Modern History of Aegis

On the Wandering Wizard and other Topics

The earliest and most widely cited accounts from Aegis come from the personal writings of the Wandering Wizard. This being, thought by many to be one of the famed Aengul, had unparalleled skill in the arcane arts which he used to assist the Descendants, ranging from lifting a bucket from a broken well in Serpent’s Ridge or battling monstrous hordes sent by the Undead Necromancers. Availer, as he was known to the elves, was revered by all who stood in the light. His most famous tome, Chronicles of the Ancient History, starts out by describing the creation of the world, which the Creator formed from the Void so that it could become a theater, a testing ground of sorts for those He chose to create. The Creator, or God, as he has later been referred to, very closely resembles the Orenian Creator, and it can be assumed that they are the same being, notwithstanding slight doctrinal differences. Availer directly refers to the Creator by the name “the Merciful Creator of the Seven Skys.” There has long been much speculation over what this exactly means, what the seven skys are, and if they even exist. Some, such as the Mali’Aheral, dismiss it is the foolish writings of an old, addled man, who perhaps had some insignificant talents with magic. Some argue that the Descendants are blessed, or, some might say, cursed, to inhabit is the seven skys, while other argue it is merely another way to speak of the heavens and cosmos.

Chronicles describe the story of the first man and woman, who bore four sons, Malin, the eldest, and the familiar Krug, Horen, and Urguan. This is where skeptics begin to poke holes Wandering Wizard’s account, as the question, “Where did the wives for the four brother’s come from?” is begged. It’s quite frankly is impossible to find an adequate answer, but the overarching explanation holds the truth. According the Chronicles, the four descendent races came into being; the elves of Malinor as the eldest race, and the dwarves the youngest. According to the text, they lived in peace for centuries, until Iblees, one of Daemon, the counterpart to the holy Aengul, planted seeds of corruption in the hearts of the four brothers and their peoples, setting them up for ultimate betrayal. All but Krug succumbed to the seduction of this exiled Daemon, and all the Descendants would suffer for their choice. After a fierce and incredibly destructive thirty year battle with Krug and his brothers, Iblees was only defeated through divine intervention. After an Aengul and Daemon legion descended from the Seven Skys and defeated his hordes and bound him in the Void, Iblees cast terrible curses upon each of the legendary Brothers and their Descendants: to Malin, silent forests devoid of children, to Krug, incredible lust for the glory of battle and the blood of their foes, to Urguan, breathtaking greed and miserable short stature, and to Horen, that his children’s flames would be snuffed out in a blink of an eye. A great darkness descended over the land then, and there was tearing at hair and rending of garments. However, one of the Aengul soldiers stepped forward, and though unable to undo the great evil already done, he offered gifts: Long life and serenity to the Elves, Honor to the Orcs, great strength of mind and body to the Dwarves, and the vague promise of a chance to explore the Seven Skys to Humanity. Then, the army vanished.

The Great Collapse

The so called “Great Collapse” was heavily debated among Aegisian and Anthosians historians. The only known fragment directly referring to the Great Collapse is within dwarven records, and it says only that Emperor Thorngar Ironborn of the Khorvad Empire attempted to destroy all knowledge of the Kingdom of Urguan. The “fragment of Urguan” is brought together by the dwarven King, Simmpa, and they siege Kal’Urguan and Thorngar is killed in a duel with Simmpa. Beyond this fragment, there is overwhelming evidence that some type of cataclysmic event suddenly decimated all of the cultures of Aegis, destroying over a thousand years of records and histories. A great deal of valuable knowledge has been lost, too little preserved by the relatively meagre efforts by a handful of dedicated elves. Orcish mythology seems to have been passed down orally through war chants, sung on the eve of battle, but it is notably lacking in realistic accounts of the early days of the Descendants. The High Prince of Malinor and the Story of Laurelin makes vague references to a time called the “First Age,” referring to Laurelin as being founded by the remains of a small wood elven colony at the beginning of the Second Age, which appears to have started before 1300, though literally no records exist before 1301. This lends further evidence to the existence of this cataclysm, though, one must imagine it had some sort of effect on the memories of those that survived it, as none have ever been able to speak or write of what happened. Near the end of the Descendant’s time in Aegis, five scrolls, or more appropriately, fragments of scrolls, were discovered. They originated in the early days of the world, but they offered little new insight into those early days; indeed, if anything, they begged more questions than answers.

Malinor

The Holy Princedom of Malinor, along with the Grand Kingdom of Urguan, has the most thorough records of the early period of Aegis, and thus, the easiest to reconstruct with acceptable accuracy. High Prince Native and Prince Toren's accounts of the early days after the founding of Laurelin in the early 1300s or late 1200s are the oldest surviving records. Laurelin was founded in the trees, and it was the jewel of the Holy Princedom of Malinor. Some say that the souls of all Mali long to once again shelter under the graceful trees of Laurelin. From this position of power south of the Cloud Temple, the home of the monks, Native, by all accounts, ruled with a fair, kind, and skilled hand, promoting competent elves to assist him in governing. The first Council was made up of several notable elves, including Prince Toren the Farmer, Prince Talion the Merchant and Prince Flefal the Traitor. The original guard force of Malinor were the Sentinels, headed by Prince Flefal the Traitor. The druidic order resided in the deep reaches of Laurelin, and was always a center of mischief under the guidance of Wayward Druid Resperin. Some call this period the first Restoration of the Druids, but what they were restored from remains unclear. As their population swelled, the elves expanded from Laurelin first to the picturesque town of Ravenhold and then to the villages of Serpent's Ridge and Elvindale. Prince Mylas also constructed Malin’s Sister, later referred to as the Sister City, a suburb of Laurelin. High Prince Native and Prince Flefal took on expanding Laurelin itself, adding several districts to the original city. All of the elves, regardless of race, lived in relative harmony, at least compared to the heady days of racial conflict that would come with time. It would be a century before such cultural identities would begin to emerge. Prince Flefal, under the direction of High Prince Native, constructed a railway between Laurelin and Ravenhold. According to a multitude of personal accounts, High Prince Native commonly stood at a counter to help an ever increasingly long line of elves in finding both homes and employment. The completion of The Gauntlet is perhaps the most significant event of this era. Warriors and acrobats from all the realms flocked to Laurelin to try their hand at the perilous obstacle course, packing the coffers of the Holy Princedom of Malinor in the process. The elves prospered, blissfully unaware of the horrors to come.

Urguan

Meanwhile, King Simmpa has consolidated his control of the dwarven clans and they too expanded to new holds. He created a High Council to help him rule, but his reign was short, which set precedent for the dizzying amount of Kings that have taken the throne after his departure. Kal'Urguan grew large, and new cities such as Kal'Bryst and Kal'Alras were founded. The floating village of Kal'Rog sprung up, a bustling port for both elven and dwarven merchants, sailors and travellers. Peace did not last long in the halls of Urguan, and but for two years, none tested the might of the Dwarven Legion. In the second year of his reign, Simmpa fell ill, and he appointed Charles Grimlie as overseer. King Charles later took the throne and ruled with an iron first, crushing all dissent within the Kingdom of Urguan as it expanded. Hiebe founded the Dwarven Legion during King Charles’ reign, and the Dwarven Legion would grow to be one of the fiercest fighting forces in Aegis. Additionally, the sleepy merchant town of Kal’Alras is founded by Rasun Goldhand and others, though it would be several years before events came to a head there. Beyond this, the dwarves began to accumulate their considerable wealth, enough to match all the other nations of Aegis combined.

Oren

It is relatively well known that the first King of Oren, Daniel Horen, later known as Saint Dan, established the Mountain City, Al’Khazar, before 1300. His rule was fair if not incredibly successful, and Oren expanded out from the capital northwards. The Mages Guild, under Archmage Slayer, established their first tower on the outskirts of Al’Khazar, and Archmage Ambros was a great ally of Saint Daniel. It was in 1301 that his Senchesel and Lord of Winterfell, Pampo Perea, staged a coup in Al’Khazar and overthrew Saint Daniel, crowning himself King of all Oren, which consisted of the capital of Al’Khazar along with the towns of Alstion, Snowy Fields and Winterfell. Pampo Perea formed a Council around him that included Everard Hightower, among others. King Perea married the baker Dawn in 1302, and they had a son, Brett, who was born shortly before the first Orenian festival. Peace reigned throughout human lands during this early period as the Orenian Guard formed around leaders Lord Haelphon, a half elf, and Vardak. A Cathedral was constructed in central Al’Khazar, with Everard of the great Hightower line serving as its first Archbishop. To the south of Al’Khazar, another human town was founded, the desert oasis of Kramaroe, which sprung up from an inn on North Road. Among the many notable residents of this storied town was Delaselva the Seer.

Krugmar

The uruks of Krugmar established their capital of Sanjezel in the South, near the Cloud Temple of Aegis and the forests of Malinor. Other notable towns established under the first Rex, Tyther, were the great City of Sanhar and the Nomad Village. Shamanism began to take it’s roots during this period. The first crisis for the orcs was the reappearance of Or’ta, a monumental figure from the renowned Clan Wars. He launched devastating attacks on Sanhar, sacking it several times. He was eventually defeated by a warband lead by Craotor’Lur, but notably absent during these events was Tythus. Discontent began to spread among the orcs, especially Mogroka’Gorkil and Gorefang. Also to appear during this period was the ecoterrorist Uggg, who staged many protests against various construction projects that were destroying the natural beauty of Aegis.

