Humans, known collectively as Mankind or Humanity, are the most common race in the realm. Their origins harken to Horen, the legendary first King of Man. Humanity has traditionally been united in a single nation, variously called the Holy Orenian Empire, Empire of Man, or the Kingdom of Oren. However, over the centuries other sovereign realms have developed, such as the Kingdom of Haense and the Kingdom of Norland. Religion is an important cornerstone of human culture, with the majority of humanity following the Church of the Canon. Other faiths include the Red Faith, the Iman al-Rashidun, and various aengulic religions.

Humanity is a varied group, with much variation in skin color, eye color, hair color, and height. However, there are a handful of traits universal across the human subraces, due to their common descent from Horen himself. Below is the rest of the necessary general information for all humans.

Sub Races

Additionally, Humanity is made up of a variety of so-called ‘subraces,’ but they are not subraces in the sense of how other races have them. Humans only have ‘true races,’ or cultures & culture groups who fit them into three broad categories. These are Heartlanders, Highlanders, Adunians, & Farfolk. Each one is outlined in it’s own post below.

Heartlanders

The Heartlanders are a human cultural group, made up almost universally of those humans who reside within cities and urban centers. This includes both the peasantry & the nobility, all those who traditionally reside within the large cities of man. Nobility & social hierarchy of large importance to a great many Heartland cultures. Good examples of traditional Heartland cultures are Salvus, Renatus, Courland, & others. Heartlanders maintain certain physical features & attributes, said features not universal but largely common.

Highlanders

The Highlanders are a human cultural group, made up of pioneers, yeomen, and all those who choose to live in the rougher corners of the world. Generally of a smaller and more spread population than the city dwelling Heartlanders, they lead rougher lives in the wilderness and on warpaths. The variation in their culture is great, made up of a great many nations & groups who maintain a solid nucleus of population separate from the population centers of the Heartlanders. Good examples of Highlander cultures are the Hansetian, Haense, Raevir, & Norland.

Farfolk

Horen’s descendants have spread far and wide, developing many of their own societies and customs. The denominations of Heartlander & Highlander are but a small, centralized fragment of Horen’s children. They are the Farfolk, a broad term for many different cultures & peoples who have diversified greatly from the original ilk of Horen. These Farfolk often have outlying nations or settlements of their own, distant locations only spoken of or written about. Yet, many find their way to the bulk of the Descendant population, their Highlander & Heartlander cousins. Good examples of Farfolk cultures include the Oyashimans, the Qalasheen, the Karamanoğullari, and many, many others. The term Farfolk is a label used by the Heartlanders & Highlanders, to describe any and all foreign human cultures. As such, the scope of the Farfolk is vast.

Adunians

The Adunians are a racial group who take place amongst Humans who call them brethren. Though distantly related to Elves through the Mali’dun, Adunians are much closer to the human-side of their ancestry. With a highly militaristic history, Adunians often found themselves upon the frontlines of the wars of Oren, striving for preservation and defense of their dwindling kind and culture. Ever since the time of Anthos, Adunians have been spread and further dwindling- a rare sight to see within the modern realms. Due to such, often Adunians are often seen as alien or foreign to their once-close cousins of Horen. Though surviving and making well enough independently, slowly do Adunians find themselves bred out of existence.

Other Attributes

Due to their short lifespan, Humans are often very driven in their lives and are known for accomplishing and unimaginable feats. They are pioneers in reality and in their own mind, and are often intelligent beings with the ability to express themselves and output their emotions in more practical means.

Aging

The Human lifespan is much different to that of any other race, being a short average tenure of 150 years. The Human Race age normally until they are 18, where it grinds to a slower pace until they reach the age of, on average, 80 where they start to age normally again until death. If a human ages this slow though, their aging will hit them full on upon reaching the age of about 80, being accelerated a lot. This is dependent on each human, however, and whilst one human may look to be in his mid twenties at the age of 70, another may already appear as a decrepit old man. This is also dependent on the lifestyle of the human, and will vary between different cultures. A Highlander farmer who works the grain day in day out will look considerably older than a well fed and hygienic Heartlander in the capital city. Nonetheless, while humans can reach the age of 150 as far as we know, it rarely happens, since past the age of about 70 or 80, a human's health starts to decline more and more, many only being a shell of their past selves at about the age of 100, if they manage to even grow that old.

