The Felsen Coup was a coup which occurred in the year 1568, in Felsen, the capital of the Holy Orenian Empire. Infuriated by Niklas tau Roiye establishing himself as leader of the city's military, against the wishes of Watch Captain Markese de Rolle and his men, the Felsen Watch invited Dreadlandic forces into the city and attempted to capture tau Roiye and other city officials. The successful escape of tau Roiye and resistance from the Nauzica Brigade turned the attempted arrests into a full-blown revolt. The Felsen Watch and the mercenaries moved to secure the city as Imperial forces gathered from across the Crownlands to recapture it. Orenian loyalists among the Felsen Watch let the Imperial forces into the city, but ultimately the rebels repelled the Emperor's army and restored control over the city. Despite this, the Watchmen knew they couldn't hold out forever and abandoned the city, establishing themselves as a mercenary company in the Dreadlands. Remnants of the Watch would later fight under the leadership of Jacque Staunton in the Coalition War, comprising a crucial portion of the armies which would successfully topple the Fifth Empire.

Prelude

Felsen Watch Captain Markese de Rolle, and his fanatically loyal watchmen, had long been trying to increase their power in the Imperial City. Electing their captain as Mayor, they declared Markese "Governor of Felsen" and repurposed the old town hall(and former palace) as the "Governor's Palace". Although the legality of these moves was questionable, Markese accepted his new title by right of popular acclaim, and further moved to increase his power by establishing the Citizen's Militia--a group of volunteer civilians willing to take up arms for the city in time of need. The Militia, like the Watch, grew quite large and was, most importantly, loyal first and foremost to Markese.

These moves concerned the Imperial Administration, who feared the "Governor" would try to seize power and establish a dictatorship in the city. To combat his overwhelming power in the Imperial City, tau Roiye was established as Marshal of the City--which would not only make Markese his subordinate but, crucially, also put the Militia directly under his control. This move infuriated the Felsen Watch, who demanded their captain do something about it. Markese obliged and met with leaders of the Dreadlands in secret, hiring them to aid him in the capture of tau Roiye and the suppression of any resistance it might cause.