Kal’Bryst

Why the Undead chose the North as the focus of their initial onslaught is a matter of specualtion, but regardless, the North bore the brunt of the attack. The first battle was at the now famous city of Kal’Bryst, a dwarven outpost in the North. Nothing could prepare the residents for the hell that would reign down on them that fateful night in 1301 when the relentless Undead hordes fell upon their helpless village. It was an unconditional slaughter of the residents, and by the time a call for aid was received by the peoples of Aegis, the city was being consumed by unnatural flame. Still, the Nations rode north, lead by the grey robed Wandering Wizard. The dwarven party was the first to arrive, and after a brief skirmish with the previously unknown enemy in which they suffered heavy casualties, they withdrew with whatever survivors they could find to the forward camp set up by Availer. As orcs, elves, humans and dwarves gathered for a counterattack, it became clear that this menace was like none other faced by the Descendants. Hordes of reanimated and decaying corpses milled about the city, falling upon any living thing. And pale skeletal archers kept sentry, ready to lose a flight of arrows at any that might challenge them. These horrors were small in comparison to the abominations found in the undead themselves; neither living nor dead, their kept their grotesque faces and bodies shrouded in hoods so that all that could be seen were two soulless eyes. The full extent of their dark magic and necromancy was not known at the time, but it would soon become startlingly clear that the Descendants stood little match.

A call went forward through the assembled armies that it was time for a counterattack. The largest army ever assembled charged forth under the command of the Wandering Wizard. Unspeakable spells and boiling firebolts exploded through their ranks as they clashed with the hordes of skeletons and zombies, and warriors of all races fell in droves. The armies clashed back and forth, neither gaining the advantage, until a giant stomped and hammered a path through the Descendant’s ranks, and the great army wavered, almost breaking. But then, High Prince Native of Malinor and his elven archers appeared, bringing the giant down with a single volley of arrows, turning the battle against the Undead Necromancers. The archmages of the Mages Guild cleared a path to the city, and the great army charged through, entering bitter street fighting against the necromancers and what was left of their horde. Towers exploded as the Undead threw every incantation they had against the Descendants, but it was all in vain as each Necromancer was cornered and cut down. The price of victory was high though, and Kal’Bryst had to be abandoned, for the Undead’s corruption was too much for any living being to tolerate. In the wake of the battle, still little was known of the Undead, but one name was on every tongue in Aegis: Iblees.

Interregnum

Celebrating their victory, the Descendants did not know that their respite would be brief, especially in the case of Oren. From the fortress of Unk, the Undead struck out through Oren’s Northern realms, burning the towns of Alstion and Winterfell, cutting a path of destruction south. Bodies rotted in the street as a darkness settled over the human lands, and the Prophet Rott arrived under the guise of the Novelist in the Mountain City, Al’Khazar. He spread chaos and distress through Oren, preparing it for swift Undead annexation.

In Malinor, the treachery of Prince Flefal, now known alternatively as Mayctor or simply The Traitor, became apparent. He had corrupted many of the Sentinels, and thus, a new guard force was created under Commander Blackthorn, the Wardens of Malinor. They prepared to march north to confront the Undead, but High Prince Native held them back, concerned that the Undead hordes would attack the lightly defended sacred forests of Malinor. Also in the South, the orcs and dwarves fought a short war for unknown reasons now known as the Caravan War. There were several battles in orcish lands, most ending in the orcs rebuffing dwarven war parties. The war ended inconclusively, with neither side making any land gains. King Charles Grimlie, driven mad by the corruption of the undead, then waged an insane war against Oren. Discontent and unrest spread throughout Urguan, with the Grandaxe clan rending in two while Kal’Alras declared it’s independence. King Charles Grimlie was forced to resign by his council, and King Belin “The Industrious” was crowned.

It was during this brief respite that the the Ascended lead by the Sages, revealed themselves to the Descendants. They were of all races and had been chosen by the Aengul Aeriel to the fight Iblees and his Undead generals. They established both the United Aegis Coalition, which was an alliance of all the nations and guilds in Aegis, along with the city of Haven, far to the West of Urguan.

Pampo and Edmund

As Undead forces marshalled on Oren’s northern border, a call for aid was sent South, to the armies of the Elves, Dwarves, and Uruks. The Wardens of Malinor set but before aid could arrive, an assault was launched on on Al’Khazar in the year 1304. In the initial hours of the battle, the Undead Overlord was struck down, but rose again even more powerful through the use of Iblees’ dark magics. The Orenian guard was slowly pushed back to the palace while the Undead Necromancers destroyed the city around them. The palace was bombarded for hours as the guard, commanded by King Perea personally, fought a fierce defense in the ruins. This bought precious time for the civilian population to evacuate, but just as the armies from the South were to arrive, the undead broke through the Orenian lines. The Seven Skys screamed as the Overlord and King Pampo Perea clashed in the throne room, and they wept when King Perea was cut down, his life snuffed out by the undead’s dark power. As the armies of Oren wailed at the loss of their King, a flash of brilliant light shattered the darkness as the Wandering Wizard engaged the Prophet and the Overseer. Aegis shook violently as their deadly duel raged, and as the palace crumbled, Availer obliterated both the necromancers. The victory was temporary, as the Prophet and Overlord would rise from the Nether again, but it bought needed time for humanity to rebuild Al’Khazar and crown their new King, Edmund Sheffield.

Alstion and Snowy Fields

The people of Oren rallied to their King, and set their eyes North, to rebuild Winterfell and Alstion and fortify the town of Snowy Field. As Oren reorganized internally and Edmund Sheffield married his Queen, Ivrae, the Undead launched new assaults from the North. The battle for Snowy Fields was both long and fierce, but it finally fell in 1308. The Undead used the keep as their staging ground for their decade long siege of Alstion. The armies of Anthos sent reinforcements north to hold Alstion at all costs, and the costs were dear. Archmage Freya commanded the defenders in many of their sallies against the Undead in Snowy Fields, of which there were dozens of skirmishes that set the Undead back considerably. Finally, enough forces were concentrated in Alstion that an expeditionary force went North to discover the origin of the Undead assaults, and the obsidian fortress of Unk was discovered. It was besieged several times before the Sages arrived to finally breach the walls after an inexplicable incident involving cake. Alstion, however, would fall soon after in 1314. It was wiped off the face of Aegis by a blizzard created by the darkest of magics. With it’s fall, the Undead were no longer hemmed in the North, and struck out towards what they believed was the undefended South. Many of the former residents of Alstion and Snowyfield established the small but well defended town of Talun far to the northeast of Al’Khazar, but it was never attacked by the Undead.

The South

In the South, life continued much as before the Undead invasion. High Prince Native married Sorrius at the Sister City, and Princesses Indelwehn and Mylas ascended to the High Council. The Wardens grew in strength, expanding and fortifying their base outside of Laurelin as well as Laurelin and Ravenhold’s defenses. However, as the elves prospered, discontent reigned among the orcs as an uprising against Rex Tythus began. It was lead by Gorefang and Mogroka’Gorkil who besieged Sanjezel to attempt to dethrone Tythus. However, before the battle was even won, Gorefang and Mogroka would klomp to decide who would challenge Tythus for Rex, and though the bout of fists and tooth lasted for four days, neither emerged the victor, as both collapsed in exhaustion. Then, as the two sides began to prepare for a civil war, the Wandering Wizard appeared, and in an appeal to the orcs, asked that they form a government together. Thus, it was decided that both would rule Krugmar as Warlords. They then marched into Sanjezel and challenged Rex Tythus together, and with his death, the revolt came to an end. Gorefang would later depart for parts unknown, leaving Mogroka to become the sole Rex of Krugmar.

After the Wardens of Malinor and Krughai of Krugmar returned to the South from Al’Khazar, it became apparent that a new Undead outpost had been established by Wrath. Wrath was running a slave operation out of the bastion, named Wrath’s Clutch, and numerous men and women were captured and tortured there. It was located just South of Alras, but the Alrasians refused to do much of anything to dislodge Wrath and his gang. Numerous attempts were made to destroy the fortress by Malinor, Urguan, and Krugmar, to no avail, but the elves and orcs were soon distracted by an all out Undead assault on the Orcish capital of Sanjezel in the year 1316.

As the Undead hordes neared the great wall protecting Sanjezel, the orcs dug in, preparing for a siege. The Undead Necromancers appeared at the front of their army and began launching gigantic fireballs at the wall, which crashed against the sandstone, mud and brick. After a sustained barrage, gaps began appearing, and zombies flooded into the opening and skeletons sniped at the orcish defenders. Before the battle could turn against the orcs, however, a great cry was heard from the West as the armies of Malinor rushed out of the forest, Princess Indelwehn and High Princess Soriuss at their head. Cries of “The elves are coming!” rang through the humans that were fighting with the orcs, and as the elven warriors took their positions in the wall, Mogroka and Princess Indelwehn met to plan the counterattack. The Wardens and other elves set up a firing line along the openings in the orcish wall as the orcs and others, aided by the Ascended, charged forward to meet the Undead. The battle raged for an hour until the elves’ quivers were depleted, and as one they rushed forward, blades gleaming from the fires that raged through the orcish desert. With the elven reinforcements, the orcs overwhelmed the Undead, and the Battle of Sanjezel was won. The great victory solidified the friendship between the orcs and elves, and the alliance between Malinor and Krugmar, the Malin-Krug Pact, was formed following the battle.

