Empire of Man.png Empire of Man

The Empire of Renatus (High Imperial: Imperium Renatum), is a rump state of the former Empire of Man, occupying the Imperial Crownlands and about half the vassals of its predecessor, the Empire of Man. Centered around the metropolitan hub of Helena, the Empire of Renatus is a large, militarist, and multi-cultural nation located in the northwest of Arcas. Whereas the Empire of Man once claimed to be the realm of all mankind, the title has since been relinquished by Renatian monarchs due to the divide that has encompassed the Empire.

History

Downfall of the Empire of Man

The waning years of the Imperium Hominus were marked with instability and apprehension as the Emperor had secluded himself from the general populace, reveling in debauchery and sloth as he locked himself within the Imperial Palace. Over the years, faith in the Emperor had gradually declined, with many vocal citizens taking to the streets. Emperor Antonius I refused to take any hard line stance on the myriad problems that beset the Empire, and instead delegated delicate tasks to his subordinates. His absence in Imperial society was further compounded by a spontaneous desire to pilgrimage to the fabled lands of Aeldin. It is rumored that during his leave he had a revelation which would lead him to pen the address, "A Return to Dust", which sought to release all of the Empire's constituent realms from loyalty to the Horenic monarchs and dissolve the Empire of Man.

The Question of Succession

However, during the absence of Emperor Antonius, the disillusioned citizenry of Helena, Renatian nobles, and soldiers of the Imperial Legion, hailed a new ruler and proclaimed Remus Godfrey of the House of Horen as Emperor of Renatus. It was through his will, not Antonius, that the Empire be disbanded due to a secessionist movement encompassing the lands of Ves, Leuven, and Haense, who proclaimed support for their own emperor, Joseph I of the House of Horen-Marna, as Holy Orenian Emperor. Immediately, the newly founded and the revived state were at odds, with numerous skirmishes breaking out upon between Renatians and Orenians as the two entities sought to solidify their domains. It is because of this brotherly infighting, that Godfrey officially declared the Empire of Man null, as he believed that they did not deserve the right to the name with disunity rife throughout the human realms. In the year of 1715, the Empire of Renatus was declared.

Culture

The Empire of Renatus proudly boasts itself as a home for all Heartlanders and Highlanders alike. Within the walls of the nation's capital, Helena, is a melting pot of Waldenian, Batavian, Auvergnian, and small pockets of Raevir cultures. With the collapse of the Empire of Man, a resurgence of Renatian culture has sprung from the city of Helena and has rapidly spread to the outlying territory. Renatian men are noted for their love of hunting game and wearing pelts as trophies and status symbols. As well, Renatian society is heavily warlike, and the Empire is seldom at peace with their neighbors.

Religion

Following the dissolution of the Empire of Man, the High Pontiff Everard V made his support vocal for the cause of Joseph, Holy Orenian Emperor. Through his own volition or political pressure, he excommunicated the members of the Horen-Pertinax dyansty and declared them anathema in the Pontifical Proclamation of Excommunication, Denunciation, and Affirmation of 1715.

As a result of the abandonment by the Canonist Church, the controversial High Pontiff, Siegmund I, made his return to the Imperium Renatum. Initially disposed off due to his actions against the grandson of Aurelius I, the High Pontiff declared his position valid still due to the dissension of his Synod's vote against him. Within the War of the Two Emperors, Siegmund I placed his loyalty with Renatus; The High Pontiff would lead the religious opposition against the current Canonist Church, declaring Godfrey III as the rightful Emperor.

