The Kingdom of Hyspia (Common: Kingdom of Hyspia; Hyspanic: Reino de Hyspia), or simply Hyspia is a farfolk nation that was founded in the year 1792 by Cesar I of Hyspia. Its current capital is the city of Osanora. The Kingdom was dissolved in 27 S.A and instead formed the Archduchy of Hyspia.

The people of Hyspia first came together into one collective nation at the formation of the Barony of Hyspia, which was founded and led by Cesar I of Hyspia around the year 1790. Two short years later, Cesar I would go on to declare the reformation of the Barony into the Kingdom of Hyspia. Hyspia remained as an independent nation for five years until it was absorbed into Osanora, until it again gained political independence after leaving for the lands of Norland due to being exiled by Osanora for religious reasons.

King Cesar of House Rivera (r. 1790-1795)

The first undisputed ruler of the Hyspian People, Cesar the First had led the tribe across the northern mountains and into the Wildlands. There, He led them to the very middle of the Wildlands, where he ordered that the Hyspian people begin removing trees and clearing the land in order to build a City for the Hyspians to finally settle down in, which he named Tierre Natal to signify that the Hyspians would move no longer. He also ordered the construction of the wall around the city to protect from raiders after being forced to organize small defenses against constant raids. He was later killed by Pedro Gonzalez in an assassination.

Along with the Protection wall, Cesar also ordered the formation of the Hyspian Militia, which was the predecessor of the later Hyspian Monarchist Army. With the completion of the wall, Cesar issued the largely popular yet controversial 'Declaration of Hyspian Nationalism' which declared the Barony would reform as the Kingdom of Hyspia, cementing its spot in History as one of the few Wildland nations to follow through with settlement rather than abandon the Wildlands for Mainland prospects.

Along with the Declaration, Cesar also declared the reformation of the Hyspian Militia into the Hyspian Monarchist Army, meaning it was to go through several structural reforms. He would then begin establishing diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of Norland. Another big key event in Cesar's reign would be the Mendez-Gonzalez feud which was started between Hand of the Crown Juan Mendez and Pedro Gonzalez. The Hand of the Crown would be killed in the final duel, causing controversy within the Kingdom.

King Cesar I would meet his early end by the hand of Pedro Gonzalez, who killed him in a temporary madness. Cesar sustained a blow from an axe to the chest, which killed the King almost instantly. With the King's sudden and unexpected death, Hernan Vlastos was declared Lord-Regent of the realm until the King's young son Antonio was to come of age. Hernan Vlastos went on to begin a nation-wide manhunt for Pedro.

The Hyspian-Bandit War

After the establishment of the Hyspian Monarchist Army, Cesar I commanded them to begin waging war against the smaller bandit groups within the region. The goal of this was to bring stability and peace to the region and to cement Hyspia as a regional power in the Wildlands. As there was no specific target group, the "war" consisted of minor skirmishes fought between small groups of outlaws and the Hyspian Monarchist Army. Though by common standards the War was nothing more than a minor conflict, casualties were sustained in the few hundreds.

While the war was rumored to not be of massive importance to the overall political structure of Arcas, there were still several key battles such as the Battle outside Tierre Natal, the Raid on Tierre Natal, and the Hyspian Expedition

Negotiations with Norland

Around 1793, the first proper diplomatic meeting between Hyspia and another human nation would be with the Kingdom of Norland, which had agreed to meet with the young King Cesar. After introductions between King Cesar and Norland's King Halvar, discussions about the current diplomatic standings began.

By the end of the meeting, the two Kingdoms had come away with a Non-aggression pact, formal recognition of sovereignty, and an Anti-Bandit pact. The two Kings also unofficially extended an offer to one another that should one be forced out of their land, the other shall give them shelter. This meeting cemented Hyspia as a recognized Nation within Arcas.