The Verge

The Verge was a realm that the Descendants entered in 1320. It was a strange and nearly inhospitable place, overrun with spiders and slimes. Alrasian, Orenian, and Dwarven adventurers banded together in Tazarak, a small refuge from the chaos that reigned in Verge. The elves established two settlements, and the orcs, one, but the Verge was such an awful place that eventually even Tazarak became a ghost town as the residents woul rather face Undead assaults over constant siege by slimes.

Betrayals

Adding fuel to speculation of Undead scheming, it was revealed that the Tazarak Alliance’s leaders were in league with the Undead, with both King Algrim of Urguan, who had been crowned after King Belin’s death, and King Edmund Sheffield of Oren being revealed as Undead, along with King Syrio of Alras widely known as having trading ties with the denizens of the Nether. A mob hunted down King Algrim in 1323 after his oaths to Iblees were overheard by an elf, and he was captured during the human and orc skirmish in the ruins of Kramaroe. After the short reign of King Gotrek, a War Council of sage dwarves is set up to rule the nation in the stead of a King.

King Edmund’s betrayal, in 1321, however, was a particularly hard blow for the Descendants, as after he was accused of treachery, he transformed into an Undead and ate his wife Ivrae in front of many Orenians. He escaped with his son, Enor, in tow. Oren then descended into chaos. Two major factions emerged; one to crown Dawn Perea, owner of the famous Dawn’s Bakeries and widow of King Pampo Perea, and the other to crown Saint Daniel, who had returned from his travels. Neither would seize the throne, however, as Prince Enor returned from the Nether seemingly unharmed, and was placed upon the throne. Relative peace returned to the Orenian realms, but discontent and plans of rebellion boiled beneath the surface as the people chafed under King Enor’s reign,

Included by some in the list of betrayals is that of the Sages of Aeriel, who departed Aegis and abandoned the Descendants to their fate at the hands of Iblees in 1322. They took with them the city of Haven in the West and the fortress of Aeriel in the North.

Wrath’s Clutch and Fort Fairleaf

After the Dwarves and Elves collaborated in the destruction of an Undead Keep in construction South of Laurelin, they decided to finally do something about Wrath’s Clutch. Both the Wardens and Legion build fortresses outside of the Clutch, and besieged the fortress. It fell after a large assault involving the efforts of both armies; the elves with their bows and the dwarves with their war-axes. With the slaver and necromancer Wrath finally vanquished from the South, some elves began celebrating and boasting of how they had singlehandedly defeated Wrath. The Dwarves took offense at this, and the Legion decided to besiege for Fairleaf, the elven fortress outside the Clutch, and demanded it be torn down. It nearly came to blows, as Prince Quazar the Wardens desired war with the dwarves, but a message from Native carried by Princess Indelwehn arrived ordering the Wardens back to Malinor. They complied, and the dwarves tore down Fort Fairleaf. The incident left bitter tastes in both nation’s mouths, and threw cold water on their warming relationship. It was during this crisis that Lirinya, owner of the Treetop inn, was raised to the High Council to replace Princess Ariana.

The Fall of Kramaroe

The Undead, infuriated by their loss at Sanjezel, struck out at the relatively undefended town of Kramaroe in 1323. It burned quickly, though the Undead did not claim the town as their own. Instead, after a brief infestation by bandits in which the once proud town became known as Sunspear, it was claimed by both Oren and Krugmar. After a drawn out battle between the Orenian Guard and a few orcs, the humans claimed victory, and began transforming the town into the feudal holding of Galahar, which would provide grain and other crops to a nearly surrounded Al’Khazar, as well as securing the route to the Whispering Isles, another Orenian settlement ruled by Brett Perea, the orphaned son of Pampo Perea. The Whispering Isles was also the home of the Holmes Detective Agency, a guild which was dedicated to solving crimes throughout Aegis, as well as the original branch of the Orenian Orthodox church.

The Great War

The Great War began with a series of skirmishes between the Orcs and Dwarves outside of Sanjezel. After witnessing these skirmished, Grand Councillor Valen Grandaxe prepares the Legion for war. The Wardens of Malinor aid their orcish allies, and a secret human-dwarven alliance is revealed when Oren begins to aid Urguan. Rex Mogroka’Gorkil of Krugmar and Prince Mylas of the Holy Princedom of Malinor, accompanied by Hochmeister Gaius Marius, marched on the capital of the Grand Kingdom of Urguan, Kal’Urguan, in 1336. Gaius Marius and his Teutonic Order had made a name for themselves in recent years by attacking the minor guilds of Aegis, destroying their fortresses and assimilating many of their members, and they grew to the size of a small nation, based out of the heavily fortified city of Nuremberg. Gaius saw Oren as corrupt, and was determined to see it in new hands. It is suspected by many that it was all under the machinations of the Undead, in a very successful attempt to distract and weaken the Descendants in order to disrupt their response to a major assault. The Great War had many small battles, and Gaius Marius and his Teutonic Order, aided at times by Blackaxe Dwarves, the Wardens of Malinor, and the Krughai of Krugmar, attacked Al’Khazar on five separate occasions attempting to bring about political change. Though at least two of these attacks succeeded in defeating the Orenian Guard, none of the victories were substantial enough to unseat King Edmund. The most noteworthy of the assaults involved the Teutons entering Al’Khazar through the sewer system and the entrance in the basement of the Therving Tavern in addition to the assault where Gaius and the Teutons stole robes from the Temple Monks and used those disguises to infiltrate Oren and corner King Edmund Sheffield.

The Defeat of the Wandering Wizard(1336)

Few remarked upon the Wandering Wizard’s protracted absences, but the Descendants took notice when he sent out a call for aid in transporting three artifacts to the Cloud Temple. The Undead launched wave after vicious wave against him and the armies that had heard his call, and in the end, it was too much in the open ground, and the Wandering Wizard and his defenders fell, the armies scattered throughout the land. Panic began to set in for many when it was revealed the artifacts that were stolen by the Undead were in fact drake eggs, and that Iblees would be able to use his dark magics in the Nether to corrupt and shape the drakes.

Changes in Malinor

It started rather subtly. First, warden recruits were withdrawn from Laurelin's gatehouse. Then, druidic officials were found murdered, which lead to a cycle of killings in Malinor which the Wardens refused to investigate. Ebs and Sythra, a new arrival in Laurelin, investigated further, and found connections to Prince Quazar, who became Commander of the Wardens after Blackthorne’s disappearance. The pair went to Indelwehn, and she went to Native and the High Council. The night before the discovered coup, after an assassination attempt by the Wardens, High Prince Native disbanded the Wardens. Sythra was appointed to head the new guard, the Vanguard, which would be permanently based in Laurelin. The Bearded Elf then announced that he was departing Malinor, stepping down from High Prince. Many elves present were overcome with grief and sorrow. The High Princes final act as High Prince of the Holy Princedom of Malinor was to appoint Ebs as Prince of Malinor.

Immediately, the first election for High Prince in memory was called. Princes Lafthi, Toren, and Ebs with Princesses Indelwehn and Lirinya convened in secret in Lafthi's treetop home in downtown Laurelin. After two rounds of voting, Indelwehn was elected High Princess of Malinor. A new age was dawning on Malinor, and none could have possibly realized that the undiscovered taint that lay hidden in the new High Princess would influence the course of the nation.

The Fall of Al’Khazar and Retreat from the North(1337)

Historians agree that Al’Khazar was turning point in the war with the Undead, and that it marked the beginning of the end of the nations of Aegis. As Enor’s grip on the throne loosened and open talk of rebellion became common, but before the flame of revolt was lit, the Undead launched an all out assault comprised of over twenty Necromancers on the human capital. It was simply too much for the Orenians to hold back, and before aid could arrive, the battle was over. The once great city of Al’Khazar was utterly decimated and poisoned by the Undead’s latest weapon, miasma. The people of Oren scattered, some heading North to the fortified town of Winterfell, ruled by Ser Robin Drake, while other scattered South to Galahar and the Whispering Isles. The Whispering Isles would later sink beneath the waves, but the center of Orenian culture solidified in Galahar, which quickly underwent considerable fortification. King Enor disappeared during the confusion following Al’Khazar’s fall, and Hawk Whitestorm reconstituted the Orenian government.

Initially, there was a token effort by Oren to hold its remaining northern territories, but when it became clear there was not even a usable road to Winterfell, the situation deteriorated quickly. Crimson Vale, New Alstion, Talun, and finally Winterfell were all destroyed by the Undead in a matter of days as what few people remained in the North retreated southwards.

