The Mendez-Gonzalez feud was an ongoing internal conflict between two influential families of the Kingdom of Hyspia. This feud was initiated by Juan Mendez and Pedro Gonzalez when insults were traded during a yearly Citizen's Council in 1791 within the capital. This lead to the downward spiral of theft, burglary, and slaughter of cattle committed by both families throughout the feud. The first phase of the feud ended with the infamous Sunset Duel which was fought between Pedro and Juan with the King's approval as the sun's light went dim.

First Hostilities

First hostilities began between the two families after an exchange of insults between the head of the Mendez and Gonzalez families. This led to a vocal confrontation after the meeting, which was swiftly put to an end by King Cesar himself. A week later, Juan would accuse Pedro of breaking and entering his home, chasing the man around with a sword. King Cesar would again have to step in to stop the violence before it turned bloody, ordering Juan and Pedro to remain on opposite sides of Tierre Natal. He had hoped this separation would help to cease hostilities, but it would only increase them. Pedro would go on to accuse Juan of destroying parts of his property, which would again almost lead to a violent confrontation between the two men and their families.

Cattle slaughter and Burglary

Around the year 1793, the Mendez family were again accused of a crime by the Gonzalez family, this time being burglary. Juan denied these claims, stating that it was the Gonzalez family that had robbed him in his sleep as well as hurling rocks through his Window. After an investigation of both houses, it was found that there was a rock thrown through the window of the Mendez family home, but there was no evidence of the Mendez family committing burglary against the Gonzalez family. Later in the year, one of the Mendez cows would go missing. Juan Mendez immediately accused Pedro Gonzalez of stealing the cow, but Pedro refused this. Juan almost drew his sword on Pedro, but doing so would be dishonorable as Pedro possessed no weaponry. After beginning his own investigation, Juan found blood stains leading into the Gonzalez house. This was more than enough proof for the Mendez that Gonzalez was guilty of the accused crime, and attempted to arrest him using his position as Head Steward. Pedro petitioned the King for protection, and the King made his own decision on the matter.

The Faithful Duels

Citing their warrior culture, King Cesar demanded that in order to solve the feud turned violent that there would be a Trial by Combat between the two men. As Pedro was a citizen with no armor or arms, he was supplied by the Kingdom while Juan supplied his own. King Cesar had explicitly stated that this was to knockout, and as such dulled swords were used. The Duel lasted for around thirty seconds, as the military experienced Juan Mendez outmatched the inexperienced Pedro Gonzalez. By Hyspian law, the Feud had been solved, however this was not to last. Juan again challenged Pedro to a duel, this time to the Death.

The Sunset Duel

The Sunset Duel is one of the most infamous duels in Hyspian history, as it is the only time an unexperienced civilian had defeated a battle-hardened and war loving soldier in a fair match. The pair met on the evening of the 14th of the deep cold outside the gates of Tierre Natal. The pair began the fight as the King and a small entourage of spectators watched. The duel lasted for five minutes, both continuously wearing each other down with constant blows to each others armor. The upper hand would shift to Pedro only after he ripped off Juan's shield and stabbed him through an opening in his neck. Juan fell to the floor and died in less than a minute, and Pedro was allowed to return to his home in the Capital.

Conclusion

Eventually Carlos Mendez and Peralien Mirthsense hunt down Pedro and slay him in the hills behind Osanora