King Antonio of House Rivera (R. 1795-14 SA)

Antonio inherited his father's throne after Cesar I's death. Immediately after, his Lord-Regent Hernan Vlastos declared a nation-wide manhunt for the man who killed his Father, Pedro Gonzalez. While the infamous Pedro was captured, he was soon after freed by the same man who imprisoned him. The young King was immediately secured by Hernan and sent Antonio to his sister to keep him temporarily hidden and protected until the situation came under control once more.

After increased negotiations between the Lord-Regent and a Baron of Sutica named Antonio De Medina, Lord Hernan agreed to yield the independence of the nation in order to successfully escape Arcas as it's destruction began and tore Tierre Natal apart. Hernan and Antonio de Medina built up a joint Osanora-Hyspian fleet with supplies from Sutica and were able to evacuate survivors from Hyspia and Osanora. There, they sailed across the sea to Almaris. After this point, Hyspia ceased to be an independent nation and became a landless vassal-state of Osanora. Many years later, after Antonio turned 8, he was returned to Osanora from Norland by citizens of Hyspia who stole him away from Norland. They brought him back, and began teaching him how to rule the Hyspian people. It is also within the same year that Antonio would face his first ever assassination attempt.

Tensions with Osanora

Despite initial cooperation, the majority of Hyspian citizens disliked being ruled by the Baron of Osanora, who was not a native Hyspian. Soon, Hyspian culture was found oppressed by the Osanoran baron and many of the Baron's forces (who were dominantly Hyspian) remained unpaid. Many turned to Prince Antonio to lead them, despite the boy's very young age. With the help of his advisors, he managed to gain the help of the Canonist church, and the Haeseni House of Barclay.

Antonio and his Advisors cited religious misdoings and cultural oppression. The reason for the supposed Religious Misdoings alligation was due to the fact that the Osanoran appointed Diocese of the town had began what he called 'Reformed Canonism'. The Canonist church sent a Cardinal, and House Barclay sent a majority of its family to help the Hyspians. They then brought their case to the Sutican trade king, Mika. After a rather long meeting, Mika resorted to telling the Hyspians to meet with Osanoran leadership. The official meeting has yet to be in session.

First Assassination Attempt

A mere few months after Antonio had returned to Osanora, he was already the victim of an assassination plot. When the Prince was out on a walk to a nearby pond, the infamous Pedro Gonzalez and a Hyspian from the Altamirano family. While the Prince was playing in the water, Pedro and his accomplice came up behind the prince and stabbed him four times in the back. As he was not far from Osanora, Antonio's cries of pain were heard by Carlos Mendez who rushed over with his Spouse, Peralien.

Carlos engaged in a duel with Pedro and his accomplice, as Peralien dragged the prince out of the water and laid him on his back. After ensuring the Prince was still alive, she sprinted over with a short sword and chased off her former lover, Pedro. While Carlos dispatched Pedro's accomplice, Pedro made a run for the mountains. Peralien and Carlos pursued him, with Peralien eventually tackling and stabbing him with her short-sword. Believing Pedro to be dead, they rushed back to Antonio and rushed him to the clinic in Sutica. Luckily, with the help of Sutican Paladins, Antonio's wounds were healed. He was then escorted home to Osanora where he would be put under heavy guard by his Regent Carlos.

Hyspian Exile from Osanora

After continued workings with the church and the formation of the Bishopric of Hyspia, the Osanoran Baron decided to exile the entirety of Hyspian citizenship from his lands. Because of this, Antonio immediately reached out to his Father's Norlandic contacts. This consisted of a letter to the former King of Norland, Caedric I Edvardsson.

Per an agreement that his Father had made years before, the Hyspian people were promised sanctuary within Norland for the span of Four years until they would be able to establish their own settlement. After a discussion between Caedric and Antonio, a majority of the Hyspians have began taking refuge within the capital city of Norland.