Phoenix Rebellion

It is little known that the Phoenix Rebellion(sometimes referred to as the Phoenix Revolution) began as a plot to blow up the Al’Khazar sewers in order incapacitate the Orenian Guard and overthrow Enor. This plan was scrapped following the destruction of Al’Khazar at the hands of the Undead, but revolutionary sentiment continued to stir. When King Enor returned to Aegis after a year of captivity in the Nether, he attempted to dissolve the Council that was governing the remaining fragments of Oren. This lead to fierce accusations of Undead corruption and of Enor’s past mistakes and misrule, especially the collapse of Al’Khazar’s defences in a matter of hours. The Phoenix Rebellion established itself as the primary opposition to Enor, and attracted many of the former members of the Ruling Council, including Eze’kiel Tarus, Zibaen Vivyaen and Throdo Therving. The rebels set their goals at their outpost on the White Road: to dethrone Enor but to preserve the Kingdom of Oren. King Enor, realizing his position as rule was untenable, decided that he had to step down, but his decision to appoint the Hochmeister of the Teutonic Order, Gaius Marius, as King in his place roiled the people of Oren, as they recalled the Sariants’ numerous raids on Al’Khazar. There was also intense opposition to what was seen as the tyrannical military rule present in Sariant lands. The revolutionaries, lead by Eze’kiel Tarus, seized the city of Galahar and refused to acknowledge the Hochmeister as King. Gaius Marius, as a compromise, decided to let the issue of who would be King of Oren lie and formed a dual-monarchy between the newly created Kingdoms of Hanseti(Centered on Konigsberg) and Renatus(centered on Renatus), with Eze’kiel Tarus crowned as the first King of Renatus. Gaius Marius, the Greatest of the Hochmeisters of the Tuetonic Order, would soon fade from the First Sky and be replaced by his Ordenmarchalle, Sam. Also, Enor Sheffield and Dawn Perea decided to strike out on their own and formed the fledgling Kingdom of Salvus on an Island in the West, but the Salvian sun would rise under a different sky.

Queen Cassandra, Alras, and the South

For the period immediately following the fall of Al’Khazar, Queen Cassandra emerged as the chief Undead agent. She launched daring raids on Sanjezel and Laurelin, and started a forest fire that nearly destroyed Malinor. After she was defeated and beheaded following a battle at Galahar, the Undead appeared to draw back for a time, and there was discussion of an offensive to retake Al’Khazar. An attempt to remove the miasma and corrupting Cassandra had spread through central Laurelin, near the Gauntlet, by the Druids and Mages Guild ended in a nether portal appearing in the center of the ruins. It would remain to be seen what role this portal would play.

However, before long, the Undead launched a massive offensive on the City of Alras. The ensuing battle lasted for weeks as the Descendants rallied to defend the city and fought street by street. The gates were breached following a fierce clash on the frozen It was a hopeless effort, and as the boulevards of the inner districts were overrun, an effort to evacuate the remaining Alrasians to Malinor was conducted by elven forces as the remaining forces were trapped inside the cathedral, and though they prepared to make a last valiant stand, they were quickly overwhelmed by the Undead hordes ones their sanctuary was breached.

The fall of Alras brought about a feeling of desperation among the remaining Descendants, as their power to resist the Undead dwindled as the Undead’s own power grew. Princess Lirinya of Malinor was soon corrupted by the Undead, and launched an offensive from the South, first burning Ravenhold and Elvendale, destroying both. She then launched an attack on Laurelin which was beaten back, but not before corrupting the city center. It became apparent that Lirinya was being assisted by a member of the elven government. There were efforts to investigate who was influencing events, but following High Princess Indelwehn’s betrayal of Krugmar, when it was discovered that the High Princess has been tainted by the undead during her captivity at Wrath’s Clutch. However, Indelwehn attempted to assassinate Prince Ebs, who was driven underground. She was eventually removed by Princess Sythra, Prince Toren, and High Prince Haelphon, who along with Prince Ebs and Prince Quazar, elected Haelphon, a half elf, High Prince of Malinor. He would remain High Prince during the final days as the elves of Malinor withdrew into Laurelin and fortified the city for the coming onslaught.

The Final Struggle

Shortly after the Undead attacked and decimated the Dwarven capital of Kal’Urguan, Native, the former High Prince of Malinor, returned from his travels to rally the few that could still fight to come forward as champions to venture into the Nether to defeat the Undead. It was obvious the the Descendants were losing the war, badly, and that merely defending the shrinking patches of Aegis that were still habitable was no longer a viable strategy. Champions were chosen, and as they ventured into the Nether, those remaining behind prepared for the worst. The Champions fought against bitter Undead resistance, but they eventually broke through and retrieved the Axe of Krug, which was then cast into the void in an attempt to destroy the Undead once and for all. And, it appeared for a moment that the Champions had succeeded, as the Nether began to crumble around them. However, as the survivors emerged from the portal in Laurelin, Iblees’ drakes swept in from the North, burning Galahar and Sanjezel before any could react.

Flight From Aegis

The appearance of the drakes and Iblees’ survival of the destruction of the Undead was simply too much for the Descendants. A full rout towards the Verge portal began, and those already in the Verge prepared to make for calmer shores aboard great ships that had been constructed for such a purpose. The collected knowledge of the elven people was lost when the Great Library within the Mother Tree was incinerated with the rest of Laurelin. Hundreds perished as drakes continued to destroy everything the Descendants had built, and finally the Cloud Temple fell, collapsing in on itself. As the last survivors fled, Aegis was left a broken and diseased land. Years later, it would become apparent that the Descendants lost more than just their homes that fateful day.

Summary

Iblees, the Fallen One, is the first Fallen Daemon, and was once one of the greatest worshipers to the Mighty and Benevolent Creator. A heretofore squalid protector of the Void, and Kin spirits to the Aenguls was plagued by the atrocity implanted into his mind, he was the source of the curse imposed on the Four Brothers, Malin, Krug, Urguan, and Horen. Iblees led the Undead in their assault upon the world of Aegis and after the success of the Champions in sealing off the Nether, unleashed his own rage upon the Cloud Temple of Aegis. The status of Iblees was not entirely known for over a hundred years, with some claiming that he never really left and others saying he has been vanquished for good. Such changed in Athera, where after an expedition to ancient ruins, he was released once more into the world. Much of what is known about Iblees was written by the Wandering Wizard in the Ancient History.

The Descent

From the Seven Skies Iblees descended, the fallen of the brethren of Aenguls and Daemons, he took form as a kind and gentle man who loved all things delicate and pure. He was quick to befriend Horen, Malin, and Urguan, but Krug held doubts. After the three brothers' persistence into trusting the stranger, Iblees was forced to turn to a different method in dealing with Krug. For discernment unknown, Iblees had the will and drive to raze all God had created. His drive for complete and utter destruction fueled his devious plots to ruin the realm of Aegis and sowed seeds of seeds of evil into the minds of the Four Brothers, prying on their needs and lusts.

The Promises

To Malin, lover of nature, he promised him many children. He promised him that their laughter would resonate across their forest homes and that he would be content. Malin did not want anything more in this world than a bountiful amount of young to occupy the barren forests.

To Urguan, he promised infinite wealth of Gems and Ores, colours and crystals he could never imagine. To this, Urguan's greed failed him.

To Horen, his anxiety came in the form of wishing to see his great cities and settlements living to their full potential. He begged for longevity, and desired nothing more than time, and Iblees struck the cord and promised immortality.

Krug was the most resilient to Iblees' deception. Unwavering to greed, lust, and envy, Iblees grew furious over Krug's adamant mindset. He then challenged Iblees to open combat in rage.

The Transformation and Defeat

The whole world witnessed Iblees' transformation into a hideous beast of the void. His skin turned into scales, fangs erupted and dark horns exploded from his head. He grew large wings and began to breath terrible fire. All stood in shock and horror as the man they once trusted became a demon, a harbinger of death and misfortune. The beast terrified all inhabitants of Aegis. Animals fled, and the sons of the Descendants were too weak of blood to stand before a being of such evil and fury. Only the sons Malin, Urguan, Horen and Krug were able to withstand the evil. In Iblees' right hand, a sword wrought in flame emerged. Krug, naked and unarmed charged at the Daemon, throwing himself against the scalding scales of Iblees. He screamed in agony as his skin burned and decayed, becoming green and molten. Iblees was knocked off his feet. He stood up, heaving in rage and fury as flames exploded from the pores of his skin, he roared in anger and where he struck his sword the land collapsed and the ground erupted.

And lo, great was the valour of Urguan and the strength of Krug as they fought the beast. Powerful were the arms that carried Krug's Axe and strong was Horen's heart as they fought in open combat upon the plains of Aegis. Malin's sword was fast and swift, smiting Iblees upon his breast and sides. For thirty years The Descendants fought Iblees, the world became a war torn mess. The dead were defiled, summoned from their graves to follow Iblees' mastery. The more mortal descendants died, the greater Iblees' armies grew. It was a sad chapter in the World of Aegis, and in an act of prayer, the brothers threw up their arms to God in prayer and in agony. Their creations destroyed, their children massacred, woe to the Sons of Man and Woman.

