The Holy Oren Empire (HOE) was one of the largest nations in Asulon and Anthos. Known also as the First Empire or the First Orenian Empire, was forged by the Horen dynasty of emperors in Asulon from the Human kingdoms of Renatus, Hanseti, Seventis and Salvus. It conquered many other nations and races in Anthos, and attempted to conquer several more. The ruling religion of the Empire was The Faith. With the disbandment of the Order of the White Rose by Grandmaster Edmond Brunswick around the year of 1415, and the collapse of the House of Horen, the First Empire's military prowess was severely damaged, allowing a joint offensive of Dwarves, Elves, Orcs and Kharajyr to lay waste to much of the inner Empire, resulting in the proclamation of what would later be the Holy Kingdom of Ruska and the rise of the Carrion dynasty.

History

See histories of the Kingdom of Renatus, Realm of Hanseti, Salvus and Seventis for more information.

Asulon

The Holy Oren Empire was created following the expansion of the Kingdom of Renatus. Godfrey I of Horen returned to the Kingdom and took his place on the throne. Under his rule Seventis was annexed by Renatus after suffering an outbreak of the Plague. Salvus was defeated following a war that pitted them against a large coalition and also became part of Renatus. When Hanseti surrendered in war against Renatus all of the Human lands were therefore reunited. The Human nation was given the name the Holy Oren Empire, a reference to the religion, history and politics of the new nation, and it began to adopt a patriarchal view and sense of militaristic duty to unite the scattered realms of humanity.

The Holy Oren Empire continued to expand. It was ordered by Emperor Godfrey that any Human settlements that refused to submit to the rule of the Oren should be taken by force. The Empire was forced to flee Asulon along with the other nations.

Elysium and Kalos

The Empire continued to flourish on the islands of Elysium and Kalos. In the former it occupied a strategic place near the Monk Docks.

Anthos

The Empire established itself in the east when Anthos was settled. It underwent a period of expansion in which many nations and peoples were either made part of the Empire or obliged to become vassal states, including Malinor. After many notable figures of the Empire left Anthos and a series of wars against the Empire began it collapsed into a number of smaller kingdoms.

Settlements in the old lands of Anthos

Abresi

The capital of the Holy Oren Empire in Anthos. Abresi was ruled by the Emperor himself. One of the most populated cities in Anthos and covering a large surface area, the city is noted for its towering walls and an efficient guard force maintaining them, as well as housing some of the greatest civic buildings ever constructed by humanity, amongst these being its cathedral and its Colosseum, where jousting and tourneys were commonplace.

Ard Kerrack

One of the strongest castles ever constructed in the history of man, Ard Kerrack was the fortress-capital of the Imperial Kingdom of Kaedrin, a creation and subject of the Holy Oren Empire. Never once occupied by an enemy force or successfully besieged in its history, it was the home of the House of Chivay and the Order of the White Rose, and a symbol of human hegemony over the other Races.

Aldersberg

The "Industrial Capital" of Oren, located in the Duchy of Savoie, the lands belonging to the Holy Church of the Creator. Run by Count Hadrien de Sarkozy. Former home to the merchant Toveah Goldman before his death.

Kingston

The capital of Salvus in the Holy Oren Empire. Kingston was one of the largest cities of the Empire. It was located closer to the Anthos Highway and received more travelers than Abresi. For a time the city was closed as crime rose rapidly.

Kralta

The town which is known to be the home of the Raev people, lead by Marquis Siegmund Carrion in the March of Raev. The town is built without the use of architects and the architecture and infrastructure are sporadic and rural. The village is known for it odd inhabitants and large peasant or strelt numbers. Standing high above Kralta is the home of House Carrion, the Krelmstad, a massive cobblestone castle standing upon a plateau.

New Ager

Village outside of Abresi. Named after the town of Ager in the Empire-in-Asulon, it provided many of the same functions as its namesake, including providing wheat and other crops to the capital.

The Empire included the former lands of four nations and contained many unique settlements.