Life in Norland and the Hyspian Schism

Life in Norland was generally peaceful for the people of Hyspia, and some even began converting to the Red Faith. Despite this, the House of Altamirano continued to persist that Antonio should not convert to the religion of Norland and stay true to Canonism. Previously Antonio had been partially raised within Norland and had already become accustomed to their religion, and he began to believe that the Red Faith could provide a more promising future to the Hyspian folk. He also developed the belief that the Red Faith perfectly complimented the warrior ways of his people.

After several discussions with Caedric I, Prince Antonio came to the conclusion that converting to the Red Faith was the best option and he believed that Canonism was giving them nothing but blank promises. With further conversations between Antonio and Caedric, he decided to speak with the High Keeper and convert. Antonio's advisor council was heavily split with the Altamiranos and other devout canonists to heavily protest the Prince's decision, while House Mendez and the majority of the Hyspians decided to back the Prince's choice, as they held their Country above religion. Antonio was later officially converted by Alisa Camian, the High Keeper of the Red Faith.

Almost immediately afterwards, the Prince promised that the Canonist hyspians would be allowed to resume their worship. Nonetheless, he removed Francisco Altamirano as regent for fear that he may use his power to contest the Prince, and appointed Carlos Mendez as the new regent. Antonio's fears were realized, and Lord Altamirano rallied his family and the remaining Canonists to leave Hyspia and Norland. While Antonio did not mind at first, it was the following letter the Altamiranos wrote to the Pontiff that sparked tensions to near warfare. The Altamiranos had written a letter to the Pontiff seeking shelter from Antonio, and High Pontiff Owyn III responded by excommunicating Prince Antonio and urged all Hyspians to abandon him. Almost immediately afterwards Antonio denounced the entire governmental structure of the Canonist church and proclaimed the Excommunication had no meaning, as he was not of the Canonist church. It was this action that sparked the Prince to take action against the Altamiranos after having been lenient beforehand. He marched a small retinue of Hyspian soldiers to the town of Osanora, where the Altamiranos were taking temporary shelter.

The ensuing Standoff at Osanora consisted of both sides trading insults and attempting to negotiate, with Prince Antonio reasoning the Altamiranos had nothing to fear in the first place while Francisco claimed that Antonio would attempt to oppress the remaining Canonists. After having a brief meeting with the Baron of Osanora to ensure that if conflict were to happen it would not be targetted towards Osanora, the Altamiranos fled the town to Karosgrad in Haense. Fully aware that going into a canonist nation was a death sentence, Prince Antonio led his retinue back to Varhelm and gave a passionate speech to his men. This speech consisted of promises that Hyspia "Was and forever will be" a place of religious freedoms, and that the Altamiranos were acting treasonously.

He also hyped up his men by speaking of Hyspian patriotism and that the founding fathers of Hyspia would be smiling on them for upholding the ideals of Hyspian Continuation. The Schism eventually came to a partial end after the leaders of both factions met and discussed the Treaty of Hyspia, which stated the House of Altamirano would cease their claim as 'True Hyspians' and would be forbidden from associating with the Prince or his loyalists. This temporarily ended the schism for roughly two years.

The Sorrow Years

Soon after the Schism had paused Antonio was put under pressure to find land for the Hyspian people to settle permanently, and Antonio therefore continued speaking to the Norlandic government. Some Hyspians soon began to believe Norland was using them for political gain and many brought their objections directly to Antonio. Despite criticisms, Antonio kept faith in Norland and eventually he came to an agreement with the Crown of Norland.

This agreement would give Hyspia the abandoned Radaghastian town of Nedvedmor and the right to use traditional royal titles in exchange for fealty under Norland. Antonio accepted this deal with the approval of the majority of Hyspia and the first few settlers began heading north to the new settlement. The time frame between the cease-fire and settlement of Nedvedmor is often looked at with sadness and is referred to by Hyspians as The Sorrow Years despite the time frame being relatively short.