Krug grew bitter, his resentment of his brothers increased for befriending such a beast. Urguan grew greedy, he fought chivalrously but began to hide his treasures underground. Malin feared for the lives of his children and did not leave his forest sanctuary. Horen was too ambitious, too weak of a leader, many of his people fought for Iblees and many of them died of recklessness. It seemed the world was destined for ruin. Iblees grew in strength and the Descendants weakened, until one day, with their courage aggregated. Beautiful horns echoing all across the skies of Aegis. God had heard their prayers. An army of Aenguls and Daemons from the seven skies had appeared on the grand shores of Aegis. Their majesty and beauty so strong that all The Descendants could see was a flash of power white light erupt from the east. Only Malin with his strong sight could see the figures of light as they sped across the skies towards the armies of Iblees.

Iblees' soldiers burned where they stood. The thousands of Skeletons and Zombies burst into a fiery inferno, and his living servants fled. In the middle of the world, he was cast down and chained by the Aenguls and Daemons. A robed figure with brown hair and a black wreathed apparition stood before him. They were a terrible image to look at, all shyed down and bowed in their majesty and glory. They stood before Iblees, knowing he was immortal and could not be killed, sentencing him to banishment to the void where his dark soul would be forever trapped in torment.

The Curses

Before they could complete the sentence, Iblees stood tall for one last time. “You believe you may simply banish me from this plane and that my taint shall not last? I have touched this world with evil and it shall forever be part of the souls that inhabit it. Malin, I curse you with sterility, you and your kin shall forever lack the children they need. May your forest halls forever be silent, and your hearts heavy with sadness. Urguan, your greed and lust shall overcome you, you are not worthy of the height God gave you, your descendants shall be short, squalid and ugly. You will always seek to find Gold and Gems in the deep underground of the earth, your hunger never satisfied. Horen, you wish immortality? I will curse you with the opposite, early death for you and your kin. You shall age quickly and die before you experience the fruits of your useless labour. And you Krug, the most hated of The Descendants, you shall always have the lust of war. You are strong? Well, the strength shall be used against your brothers, used to pillage and murder! Your lust for battle shall be unsatisfied and your descendants shall grow ugly and heartless.” As soon as his words were uttered, the world grew suddenly dark. A great roar erupted from Iblees' mouth and in a blast of fire he was banished from the Mortal World.

The Resettlement of Aegis and Rise of the Undead

After a long and prosperous era of peace, Aegis began to settle. The aftermath left the world scarred and deserted. The eventual death of the Four Brothers and their pure, untainted kin was inevitable, and soon, the rise of the cursed kin of the Four Brothers rebuilt the world.

The Humans settled the northern parts of Aegis, choosing to establish a great kingdom, named after their forefathers who died to bring them peace. This was to be named the Great Kingdom of Oren.
The Dwarves, retreating to their caves in search for jewels, founded the Great Kingdom of Kal'Urguan, christened after their father; Urguan.
The Orcs, finding the sands of the east to be ideal to found a nation of battle-hardened brutes, named their Great Kingdom after their father; Krug, officially calling it Krugmar.
And lastly, the forest-dwelling sons of Malin sought tranquility within the growth, founded their Great Princedom of Malinor, named after their own father. Their tranquility, however, was not to last. The descendants of the Four Sons began to quarrel and fight, their respective curses growing into trees of hatred.

Black Scourge

In the beginning, hailing from the far north of the lands of Anthos, strange dark beings appeared. At the beginning, they seemed but corrupted beings, but soon their powers would be discovered to be far more greater than expected. They took their time, but soon shown themselves as servants of their dark lord, the Drakaar Setherien, and once called themselves the Black Scourge.

History

The ‘Black Scourge’, as dubbed by the mortal races, originated beyond the ice wall in the far north of Anthos. Their first victims were the Bohra, boar-like humanoids living north of the wall. They fell into the hands of the powers of the Black Drake, and many were coerced into joining with this new threat to their home. Their skin turned rotten and black and they were made to fight for their new master. Before they were just a native tribe, which fought against the new ‘conquering’ descendants who arrived in Anthos, but they were decimated and destroyed by the Scourge from the north, and the descendants from the south.

In the early 1400s, during the greatest Orenian civil war reportedly to have ever been fought, the Black Scourge first began to seep past the wall containing it. Reports from northern settlements close to the wall indicate mid-war encounters with ghostly, almost angelic beings which would seek to lure children toward the wall. At the time, these were seem as saints coming to aid the needy in wartime. However, In hindsight, it would appear these could have been harbingers using their illusory prowess for malefic purposes. It was in the chaos and weakness after the Teutonic-Blackmont War that the Scourge began to strike more openly, as the nations of the world were incredibly weak. The Elves and Dwarves had been decimated by the Humans, while the humans bled eachother white.

Their first coordinated attack was targeted at Malinor; the Elven nation, where many civilians were taken. The fate and names of most of the kidnapped were never known, except for one human knight who returned decades later. From the Malinor attack, the Scourge’s power grew and grew. Eventually, after testing its defences, they even Sieged the castle of Greywynn, fort of the Teutonic Order’s remnant. Yet even throughout this time, not much was known about this new foe. The Siege of the Wall Castle at Greywynn finally caught the attention of the races of Anthos, and the forces of the mortals united to confront them. The Black Scourge could not hold against such a large invasion, and they were pushed back into the North once more. The Scourge then conjured a tower in the middle of Malinor, causing the Elves to retreat and start a neighboring camp known as New Malinor. Several months after it arose from the ground, however, the elves counterattacked and levelled the tower.

From that point onward, the Black Scourge began acting more carefully. Their attacks were meticulously planned and they became more successful. Many began to die at their hand, and the humans in particular were hit by the brunt. Soon they started to spread their name, leaving survivors and notes. Outside the gates of Luminaire, they performed deals, showing their robed selves. Planned attacks in force were done to Guilds and Cities, the Arcane Delvers having to fight them off more than once. Abresi, the human city, was almost fully destroyed more than once, and Malinor suffered from continuous attacks.

Despite the descendants attempting to escape Setherien to another realm, the attacks carried on even into the Fringe. Finally, after a cohort of brave adventurers gathered all the fragments of the Golden Lance, Setherien was defeated on the 24th of The Deep Cold, 1457. With Setherien defeated, the majority of the Scourge’s remnant quickly disappeared.

Ranks

The true names of the various hierarchical positions of the Black Scourge command structure are unknown. However, the mortal races dubbed them names in their own tongues through which to understand this especially foreign foe.

* The Black Drake, Setherien

Setherien was the deific dragon-god of the Black Scourge. As a Drakaar, an immensely powerful and intelligent Drake, Setherien craved power and and the subjugation of all the mortal races who dwelled in Anthos. Apparently more powerful than others of his kin, Setherien demonstrated remarkable dark magic abilities, including the ability to create demi-god like servants, call forth the skeletal souls of his slain foes from the void and implant a fragment of his corrupting power in malevolent red crystals known as blood shards. There were numerous reports of Setherien being able to manifest himself in humanoid form, appearing as a tall figure with medium length black hair, red eyes and pointed teeth, with his black scales appearing as bony armor plates.

According to the accounts of the Order of the Golden Lance, Setherien has been hunted for nearly a century by that mysterious sect of paladins. Unlike other Drakes and Drakaar they had slain, Setherien has proven to be the most powerful and difficult to kill of them all. The source of Setherien's corruption and his unusual powers are a subject of some debate, with some drawing a daemonic or even Iblanic connection.

* Harbingers

As the brutal demigod-like servants of Setherien, the Harbingers were the only beings in Anthos, aside from birds, capable of flight. They possessed powerful magic which included almost impenetrable visual illusions, and bone freezing fire, known as frostfire, which was even capable of breaking gates and walls. While they can be defeated in battle and forced to retreat, they appear to be immortal, unable to be killed while their master was alive. Their stereotypical appearance in the worst years of the scourge was of a heavily armored icy shadow clutching an ornate metal staff. These were the most commonly seen variants, however few actually preferred to use corrupted melee weapons to a deadly effect. While they were initially enthralled to Setherien, each Harbinger had its own personality which only strengthened as their master’s domination over them weakened. Some actually survived the end of the Black Scourge, but it is believed they are all destroyed in the modern day.

* Followers/Cultists

Those who believed and followed the will of the Black drake but that do not receive its magical powers, are fully dependent on their own physical strength and mental aptitude. While some do have other magics, they are not the magics which the Dark Lord provides. Those mortals who served Setherien’s cause are generally said to have been psychopaths and hungry for power. Others seemed to relish in pain and misery. Interestingly, some reports in the Orenian archives mentioned cultists attempting to justify their actions as being for some greater good - whether this is a simple delusion or otherwise remains to be seen.

There were numerous accounts of apparent defections from the ranks of the cultists, the most notable of which being the assassination of the Harbinger Kav'zoras by the prominent cult leader known as The Judge. Following a series of desertions and defections from first generation of cultists, the Scourge have apparently made blood-shard corruption mandatory. This bound the worshippers of Setherien to his will and removed their free will almost completely. While most former cultists, the Judge included, choose to fade into hiding and obscurity following their defection - others take a more active role in the fight against Setherien. Rumors persisted of at least one former cultist making up part of the Scions of the Third Era command structure.

* Minions and Servants

Withered skeletons of fallen soldiers and corrupted Bohra. They serve as the army of Setherien, able to be brought to battle by the Harbingers through rifts. Most have no minds, yet some chosen ones do.