Arethor

Arethor was the capital city of the Holy Oren Empire. Established from ruins discovered when Asulon was first colonized, it was steadily developed. The main city contained shops, houses, Saint Everard Cathedral, the Palace and Library within the city walls. The city was the largest in all of the Holy Oren Empire and one of the largest in Asulon. People of all types congregated in the city, from peasants to nobles. Many of the shops and businesses contributed to the booming business of the city. The city was found in the east of the Empire. Docks in the east connected Arethor to other sites in the Holy Oren Empire such as the Holy Lands, and other parts of Asulon as well.

Ager

A peasant village, Ager was south of Arethor. It was surrounded by wheat fields worked by the citizens. Ager was strategically surrounded by several mountains, bordering Hanseti. Ager was notable for being affected by the poisonous fog from the Realm of Hanseti, located to the south.

Ildicia

A small castle town southwest of Ager. The main economic output of Ildicia was due to logging. This town was notable for being the headquarters of the short-lived Monastic Order, which saw its untimely end when abolished by the Church.

Ildon

Ildon was a major town in the west of the Empire. The town was part of the land under the stewardship of House Elendil. Ildon is notable for its proximity to the border with the Empire of Urguan, making it a prime staging area for the Empire prior to the Human and Dwarf War, which was resolved before combat actually took place.

Mireton

A small village in the west of the Empire. Mireton was built in swampy land that led to the unique feature of sod roofs for the buildings.

Solace

Solace was the capital of the Kingdom of Salvus. It was one of the largest cities in the Empire and was known for its trading of wheat and ale. It was mostly a peaceful town that was protected by the Gladiants, a group formed by Prince Lancel in year 50. The city went through periods of boom and bust over the many years in Asulon. Solace was destroyed by the war between the Salvians and Renatians. After the Hightower family took control of the city the Emperor Godfrey gave orders that the city should be restored and rebuilt

Westport

Located in the far west of the Empire, Westport was a mid-sized settlement. The population was mostly employed in logging and in the imperial military.

Political System

The Holy Oren Empire was ruled over by an Emperor, who had total and final authority on all domestic, military and economic Imperial affairs, serving as the Empire's autocrat. Nobles were given authority over their lands to provide a spread out and efficient government. The Emperor was aided by those in his Privy Council who acted in the capacity of advisers.

Military

In addition to a complex, large-scale levy-auxiliary system drafted from the landed nobility, the Holy Oren Empire was protected by several professional military organizations. These included the Order of the White Rose, a religious-militant group that defended and served the Empire and Church, the Teutonic Order, an ancient Order of warriors living in Hanseti that date back to Oren's early history. and the Chapter of the Lion, a sect of knights and footmen that protected the Crownlands.

Noble Houses

The upper class of the Empire was divided into separate Houses, a family that reined with a noble title such as Baron, Count, or Duke. There were a few Noble Houses in the Empire, each with a different standing. Imperial Houses were those that controlled the Holy Oren Empire. Royal Houses were those that held Kingdoms within the Empire. Greater Houses were those that held duchies in the Empire. Noble Houses held a barony or county, Unlanded Houses were those that did not possess land, and Exiled Houses were those banished from the Empire.

Final state

With the collapse of the dynasty of Horen and the Order of the White Rose, the Empire was severely weakened, resulting in the Great Orenian Exodus to the distant lands of Aeldin around the year of 1415. A coalition of Dwarves, Elves, Uruks and other lesser races were able to seize the advantage and launch an invasion of the crumbling First Empire, causing its capitulation and the ascension of the Carrion dynasty, whose leadership over Orenian affairs would later be referred to as the Second Empire.

Those who left in exile appeared to stray from the time continuum of the rest of Oren, and would later return only just in time to make way into the Fringe. The return of the Exodus is largely seen as a demise in the history of the Carrions, as they were unseated from their autocracy over Oren and returned to dominion over only the Raevir people and a few others.

Since arrival in the Fringe, the mistakes of the previous regimes have been rectified, with Peter Chivay, the former King of Kaedrin launching a series of bold political maneuvers and, with the assistance of the Church of the One True Faith, proclaiming Himself the Emperor of the Imperium of Oren - known now as the Third Empire.