The continued Schism

Very soon afterwards, word of Francisco Altamirano being crowned as a claimant king in the land of Sutica reached the King. This report enraged Antonio severely, who immediately began plotting to storm the keep in which the claimant stayed in. Not long after, Antonio would find himself the father of Cesar II of Hyspia, which he decided to name after his Father. His time with his newborn sons would be cut short, as only a year later the claimant Francisco would be captured in the Battle of Ostradt and executed personally by King Antonio.

This execution of a Claimant, albeit a canonist cardinal, set in motion a chain of events that led to the Kingdom of Norland being pressured into ordering the King's execution by its canonist allies, mainly Haense and Sutica. While Guards were sent to bring him in for execution, Caedric I came to Antonio offering his old friend the chance for an honorable death in the eyes of the all-father. After a brief duel, Caedric stabbed Antonio through the heart which killed the young man in a matter of minutes. Even in death, Halvar I ordered his corpse to be hung from the Ashwood in order to make a public example of the young King.

Cultural and Political Information

The Kingdom of Hyspia is mostly composed of Hyspian Farfolk, although Elves, Highlanders and Heartlanders also reside within it.

In Hyspia's humble genesis, the Hyspian farfolk went by no specific religion. But, in Almaris the Hyspians began adopting and increasing their involvement with the Church of the Canon. As of yet, the Hyspians officially recognize the Church of the Canon as the official state religion.

The Crown

The Kingdom of Hyspia, as its name suggests, is ruled absolutely by the King of Hyspia (Hyspanic: Rey de Hyspia). While the King may appoint government officials, the King has the final say on any and all new bills or laws currently in discussion. As tradition, the King of Hyspia is expected to collaborate directly with the populous by hosting events and other. The King has the ability to appoint, and discharge, Archchancellors and Peers as he deems fit for ruling.

The Office of the Archchancellor

The Archchancellor (Hyspanic: Archcanciller) is the second highest position in the Hyspian government. The Archchancellor doesn't only oversee, plan and host courts, but represent the King in diplomatic and state affairs. The Archchancellor can appoint courtiers as well as discharge them. The Archchancellor can only be appointed by the King, and can be discharged at any time if the King wishes to.

The Nobility and the Court

The Nobility, and subsequently the Courtiers, are the legislative sector of the Kingdom. While Courtiers don't require peerage, Noble Houses of Hyspia are granted priviledges amidst the court. Courtiers propose, discuss and vote on current bills to present to the King. Nobility, on the other hand, is granted permission to hold land, but may not field their own independent armies unless explicitly allowed by The Crown. Current Noble Houses include;

For a very long time, the Hyspians often practiced a warrior culture that relied heavily on training from a young age in the ways of warfare. Despite this, they tried very hard not to involve themselves with wars between major nations. While for the most part they succeeded, there have been a few cases of the Hyspians becoming involved in warfare such as the Hyspian-Bandit war and the civil war known as the Hyspian Schism. Recently, the Hyspians involved themselves in a plot to overthrow Princess Gwynevere from her position as Trade Monarch, therefore starting the Third Coup of Sutica.

Wars involving Hyspia

Hyspian National Army

The Hyspian Monarchist Army was the standing military of the Hyspian Nation, formed off the Hyspian Militia. They are often led by the King himself, with the potential of a 'Lord-Marshal' being appointed. The Military is a Meritocracy, meaning command is given based off of experience, not based off of blood ties. The Army itself was founded by King Cesar I after the establishment of Hyspia as a Kingdom. While there is no official Rank system, the Army often goes by an Experience-based hierarchy as explained before.

Those with more experience are given higher duties. During times of war it is expected for Hyspians aged 18-40 to enlist for the time period of the conflict, and then all conscripts are dismissed unless the individual wishes to stay in the Army during peace time. Those who enlist in peace time do not apply to this. The Army was disbanded after Hyspia merged with Osanora and became the Rivera Noble Guard which became tasked with guarding the Rivera Family. The RNG was then reformed into the Hyspian National Army where it resumed its duties to Hyspia as a whole.