Scourge Creatures

* The Skeleton Commander

Of the minions brought forth by the magic of the Black Scourge, the Skeleton commander is one of their leaders. Wearing armor made out of Gold and using a sword made of the same material, he moves throughout the battlefield shouting orders.

* The Gorloth

A towering construct of stone. Its master is unknown, but clearly a member of the Black Scourge. Its power is great, wrecking all that comes in its way. A creature that never disobeys any orders, and that has to power to destroy even those in the best of armors.

* Spectre of Souls

A frightening existence, created when over 100 souls of the deceased came together in torment and grief to create a powerful spectre creature. Released in the world of Anthos, it was summoned by a twisted ritual in the Northern lands. A battle of power was created between a Harbinger and the apparition, the result being the corruption of the creature. It was then tasked to defend the northern lands and is called upon to wreak havoc upon mortals.

* Mimir

A ghost like being seemed to join the Scourge at one point. It appeared indestructible and immortal, with black cloths floating and without a body. Yet it was soon captured and uncorrupted, it appeared to have been Heial, the sentient enderpearl.

* Vithquar

Vithquar is a being that appeared to be a creature of the Nether. Woman, wearing black armor over light blue skin, possessing black wings, a tail, and horns. While incredibly corrupted, the being appeared to have the mind of a child, yet angry and demonic. It didn't appear to have any particular strengths, perhaps a bit stronger physically than other elves, but easily as killable as any other. A being created by some of the the Judge and other followers of Setherien, now works under her creators. She was then expelled from the Scourge for horrible work.

* Malghourn

The Stone Serpent, a great force that flies through the northern lands. A powerful dragon he once was, until the Dark Lord Setherien tainted him, and made him become what he is today. A slave to Setherien's will, this Drake is a great power in the Scourge disposal.

Events and Attacks

Siege of Greywynn

The Hochmiester of the Teutonic Order, Jonathan Black, was filled with dread and despair. An abyss of darkened clouds had hovered over The North for days, and he knew his lands were in the calm before the storm; and it came. In a final reckoning of lose of hope, the Hockmiester burned down the supports inside Castle Greywynn, rendering the structure unstable and forced it to collapse, all in effort of ruining the prize of the inevitable invasion. With the destruction of their late keep in self-sabotage, the hardened Teutonic Order were overwhelmed with they expected - a descent of The North. In a sudden crackling roar of lightning and shattering quakes, deep maroon tendrils of rigid and horned flesh erupted all about the gate to The North. Lava bubbled out from large crevices opened in the skin of the great structure, ebbing forth a smokescreen of crippling chill. Fire borne of frost leaked out into the land, the massive tentacles springing up all about the plate, rupturing into walls and even within the keep's ruins. Helpless, the defenders receded from their beloved stronghold, and the enemy were at Anthos doorstep.

The Taking of Kal’Azgoth

How they came inside the city, no one knows. Their attack started in the fort of Storms Crossing but they moved and entered Kal’Azgoth. It was a surprise to the Dwarves, they did not foresee that the Black Scourge could pass the gates. They were defeated, and their king, Thorik, was encased in ice on his throne. The remaining dwarves united and decided to fight back and retake their capital. The battle started on the great gates, and followed up for many hours. The powers of the Black Scourge keeping them away with Wither Skeletons and Cold Blue fireballs. The attacks took long, but with help of humans and orcs, the dwarves were capable of retaking their capital and save their king.

The Deal with the Elves of Malinor

An evil deal tried to be done with the Elves of Malinor. The deal was simple, the elves would have to give the Black Scourge an elf every elven week, or a head would be given to Malinor every elven day. The elves did not care about such deal, and carried on with their lives. The Dark Scourge did not forget, and the heads started appearing each elven day. When one did not appear, two others would appear the next elven day. And when a week passed without any head being found, then a collections of heads would be found soon enough. The elves tried for a while to accept the deal, by offering criminals. But the criminals fought back and died before they could be taken to the north. And so the deal continued, with many elves having been killed because of it. The Black Scourge had enough and invited the elven council for a last negotiation to reach peace, yet the elven council brought attackers. The result was the death of all attackers and the promise that the end of Malinor would come. In the following elven week it so happened, with a powerful corruption coming onto the city of Luminaire, destroying and killing every plant life around.

The Burning of Lenniel

A planned attack of the town of Lenniel. While some kept a close eye on the Delver base, the others started the destruction on the town. The houses were all wood, and the magic that those that attacked had helped greatly. A creature that appeared to be a Golem was seen performing the commands of others, and to burn the houses. Besides the magic of the Black Scourge, books, plants and farmed goods were used to start the fires inside the houses by torches. Many innocent bystanders were around, and all but perished in the attack. The town of Luminaire started to hear of the attack and some were sent to investigate. Of those, High Princess Titania Hawksong went, and there was testimony of her death, yet her body never found. The attack ended with a charge at the Delver’s fort, but the fort was far too defended and the charge did nothing.

The Attack on Haelun’or

The Mali’Aheral of Haelun’or were caught off guard by noises from the main gate. Some went to investigate, and what they found was an army. The gate was quickly destroyed by the strongest of the Black Scourge, and their army entered the Town. The High elves escaped into their library, and most of the attackers followed inside. The library was a maze, that even the Mali’Aheral did not know how to navigate in. While most were lost inside it, others stayed out of the library and started the corruption of town. Many towers were destroyed, their lake frozen solid with a bloodshard left hovering above, and most of the flowers throughout their town destroyed. Why this last deed was done, no one knows, perhaps one of the members of the Black Scourge had a great anger for flowers. The maze was the salvation of the Elves, as they were able to exit the library with the attackers lost inside still. They went and seeked help from Malinor, where they prepared a force to drive the corrupted creatures out of their city. When they returned in force, many of the Black Scourge had already left, and only a few remained. Even with just a few, the battle took some time, and the city left mostly frozen.

The Destruction of Abresi

A grand scale attack at the human capital of Abresi. The city being quite huge, meant that the Black Scourge was able to infiltrate it quite easily, and their first target was the palace. Weaker minions were made to attack the gates, and draw the guarding forces there, all this while the palace was attacked. The Humans noticed the attack too late, and the palace taken over and frozen solid. Their princess was taken and left to live after tortured for weeks. While many other small attacks were made on Abresi, the next full scale was done at the docks. In this attack the Black Scourge froze the sea and destroyed most of the naval capabilities of Abresi. While some humans simple talked about it as help, because they wished to demolish the docks, it was proof that the Black Scourge had immense power.

The Raid of Gronkkston.

It was the time of the grand tournament of Anthos, to find the stronger fighters of the Realm. In the Orcish town of Gronkkston, the tournament progressed, until the attention of all those present was turned to a few members of the Black Scourge that appeared. With almost no fighter left in the arena, a great ice tomb was created around the Orc Rex, Gronkk. A shadowed figure appeared inside it as well. The ice turned black, and what happened inside the tomb was not known, but shouts of the Rex could be heard coming from inside. Only after the small number of the Black Scourge were defeated did the warriors returned to the arena, so see the tomb. Not much longer and the tomb was destroyed, and inside it, was no one. A rift opened in the arena, and many Wither Skeletons started pouring out to fight those there. The battle took many hours and created many injured until the forces of the Black Scourge stopped.

The Freezing of Brom'ka

A surprise attack at the Adunian town of Brom'ka, just south of the Temple. The Black Scourge members gathered at night time, preparing themselves for the fights to come. At dawn, they advanced into town, an ice bridge created throught the river leading inside, they were not expected. The Adunians could do nothing to stop their advance, most still asleep in their houses. Their bridge was destroyed, part of the farms frozen, and many were falling to the dark forces. Some were taken alive, others were killed without mercy, and the fight lasted throughout the day. At least three of the Dark Lieutenents were seen in town, their powers creating large amount of destruction, and any who would dare face them head on, find themselves with their lives lost. A creature of death, which had been seen on attacks before, the Skeleton Commander, walked through town with the other warriors, attacking all that came in front of it. When finaly the Black Scourge forces left,the town was found mostly frozen, houses and towers covered in ice, and most of the river. Once more had the forces of the Dark Lord shown their power.

The Assault at the Equinox Grove

A large group of the now empowered Black Scourge travelled through Malinor until they reached the shores of Malinor, looking to the island that is the Equinox Grove. The powerful Dark Lieutenents froze the water allowing the armored forces to make their way onto the island. No sentient beings were on the island, many animals made their escape as the island was assaulted. Trees were frozen, chests destroyed, information collected. The Scourge prepared to defend the Grove as their presence gathered great dark cloud around the island. The armies to retake the island came, but the dark followers were prepared, they defended with success. After the armies were frozen and defeated, and after all that was needed was performed on the island, the Black Scourge returned to the North, with a prize, the leader of the Delvers, Nienna Calm, had been captured. The island stayed without the Black Scourge present, yet their dark magic prevailed in it. Many spiders started to appear, and soon the island was covered in many cobwebs. When the Elves changed their living locations due to the corruption of Malinor, did they finally notice the large Bloodshard floating above the island. First they tried to advance but were stopped by an army of spiders. Negotiations between a Dark Lieutenent and the druids were performed but the druids or the elves ignored them. The elves stormed the island once more, this time prepared and with mages present. They defended for 3 days, and on the fourth the Wizard Blundermore prepared to remove the Bloodshard. Yet unknown to them, was that a traitor was within the ranks of the attacking army. As Blundermore was concentrating on the magic, the traitor struck, and killed the wizard. The traitor was quickly killed as well, but the harm was done. Without the Wizard, the Tree Lord Healphon took charge on removing the Bloodshard, but he was not with knowledge of how to. He attempted to destroy it with powerful magic blows, and he succeeded, with great consequences. The shard's corrupting energy was no longer contained, and with a great explosion, it destroyed most of the island. Was it a success or a defeat of the elven side, each has its own thoughts on it.