Coloration

The variations in coloration are extreme, but almost always desaturated. They are, for all intents and purposes, the realistic colors of humans. Additionally, purples, blues, greens, and other ‘unnatural’ colors are almost unheard of as far as hair. The most common hair colors range between black, brown, blonde. Red & orange hair are, of course, possible. Skin color varies wildly, as does eye color. The specifics for each ‘cultural’ group can be found on their own relevant page.

Height

The Human height range is 4’8” ft - 6'4” ft. This is a hard height range, as in, no human can go above or below it without accurate roleplay of possible physiological issues or body types that real life humans experience. Different human cultures have different ‘soft’ heights, as in the most traditionally found ranges for their group. However, you can be above or below this. They are simply suggestions.

Weight

The average weight of a human varies greatly based on height, health, & lifestyle. However, a certain ‘healthy weight’ can be found. For a human at the upper height range of 6’6”, 260lbs is the maximum healthy weight that they may have. Your average athlete or soldier would be more around 250lbs, and even that is for the upper height range. Being around 270lbs or 280lbs would be a mixture of both fat and muscle. Should a shorter human be near this weight, or should a human be beyond this limit and 300lbs plus, this is extra weight in fat and does not contribute to muscle mass or strength.

Curses

“Horen, you wish immortality? I will curse you with the opposite, early death for you and your kin. You shall age quickly and die before you experience the fruits of your useless labour.”

Humanity is the shortest lived of all the primary Descendant races. Humans will live a maximum of 150 years, because of the curse of Iblees upon all of Horen’s descendants. They mature, both culturally and physiologically, at the age of 18. Beyond that time, their aging slows as they grow into middle aged adults, older adults, and into true elders. This follows a similar pattern to real life aging, but is stretched over the 150 maximum years a human can live. The different periods of life after maturing, from young adult to very old elder, can be stretched out to fill the bulk of one’s life. This is determined by what part they wish to roleplay the most. For example, an 80 year old human can be a grey haired, but still physically active man. Another human 80 years old can be decrepit and near death. Such is the variation allotted to human aging.

History

Over the years, the Human Race has come great political and organisational leaps and bounds, most notably in its previous held titles as a conglomerated race. The Old Kingdom of Oren, the first of the Human nations, was the northernmost nation in all of Aegis; however, following the fall of Al’Khazar to the undead, it split into three nations. Oren remained the primary and most popular title for the Human empires to come.

Religion

The Human race has officially followed one religion since it’s founding by Horen. Religion is a pivotal part of the Human Kingdoms and Empires throughout history, and is often the tide in great wars which pushes the current in either direction.

  • The Church of Canon

Having existed since the Human Kingdoms foundations, the Church of the Canon was initially known as the Temple of the Faith and was formed by King Horen I after he was contacted by the Aenguls and granted the prophecy of his line, and given the Scroll of Virtue. He served as Head of the Faith until his grandson, Owyn Godwinson, came to power after the successful overthrow of his tyrannical and traitorous uncle, Harren the Defiler. Under Owyn, the first head of the Church was officially appointed, however the nascent clergy lacked the presence of an official hierarchy, and for centuries the Church kept faith powerful and prevalent primarily under the Horen dynasty.

Eventually the Horen line grinded to a halt, their last scion abdicating the throne to be replaced by the House of Perea. For years the Church grew redundant and mistreated as three usurper kings passed by, though held unity through the St. High Priest Everard. After the undead onslaught and the fracture of the original Kingdom of Oren, only Renatus continued to adhere to the principles set by the Faith.

In modern times, however, the Church of Canon worships the work of The Creator and the Aenguls and Daemons under the omnipotent and architect of the universe, progenitor of humankind. The Church is currently headed by the High Clement II.

  • The Red Faith

The main religion of Norland is referred to as "The Red Faith". It is similar to the Canonist religion in that they both believe in a singular god. Within the Red Faith however, people do not pray directly to the All-Father but rather to a group of deceased Norlanders of note known as "paragons". The Norlandic culture teaches that the All-Father protects them from the Long Dark. The long dark is simultaneously an extremely complicated but extremely simple concept. In essence the Dark is that which the All Father battles against in his Grand Purpose. The Dark being that which occurs at the end of all things and the death of the All Father on high.

Norland has always upheld the Red Faith except during the short reign of king Jevan Ruric. The dismissal of the Red Faith from Norland angered many, even those outside of the nation. Often times a misunderstood religion, it had faded into obscurity long before Jevan's reign, only for the nation to welcome it once more with Arthas Ruric's return. His teachings were vital to the current success of the religion, which has found a new foothold and following.
