The House of Montalt, also called the House of the High Mountain, is a Petran dynasty hailing from Valfleur, the former capital of the Commonwealth of the Petra prior to the transition from Almaris to Aevos. In the present day, the house is notable for its knights, which include Dame Maude Fredericka Montalt of the Old Regime, Sir Paul Montalt of Vienne, and their son Sir Peter Montalt of Adria.

House Montalt was founded during the nuptials of Dame Maude Novellen and her consort Sir Paul Ivanovich in Valfleur, Petra. Their wedding was celebrated on the fifteenth anniversary of the Astercalia Finalé, the day in history where the Orenian Monarchy was overthrown in the Heartlands during the Acre Rebellion. Afterwards, Dame Maude and Sir Paul constructed their castle Chateau Montalt.

The Astercalia Finalé is consequential in House Montalt's history. Dame Maude was the firstborn daughter of King Frederick I, the ruling monarch of the Kingdom of Oren that was established following the destruction of the Holy Orenian Empire. Dame Maude witnessed the death of her father and mother Vivenne of Savoy, before being kidnapped by House von Draco. Paul, Captain of the King's Guard, was nearly slain by Prince Hadrian van Aert in a duel. His older brother Saviley Ivanovich rescued him, and then rescued Dame Maude from the von Draco's castle not long afterwards.

The house takes its name from the ancestral seat of Maude Fredericka's father Frederick I, King of Oren, Mount Garmont, from which the name "Montalt" (Common: High Mountain) was obtained. The Razing of Mount Garmont, transpiring during the Acre Rebellion, was responsible for the destruction of the castle by Orenian Royalist forces who mistakenly thought it was an Acrean occupied fortress. The bones of the fortress survived, and the Ruins of Mount Garmont was the location where members of the Old Regime would knight people who had succeeded in their Knightly Trials.

House Montalt is considered to be a mixed Heartlander and Highlander house. The founders each claim descent from Heartlander and Highlander historical figures. For instance, Paul Dmitrievich Montalt claims descent from St. Arpad, Sir Konyves Ivanovich, and Sir Dima Ivanovich. From House Montalt's matrilineal side, Maude claims descent from House Novellen, including the Holy Orenian Emperor Philip III and King Frederick I of Oren. Despite the mixed culture of the house, it has distinction as a Heartlander house due to it having been founded atop Mount Garmont in the lands that were formerly Mardon.

Almaris | Founding of House Montalt | Commonwealth of the Petra

  • Pavel Ivanovich moves to the Republic of the Petra from the ruins of Old Vienne, accompanying his friends Thomas Balamena and Emilio d'Annaplais.
  • Pavel Ivanovich is entrusted the position as Marshal of The Pykes, the military of the Commonwealth of the Petra, by Regent Paul Temesch and Dame Catherine of Furnestock. He reforms the military into the Petran Republican Forces (PRF).
  • Pavel Ivanovich is knighted by Grand Master Ser Bernard of Brasca and Maude Fredericka Novellen of the Old Regime for his service in the Commonwealth during the Crusades against the witches of Serheim.
  • There is contention between Old Guard Petrans such as Sir Paul Montalt, Sir Valentin Mareno, and the Balianese immigrants who accompany Constanz Novellen, Prince of Balian, to the Commonwealth of the Petra. As Constanz cements his marriage with Renilde with the Archduke Paul Temesch, the knights Valentin Mareno, Pavel Ivanovich, and Edmond de Rouen come together to discuss their worries about the future.
  • Upon Sir Pavel resigning his post as the Marshal of Petra, the military is reconstituted into the Sons of Petra and given a new leader. During this time, Sir Pavel duels numerous members of the Sons of Petra to first blood for training, including Renilde's consort Constanz of Balian, and defeats them. Animosity brews between both factions, as Sir Pavel was passed over for the position of Knight Paramount twice, once at the behest of Constanz of Balian, who refers to him behind closed doors as eccentric and distrust worthy.
  • Maude Fredericka Novellen and Pavel Ivanovich begin courting. Eventually, the two marry, and Pavel takes on the name Paul Montalt as her consort.

  • Heinrik Sarkozic appeals to Sir Paul Montalt for his vote in a Crowsmoot to decide who shall be the Duke of Adria. As the Ivanovich elector, Sir Paul Montalt consults his wife Dame Maude Montalt, and they cast their vote for Heinrik to be named Duke of Adria.

Almaris | Petran Civil War

  • As tensions ensued between Sir Paul and the High Table of the Commonwealth of the Petra, he entered exile and joined the Ferrymen. More recently, the House of Montalt fought in the Petran Civil War. Sir Paul Montalt was called back to the mainland by Archduchess Renilde I, who suspected that her husband the Archduke Constanz Novellen sought to usurp her because of love letters that implied she had taken a paramour named Prince Marius Audemar of Haense. Upon attempting to seize the city from Renilde, Constanz witnessed as an army of Haeseni soldiers and Petran Republican Forces immediately countered the attempted coup d'état. Due to unforeseen reasons, some of which historians do not understand to this day, this did not result in violence and both parties went their separate ways for the evening. The Sons of Petra resistance movement shored up timber walls around the capital of Valfleur, as the Petran Republican Forces occupied Castle et Moere and the surrounding countryside.
  • Over the following year, a few battles transpired, in which Sir Paul and his allies Sir Valentin Mareno, and the Ferryman mercenary Vyllaenen claimed multiple military successes. Sir Paul executed the rebel knight Dame Livia d'Anpalais, and was said to have tortured and executed multiple members of the Sons of Petra. He would go on to command the Battle of Valfleur alongside his long-time friend Sir Valentin Mareno, leading the Petran Loyalist Partisans to victory against the Sons of Petra and Constanz Novellen. Afterwards, Sir Paul declared himself Grand Knight of the Commonwealth of the Petra with the tacit agreement of Archduchess Renilde I, and knighted all of his fighters who partook in the battle. He released orders for the evictions of all who sided with Archduke Constanz, whom he gave the epithet of "The Pennyduke", stripping his nobility and station from him. As Grand Knight, Paul allowed the defeated rebels to withdraw their money from the National Bank, as well as to take all their belongings with them when they left. Each manor belonging to the rebels would be repatriated by the state under his command, and he pardoned the House de Rouen for fighting with the Sons of Petra during the war.