The Attacks Towards Herendul

Being so close to the northern wall has made the lives of the people of Herendul quite hard, as they sometimes sent scouts to look in the far north leaving only a few to survive the bitter cold or to defend its nation. Attacks and raids by the Black Scourge are great in number. The Herendul army tries to fight back, but would only face a few victories yet the more they faced the Northen beasts they had their defeats. Throughout the attacks, the Black Scourge was able to two great feats, the destruction of the Herendul's church, and the capturing of the Wintermont keep.

The Snowfall of Lenfarthing

In a cold night, in the city of Lenfarthing, home of the halflings, the black mist came. This day, to go against the weak forces of the halflings, five Harbingers appeared. The halflings could do nothing. They entered their boats and moved away from their home, as a big bloodshard started to freeze the lake. A fast attack, with no hope of defense. But the mortals were only caught off-guard. They united and created an army to take the lands back from the Scourge. Like the Scourge did before, they attacked fast, and were able to push the Harbingers away from that land and back to the North.

The Fall of the Cloud Temple

A devastating attack at the Cloud Temple by the Harbingers resulted in it's fall. Read more about the fall of the Cloud Temple of Anthos. Afterwards in the lands of the former cloud temple, all trees withered. The once river of clear water turned to lava, and a gigantic floating fort moved over the land, chained down. A mine was constructed, weird farms made. The library was protected and slightly changed, but the temple building was turned into a prison. Those that got into it, could not leave. What the Black Scourge does in that area is unknown. In the mines the Servants of Setherien worked day after day, removing stone and minerals from it. The minerals thought, were thrown away into the lava that now flowed through the rivers. They were not after stone or minerals in those mines.

The Aid to the Dwarves

A battle between the two races of humans and dwarves started. The first battle was in Thoringuard, a fort near the new Cloud Temple. The dwarves knew they were outnumbered, and the Harbingers took their chance. They came to the dwarves and offered assistance, the dwarves somewhat agreed to it. Yet the help of the Harbingers was also their falling, as the information of dwarves allying themselves with the Northen beasts was leaked. The information reached the Elves, the orcs, and many guilds which were made to combat the scourge also heard of it. They all united to fight the dwarves in that grand battle. The fight lasted hours, the powers of the Harbingers killing many attackers while protected by the walls of the Dwarves. Once the walls fell, the Harbinger's defenses were removed, and it was the end of the battle with the defeat of the dwarves. Even with a defeat, it took almost all the warriors of the lands, with exception of the dwarven ones, to enter a temporary fort. Many men of all races lost their lives in that battle, but the question remains... why did the Harbingers aid the dwarves?

The Alliance of the Cold

There was a time where the Black Scourge and the forces under Ondnarch, an Aengul enemy of the dwarves, started aiding eachother. The attacks of the combined forces were devastating, making those of the Conclave of Malin have extreme dificulties in fighting off the group, and Lenniel to be removed of all residents for a short amount of time. In Lenniel the central building was corrupting for a while, turned into a temple to Setherien. It didn't last long, soon the building was removed of corruption and returned to normal. The allience between the two forces also did not last long for reasons unknown. If they had fully combined their powers, they would possibly be unstoppable, even to the combined forces of all others.

The Retaking of the Lost Sanctuary

From the old lands of the Cloud Temple, the Scourge started expanding it's territory. A town was fully burnt to the ground, and most buildings around destroyed. The people of Anthos finally started to fight back in force. The Scions of the third age, a group created specially to fight off the Scourge, started planning an assault to retake the lands of the old Temple. While this happened the Scourge continued to corrupt land and change the former Temple grounds to their liking. The mine was built, servants placed to work there. It became the meeting place of the cultists as well. The groups continued to prepare for the battle to come. After constant attacks on Oren, it too came to aid the group, and an army created fast. The battle was to start. A small camp created, and near the Temple there was a town which was used to contruct siege equipment. The battle happened for many hours, the Scourge falling back, but taking many mortal lives with them. In the end, the Scourge were defeated, the floating fortress moving away from those lands. The groups could finally check what was inside the mine. The Servants digged down, before creating a tunnel which lead to some old ruins. Inside them, there was the Door or Eternity.

The Pursuit of the Lost Throne

A small party of Cultists led by three Harbingers led an attack on the Azog Fort in hopes of finding the lost Setherien throne. They felt an immense power from inside the fort, the throne’s bloodshards calling for their seekers. Upon reaching the Azog gate the Harbingers were shot at on sight by scouts on the walls and quickly retaliated against them. The Harbingers made quick work of the weak guards and blasted through gates and doors blocking their paths with their powerful frostfire magic. Upon reaching the Fort’s center, they heard scuffling beneath the ground around them and could feel the power of the throne’s aura below. But before they could reach the cellar of the fort, a feeling of distress and failure washed over them as they realized something went terribly wrong. The remaining Azog’s lifted the throne and tossed it into a large pool of molten lava, incinerating it before the Harbingers could reach them. Humans surrounded the outside of the Azog fort and prepared to attack the Harbingers. Many of the cultists stood guard and protected the Harbingers as they fled from the fort, still in disbelief of the destruction of the throne.

Conquest of the Northern Arch

With the victory over the Old Sanctuary Grounds, the mortals felt far more confidant. The alliance of the mortal races took their eyes onto the North now, more precisely the entrance to the northern mountains, protected by Scourge walls. They prepared their armies, and their siege engineers, and marched north. A battle was started, once more the battle between mortals and Servants happened for hours as the Trebuchets launched their rocks onto the walls, trying to open a path. While some attacked the walls directly through the front, another group of mortals went to flank, finding a way around the tall mountain walls or through them. From behind and from the front the Harbingners were attacked. Slowly the mortals fell, yet with little losses, they had learnt from the battle before. This is until he came. A massive dark dragon flew over the mountains, and went down towards the army of mortals. Setherien had come to destroy and kill many of the mortals. While Setherien stayed in the battlefield, the losses of the mortals were great, and none of their attacks would seem to even damage him. Finally a stone of the Siege weapons crashed into the gates, opening a way for the mortals to pass, now surrounding the Harbingers who were unprotected. Setherien flew to destroy the Siege equipment, but it was too late, most of the Harbingers had been defeated. Setherien, after killing more and more mortals, finally decided to leave, his reasons as to why he left unknown, as he appeared unhurt. Without their leader and their forces down, soon the remaining Harbingers fell as well. The mortal forces had removed the Scourge from the entrance of the north.

The Solace Spire

A gigantic Spire appeared in the lands of the Snow elves in old Kastoria. The Snow elves had no idea what it was, but soon it became apparent that is belonged to one of the Harbingers. The battle of Shi's spire was the culminating battle of the war against the snow elves of the Dwarven lands. Having lived under the oppressive eye of Loche "Orokana" Shi for such a long while, the snow elves decided to launch a final assault to determine, once and for all, who owned their lands. The Snow Elves, Humans, Dwarves, and Orcs gathered together at a keep opposite of Shi's tower, and began their assault. The fight was going evenly for about half the battle, until the Harbinger Vak'thuul unleashed the newest weapon of the Scourge... the Prophet. This new weapon weakened the lines of the attacking forces, and the Harbingers (Kahzo's name evades me) and Shae'tan launched a counterattack, fully destroying the opposing forces. Within hours, the land of the snow elves was completely corrupted, and the snow elven people had retreated to a bunker beneath the earth.

The Mining Manor

The Scourge had set it's eyes on the town of Leanniel for quite some time. Constant attacks were made until the Scourge decided to take something permanently. The manor on top of hill in that town. It belonged to those that fought with holy powers and against the scourge. Their attack was relentless, the defenders destroyed. For a few seeds the Harbingers changed the manor, to turn it into a mining facility. There, they brought slaves to mine and gather minerals for their wars to come. From atop of the town, they started their attacks on Leanniel, and started corrupting the lands. The Druids that resided in the town were the main force that tried to stop the Scourge, able to do so in a large battle, with the aid of other guilds and groups. The town and manor had been retaken after a long time of fighting.

