A History

Augustus Flay

(History of His Rule)

The Crimson Banquet

Following the death of Augustus Flay; Tiberius Blackmont, his eldest son and heir was declared Lord of the Dreadfort. Tiberius was one of the more charismatic of the siblings. However, he was often seen as dim witted and incapable of following in his father Augustus’s footsteps.

Tiberius’s rule was considered peaceful and uneventful; a stark contrast to the reign of his father. He was well reputed for his lavish appetite, by the end of his reign he had driven the house to near bankruptcy. The men who had served under Augustus had become restless. A former bannerman, Xander convinced Tiberius’s younger brother to seize the throne. At a banquet, Lucius poured poison into Tiberius’s wine. As Xander declared a toast Tiberius took a sip of the wine. Tiberius was killed nearly instantly as he drank the wine.

Fighting broke out as accusations were thrown across the hall. Yet, none but the conspirators themselves knew who was responsible. By the end of the night the fighting had reduced the Dreadfort to rubble. Lucius named himself Lord-Regent until his nephew and Tiberius’s son, Gladius was of age to rule.

The Battle of Cloudwater Bridge

The Flays found new beginnings, Lord-Regent Lucius Blackmont became a direct vassal beneath Oren under the rule of Emperor Horen V. They settled upon the coastline just outside of the crownlands and began the construction of a new Dreadfort. Beginning anew, a house that was once known as thieves and criminals grew to that of Oren nobility. Lucius was well regarded as a leader, he was more subtle and guarded than his father had been.

At the same time on the other side of Oren the Order of the White Rose led by Peter and Thomas Chivay began to rise. The White Rose took power, quickly becoming one of the most powerful groups in the history of Oren. Lucius was seen as weak, allowing the White Rose to gain so much influence without opposition. Lucius, however had drawn his plan. As the conflict between Uruguan and Oren began to grow he revealed his ultimate betrayal. The Flays would pledge allegiance to the Dwarves in the event of an invasion of Oren. He hoped to play both sides, his ultimate plan to ascend House Blackmont’s position. As the Dwarven Nation advanced on Oren Lucius held true to his plan and betrayed Grand King Thorin Grandaxe. He led a flanking force from the back while the White Rose began their assault on the front. Lucius framed himself as Oren’s savior, and reassumed the house’s old name, House Flay. He was named Lord Justicar of Oren and helped plan further advances into Dwarven territory. He was promised a kingdom carved from the conquered land.

Lucius was left in a comatose state from a hunting accident. His reign ends and his youngest nephew, Quintus, was left to care for him.

House Flay

Although now defunct, House Flay remained one of the most domineering houses in Oren, spanning through countless generations and years. You can find their original history and posts [1]

Customs

Perhaps the most notable custom of House Flay was their practice of skinning their enemies alive, or rather flaying them. Soldiers hanged these trophies as a show of their glory. These rotting husks of flesh were seen as a sign of military merit, and the more a soldier had the more respected he was.

Within the upper echelons of House Flay, many shroud their more devious nature, utilising a silver tongued wit to escape the most dangerous encounters. Though soldiers of House Flay are known for their ruthless appetites, over the years, they have further learnt to appreciate the importance of subtlety and deception.

Responsibilities

Becoming a soldier for House Flay is taxing both physically and mentally. Tasks often are of a violent and immoral nature, including but not exclusive to: intimidation, robbery, murder and torture. Nothing is off limits to a Flay man, if he knows what is best for him.

Goals

The men of House Flay have but one will, that of their leader - the Lord of House Flay. What he has in priority is known only to him truly, but the household and those who lead it have always been known to have an affinity for chaos and corruption. Their lust for power is unparalleled in the Kingdom, and their brutality is not matched by any other force that serves the King.
