylin de Astrea is rescued by the Rangers of Elysium, safely bringing her back to the Duchy of Elysium.
    • Chieftain Grejon the Warrior moves his entire force to make camp outside of Varhelm whilst leaving a small garrison at Nueva Tierra, then sending a message to King Vane and the Norlandic people [2]
    • The Skanarri establish Camp Fnod, a small farming settlement which doubles as a lookout for the greater Skanarri force.
    • The Skanarri and Norland engage in a small scale skirmish with each other, only to later be attacked by an eartheater and then the Svarlings. The Norlandic forces retreat while the Skanarri and the Svarlings engage in battle. The Skanarri are forced to withdraw. This battle becomes known as the Battle of Three Armies.
    • The Svarlings officially enter the war, the war thus being renamed to the Nyrheim Northern War due to it no longer only encompassing the Skanarri and Norlandic forces, and the war expanding outside of Norlandic borders.
  • 36th year of the Second Age:
    • On the 11th of Malin's Welcome, the Kingdom of Norland and the Skanarri engage in a large scale battle, in which the Skanarri come out victorious after two days of rough fighting. This battle, known as the Battle near Lake Hakon, was a severe morale booster for the Skanarri.
  • 35th year of the Second Age
    • No military operations are taken throughout the year, as both Norland and the Skanarri take time to recover from the battle a year before.
  • 36th year of the Second Age
    • No major skirmishes occur throughout the year.
  • 37th year of the Second Age
    • Small-scale troop movements are reported by both sides, though there are no major skirmishes throughout the year.
  • 38th year of the Second Age
    • The Knights of Haense intervene in the conflict and call for negotiations with the Skanarri leadership. [3]
    • Skanarri leadership accepts the offer of diplomacy and makes preparations to meet with the knights.
    • Norlandic and Svarling forces meet in a large scale skirmish, with the Norlandic forces coming out on top.
  • 39th year of the Second Age
    • No major skirmishes occur throughout the year.
  • 40th year of the Second Age
    • The Skanarri and Kingdom of Norland agree to make peace in order to defeat the Svarlings, whom seek to destroy both Norland and the Skanarri.
