The Ferrymen are a group of charitable bandits formed by Antonyous Helane to serve the common people of Almaris. They would rob and plunder the rich and give their loot to the poor. To the rich they were villains, some may even say terrorists, but to the poor they were saviors from the unrelenting oppression of the nobility. In times of war, the Ferrymen would often be employed to serve as mercenaries for whoever bid the highest. The group quickly gained renown for their incredible fighting prowess, winning battles in which they were outnumbered 5:1. By the end of their reign of terror, the Ferrymen were a group that striked fear into all who lived on the continent of Almaris.

History

Origins

The Ferrymen were founded by the Ferryman on Almaris. The Ferryman's mission was to create a group dedicated to serving the unfortunate and oppressed. He went out and recruited the most credible, fair, and judicious men he could find and created the Ferrymen with them. Among many of these mere recruits became legends such as Antonyous Helane, Banjo, Diome, and Brick. As the band grew, it became more than a petty road bandit group and instead began to loot and attack capitals of rich nations. In their spectacular entrance to the world of fame, they conducted 'Even-out Evening' which was a series of simultaneous battles in multiple nations across the continent, all proving to be fruitful. Their man base of operation was in the Grand Kingdom of Urguan.

Early Almaris

The Ferrymen continued on their raiding spree, mostly targeting the nation of Oren and their hording nobles. Time and time again the Ferrymen proved to be victorious at hugely outnumbered odds. It seemed near impossible to beat the might of the Ferrymen. The Ferryman felt satisfied with this and felt as if the world might have learned their lesson, to be fair and judicious, and the Ferrymen went into hiding.

The Return

Out of nowhere the reign of terror that the Ferrymen imposed on Almaris began. The Ferrymen raided frequently and were indiscriminate in their actions. Everybody on Almaris knew somebody who perished from Ferrymen raids.

Traditions

Despite the majority of noblemen, merchants and whatnot staging their kind to be excessively rapacious, spite-ridden and a disgrace to society. Not all are unforgivable. We, the Ferryman offer redemption to those who show compassion and self-reproach upon death. Each and every person in the band carries a Ferryman’s coin, the passage to the seven skies: Upon demise, the unfortunate one will rise on the opposite side of a lake to their rightful layer of the seven skies, where a boatsman will only allow you aboard his boat if you can pay his toll. The toll being a singular ferryman’s coin, most will remain on the ill-fated side for eternity, gazing on for everlasting reflection on how they should have lived their lives differently.

The Ferrymen are enlightened, merciful folk, all being in possession of at least one of these coins. So when a scandalous, wicked noble or merchant wallows in the jaws of death, said Ferryman may grant them passage through to the seven skies. It is the purest form of mercy, where the Ferryman will place their coin into the mouth of the man, or woman at death’s door. They may choose to keep the coin in their mouth, granting them passage to the skies. But most will not plead, but instead endure their last moments of their life still ill-natured, spitting the coin out and nullifying this final act of mercy.