The Escape from Anthos

A new land would be discovered by the descendants, known to most as the Fringe, a peculiar land seeming near ancient as Anthos itself, with a sprawling temple of marble with a peculiar obsidian portal, seeming much like the ones once used in Aegis by the Undead around roughly a century ago. The descendants were quick to flee to the new land, their Black Sourge aggressors pushing them into fright to escape free from the seemingly curse ridden Anthos in an attempt to find peace; only to have been followed once more by the antagonizing scourge. As wars plunged the descendant races into conflict in the new lands, Anthos began to have increased weather changes, to a near constant pouring of rain, and many floods. Until finally, another conflict broke out between the descendants: The battle of the old cloud temple mines, and the land surrounding it, where a great flood would finally engulf Anthos, ending the extended stay on the continent, and forcing many Elves, men, Orcs, Dwarves, and even Kharajyr to flee back to the Fringe in fright.

List of Notorious Evil Characters

Characters of Renown

People know for their guile and cleverness, or even stalwart brutality; these figures in history are remembered for their foggy backgrounds and the nature of darker things they have imposed on the realm.

Alive

Archwraith Nimdravur - Nimdravur acted as leader of the first Iblees cult to exist in 200 years, ruling within a keep he slaved over by hand, hidden under the ruse of a knighthood that would nearly come to national power. He was High Inquisitor of the Eventide Dominion and acted as the holy Sakras of the Jester-ruled Teutonic Order. His knighthood pledged itself to a rebellious Horen queen that sought to seize the throne of Oren. He became a Wraith during one short period of his life, in which he dedicated himself to scourge eradication. As one of the first Wraiths to ever be created, he held the title of Archwraith, before bestowing it upon Vinzakra in his absence.

The Boogie Man - A twisted being, who is obsessed with puppets and turned himself into one. Mostly known to be a weird, annoying creature who is one of the first Soul Puppeteers to bring the Dark Art into it's current state of fear. Being the Founder of the Apparition Ritual, he summoned the Spectral Beings throughout the realms to cause great pain into the minds of citizens and was responsible for the destruction of Luminaire in Anthos.

Evark Evocress - The unearthed elf's history can be traced back to not just the beginning of Aegis, though, with the first tribes of elves assisting the three brothers band together and forming the great nations known today. Evark Evocress, corrupted by the Al'khazar king's greed, tore the elf apart through the repossession of his prized possessions and loved ones. Envy and lust grew in the elf's mind; from having everything stripped from him, he wanted to fight back; however, with no weapons in hand, the elf began to practice more malarious arts of the void, taking insight from Availer. The art of fire evocation was created at that moment, and thus Evark Evocress used its potential in great chaos, burning that which wronged him; however, they did not satiate his lust. Eventually, the gain of power grew, and so did the mastery of his art; joining the recently founded Mages Guild with Ambros alongside him. However, the elf soon learned betrayal with his brethren when he stabbed in the back, killing the elf for a quick coin offered by assassins against the guild. Death was, however, not granted for the elf, for Archmage Cataris of the undead Legion gave the bane of lichdom, twisting the mind further of the elf to be kept in a phylactery at his new master's side. Despite the elf's life complete, cursed to live on, and so it did, defending against pillagers and riots that attacked him only made the lich more emotionless and careless of the lives around it. Eventually, from the cost of lives of many, Evark Evocress found the key he was searching for, the reversal of his curse. The elf would soon complete the ritual and find himself within a new gifted body, free from the debilitations that previously afflicted them, a new life, a new beginning. The hardship endured by the elf as many remembered the past dealings with the lich pushing ideals and memories they would wish to forget and putting a harrowing on the elves' new life trying to be something he was not in the past life. Forgoing combat and magic that follows, Evark Evocress took a new name Evo'lur Tartarus so that he may start a new life as an artificer and repent for the sins of his past, with whatever pain it caused.

Jester/Gravelord Vinzakra - A bandit and serial killer in his early life, this sociopathic High Elf has since taken up the use of many magical arts, most notably Necromancy. Through a transformation he has since become a Wraith, taking the title Gravelord of Punishment, dubbed "Gravelord Vinzakra." Once a leader of the Necromancer's Coven, he has since become Archwraith, at the request of Nimdravur, the previous Archwraith.

Knox - Knox is the pumpkin-wearing, blood-crazed cannibal maniac that has terrorized the mortal realm since the start of his dark reign in Asulon. His gruesome murders and gory dealings are known throughout the world as the bloodiest and most horrific.

Lucas Black - Known for his merciless mass-murders of many towns whilst working with The Undead. He was almost forced to become one of The Undead when his true intents were revealed that he was working against The Undead and selling information to nation leaders to try and ensure The Undead lost. No nation leader with this knowledge still lives, nor spread it, so it is widely accepted he was simply an unstable and temperamental psychopath, when in truth he's an exceptionally clever sociopath. He is also known for being a prominent figure in many dark groups and starting several wars during the time of Asulon before promptly vanishing for over a hundred and fifty years without making many goodbyes. He has reappeared near the end of Anthos, rather suddenly turning several battles against The Harbingers. Many view his return as an omen of darkness, whether it be he bringing it or simply arriving in response to it, and they would be right to think so with the rise of Iblees now present.

The Perfectionist - Never given this name outright, Naruntah'Jynx is the once muted mime, known widely for its egregious slayings and utterly manic maiming of itself and others. Now it takes the title of Gravelord Chrodraoes, the master of the Coven.

Dralazar - He murders people a lot.

The Warlock - A manipulative figure hidden behind a veil of shadows and a myriad of disguises, The Warlock is said to have a substantial grasp on politics as well as acting a voice of reason among Dark Magi. Rumored to have succeeded Kknotos and enacted his will until Ikuras no longer required it, there are none who have vexed this man and lived to tell the tale.

Mili "The Skull" Irongut - Mili ‘The Skull’ Irongut was once a regular dwarf of the Irongut Clan, hailing from the Grand Kingdom of Urguan. He was known for having later betrayed his kin, digging a tunnel for House Flay’s bannermen to enter Mount Ire and slaughter the dwarven inhabitants within. He later became the House Engineer, a master of traps and redstone wiring.

Guraim - A possibly mentally disabled Dwarf bandit who worked first with The Undead, but on many occasions was assigned a task that was simply not possible for him to complete. After becoming annoyed with them, he violently slew a number of The Undead and moved onto just casual banditry. He came to take on many mercenary jobs only to botch those up incredibly, but somehow came out with even more pay. Guraim mysteriously vanished after slaughtering the entire population of Alras in Asulon, his whereabouts and end unknown.

Augustus Flay - A bandit from Aegis who went by the name 'Prince'. One of the two King of Bandits, Lucas Black refused to accept the title publicly and nominated Prince so he could remain anonymous. He founded the most powerful bandit group in Asulon known as The Hallowed Mountain Bandits that would destroy all others, later accepting an offer from Godfrey to become a noble House under him. He later led 'The Flays' to become a figure of terror for all in Asulon. Even now, the mention of 'Flays' is one to be feared.

Kknotos - The founder of the key of Ikuras. He devoted himself to revive his beloved wife, by those means he freed the Great Spirit Ikuras, though his wife was not next to him, all he found was his doom. Though, the Great Spirit found it fit to bring him back into the realm of Athera, now only to reap havoc on the descendants.

Mayctor - Dreadlord of the Undead, Mayctor earned a reputation for his kidnapping and torture of many famous citizens, such as Bell. His life came to an end, however, when he famously attacked Dawns Bakery in Al'khazar with fireballs, destroying much of it while setting many patrons of the Bakery ablaze.

Kane - A very well-known bandit. Kane prowled the Kings Road in Aegis day and night, earning the respect and admiration of fellow bandits, and the fear of more upstanding members of society. He at times slipped by undetected simply by wearing a pumpkin, but he met his end in Aegis via execution in Galahar.

Wrath - Wrath was one of the long-time and most well-known leaders of The Caravan, also known as one of the major bandit group that terrorized Aegis and Asulon. From his various bases, always called Wrath's Clutch, full-on wars were held between The Descendants and The Caravan. After selling his soul to Iblees and contributing heavily to the seemingly unending attacks of their kind against the descendant realms, taking hostage many lives into the cult itself, he eventually lost his life in the wars waged shortly before that world was destroyed.

Brunhylde Volsung - Founder and first Frost Mother of the Asulonian Coven of Frost Witches, historically her coven - known as the Frostborn Coven - is also the largest recorded group of frost witches to exist under one Frost Mother. Her influence over the war cleric, Areon Baldwin, became known to the infamous Order of the White Rose. These scandalous relations would eventually lead to a divide within the clerical schools of magic, where those of Baldwin's order were effectively hunted and assaulted by Oren's soldiers. One member of her coven was also know as the 'Mistress' of the Frozen Thorns, an underground organization responsible for several murders predominately in Oren's territory. Though long deceased, her cold touch can still be felt amongst the Descendant races as her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters continue in her legacy.

Rilath - The original poor soul to be tainted by Iblees for the use of the shades. All current shades descend from him, in some form or way. He has been involved in many dark activities, wreaking mayhem throughout multiple lands.

The Butcher Boys - Found and led by the Gambino Crime family, the butcher boys became a terrorizing gang in Oren, primarily Felsen. Widely regarded as one of the most richest and infamous gangs in history, controlling the city’s commerce and law by illegal means. This subversive syndicate eventually influenced politics by committing political assassinations of mayors, bribing the monarchy, blackmailing the judiciary, and extorting the city’s politicians for their anarchic and profiting agenda.