Following the success of the Empire of Renatus against Joseph I, attempts at reconciliations were made between the Canonist Church and the Empire of Renatus. Firstly, the Canonist Church would organise a meeting with Siegmund I on hopes of ending the schism of the Church. This resulted in the agreement to end the schism through a new and mutually elected High Pontiff, such to be Daniel VI. Nonetheless, Renatus would still reject the Canonist Church's attempt at reconciling until their demands were met as reparations for the Church's siding with Joseph I. These demands included the denouncement and trial of Everard V for his actions against Renatus, including, but not limited to, the excommunication of the Pertinax line as well as the call for the blood sacrifice of Godfrey III. Thus, Daniel VI would rescind Everard V's Pontifical Proclamation of Excommunication, Denunciation, and Affirmation of 1715; he would, as well, call for the trial of Everard V by the Canonist Church as demanded. Negotiations between the Canonist Church and the Empire of Renatus continues still, many noting the strain and tension between the two entities despite the official ending of the schism.

Social Organization

Notably, the citizens of the Empire are divided into five distinct social classes: The peasants, merchants and artisans, the gentry, the nobility, and the royalty.

The Peasants perform much of the hard labor within Imperial society. They perform jobs such as farming, construction, fishing, mining, etc. They hold few privileges and rights and are heavily repressed.

The Merchants and Artisans are either skilled craftsmen or they sell the wares of others. They make stable income and live relatively secure lives.

The Gentry are regarded as the warrior elite of Imperial society, the knights of the Crown. They are afforded many privileges such as governing a small fiefdom in the name of the Emperor, taxing the populace, the right to trial by combat, and the right to bear heraldic arms. In return, they are to raise their banners should their liege call upon them.

The Nobility is the established upper-class consisting of those with social birthright. Their lineages date back centuries and their name holds much weight in the Empire's affairs. They possess a high degree of affluence as well as privilege.

The Royalty consists of the Emperor, his consort, his heir (the Crown Prince), and the rest of the House of Horen.

Government

The Empire of Renatus is an absolute monarchy following lateral laws of succession. The Emperor holds paramount authority in the realm on all matters. However, the Emperor typically maintains a privy council of close advisors, whom he may delegate many tasks to or to act in his steed.

Law and Justice

The Empire follows close with the laws of the preceding Imperial States, and models its courts after its example. Without a unique legal system of its own, the task originally was delegated to one Alexandre d'Aryn - who had previously compiled an unfinished code of law for the Kingdom of Marna. However, the Ashford took the document to his grave, and none have yet succeeded him in its creation and publication. Although the original manuscripts do still lie untouched within the Imperial Treasury.

In the year of 1686, Emperor Aurelius sanctioned the creation of the Consilium Magnum de Imperiale Corona elevati Godefridus - otherwise known as the Imperial Parliament - to propose, scribe, and vote on legislation. The body consisted of Lord Temporals, selected land-owning nobles within the Empire, Lords Spiritual, selected clergy members under the Crown, the Imperial Privy Council, and elected Prefects. The Imperial Prerogative of the Emperor was key to the functioning of this Parliament, which placed the monarch supreme. Only with his assent may a piece of legislation pass through its halls.

With the dissolution of the Empire of Man in 1725, came a resurgence of Renatian values. The Imperial Parliament was officially dissolved with full legislative and executive power returning to the hands of the Emperor.

Security

To ensure the Empire's sovereignty and to maintain order within the capital's borders, the Empire of Man relies upon the Imperial State Army of The Empire of Renatus. The Imperial State Army prides itself on military might and discipline. The State Army, colloquially referred to as 'the Legion' is a permanent and professional fighting force of skilled soldiers from all corners of Renatian society. Though conscription is not practiced within Renatus's borders, many youths are drawn to the Army with the prospect of serving Empire and Emperor, and doing right for their family name. Distinction through military service is often regarded as the quickest way to climb Renatian society and curry favor among Imperial Court. The Imperial State Army is organized as such:

The Imperial Renatian Legion

  • Carolus Brigade; named in honor of Carolus Horen. The brigade forms the primary infantry fighting force of the Crownlands.
  • King's Renatian Artillery; otherwise known as the 1st Siege Battery. This unit comprises experts of siegecraft and operators of trebuchets, onagers, and ballistas.
  • King's Renatian Engineers; otherwise known as the Sappers. May take on demolition roles in the battlefield or help construct various tools of siegecraft.
