Biography

Early Youth

Franz Nikolai de Sarkozy was born on the 11th of the Horen’s Calling, 1741, to Peter Victor de Sarkozy and his wife, Elizabeth Suffolk. Given his father’s position as Minister of the Treasury, the young Franz was given a fine education, being groomed for a future in Imperial Civil Service. At the age of ten he served as an assistant to Edyth Ruric, head of the Department of Labor, a position he held until the age of fourteen.

Known to be a passionate, if withdrawn, youth, Franz sought a means by which to fight for his country in the ongoing Rubern War. The opportunity presented itself in 1755 when his uncle, Sir Henry de Sarkozy, a mercenary in Orenian employment, took him as his squire. As the war was coming to a close, Franz saw little action, save for a few sparse skirmishes, and soon departed after two years. Because of his father’s position in the Empire, he received an officer’s commission in 1759. Although his service in the Imperial State Army was unremarkable, his capture by bandits in 1765 left him with debilitating injuries, including the loss of an eye, which prompted his discharge from the ISA.

Political Beginnings

With his ISA service being cut short, and his father’s scandals in the treasury disgracing the family, Franz found himself without a clear career path moving forward. His saving grace came in the form of Jonah Stahl-Elendil, the new chairman of the fledgling Josephite Party. Jonah and Franz had become fast friends during their shared time in the ISA, and Franz had gained some small renown as an author with his works Dinner at Karloman’s and The Good Son, the former of the two being awarded the Petrine Laurel of 1760. Seeing potential in his friend, Jonah offered him a place among his inner circle as both a campaign strategist and a Josephite candidate for the House of Commons. Franz accepted, helping the Josephites achieve victory in the Election of 1768. Serving in the Commons from 1769 to 1774, he proved himself a stalwart Josephite and a capable policy developer, but lacked skill as a legislator. Knowing his shortcomings, he decided against running for office again, instead serving as a campaign manager and strategist for the Josephites, a position that better-suited his abilities and allowed him to focus on raising a family.

Still affected by his injuries from his time in the ISA, Franz joined the Kaedreni militia during the Sutican War, knowing that Owynsburg would see relatively little violence compared to Helena or Hangman’s Keep. However, he still fought in a few small raids in and around the city and made a few contributions to its defenses. When his wife, Marie, died in 1778, leaving him to care for their two children, he withdrew to the manor of his distant cousin, Ostromir Tuyvic, rarely emerging for the next five years.

In the Stahl-Elendil Ministry

Once again, Franz’s good friend, Jonah Stahl-Elendil, proved to be his savior. Jonah, having been appointed Vice-Chancellor in 1778, had performed excellently within the esteemed Basrid Ministry. When Simon Basrid retired in 1783, Jonah was named his replacement as Archchancellor. Needing a Vice-Chancellor himself, Jonah turned to his old friend, appointing him to the position. Jonah’s pick of Franz was controversial, given the latter’s lack of executive experience and lengthy hiatus from politics in general, but the pair’s strong friendship allowed them to manage the Empire effectively. Early into his time in the Stahl-Elendil Ministry, Franz became a vocal proponent of expelling the Kingdom of Haense from the Empire, an idea that had been circulating around for some time.

At the Archchancellor’s request, Franz ran for the House of Commons again in order to secure a seat for the Josephites. He won a seat in the Election of 1787, holding a place in the Diet that he would not lose until his retirement from the House of Commons in 1809. Much like before, Franz’s time in the Commons was of little note, but he did play a greater role in directing and developing Josephite policy.
