The Elven Cold War was a rivalry between the Dominion of Malin, the Conclave of Gladewynn, and the Isles of Aegrothond. The conflict was spurred by the assassination of King Abelas Caerme'onn.

History

During the Bronze Rebellion, three elves rose to prominence: Kairn Calithil, son of the preceding High Prince; Khaine Csarathaire; and Belestram Sylvaeri, grandson of the last High Prince of Malinor, Eleron Sylvaeri. In the years that followed the Reconstruction Period after the war, they rose to distinction as members of the Dominion's reformed government.

However, growing rivalries between the trio would cause a fissure to form within the decaying Dominion of Malin, which only grew more and more vicious as the years went on. The three agreed to set the precedent that each reigning royarch would serve only one term and not return to the title. However, Belestram had expressed the intent that he be named Kairn's successor, following the tumultuous War of the Loftywoods and the subsequent annexation of the Barrowlands. When Kairn resigned from kingship, he had not told his council, nor any of his contemporaries; without a word, he simply walked up to Abelas Caerme'onn and placed his own crown upon the younger elf's head before turning to walk off and sit on a bench in the city square.

After receiving confirmation from the Upper Council, Abelas was deemed the heir to Elvendom. He decreed that Belestram Sylvaeri would become his Lord Diplomat, and that Arwenia Ithelanen had cemented her position as Annilir - the leader of the elven military order known as the Virarim. At the time, rumors of a war against the Kingdom of Kaz'Ulrah - a fief presided over by the Frostbeards that had rebelled against and dissolved the Grand Kingdom of Urguan - began making their way around. Belestram advocated for the war and attempted to persuade King Abelas that it was in the Dominion's best interest to intervene, despite the counter-argument from Arwenia and Kairn that the country was unprepared for another war. Abelas stated that if the Kingdom of Renatus agreed to stay out of the conflict, he would support the Urguani claimant.

Under that pretense, the Elder Alliance of 1679 was signed. Eventually, though, the realization dawned on Abelas that the Renatians would stand side-by-side with the Frostbeards as they had in the past. The royarch made it apparent that the Dominion would not sally to the aid of Urguan, and would instead stay out of the war. Enraged, the Urguani confronted Abelas in his own halls, where Atandt Irongrinder challenged him to a duel to the death. The two's dispute ended quickly with Abelas' head being severed from his shoulders. In response to this, Kairn Calithil returned from the countryside to seize the city with his bannermen and Frostbeard allies. The rebels were chased out, and Belestram Sylvaeri was placed under arrest. After wiping the blood off of the fallen king's crown, Kairn approached Renn Vaeloryïs and placed it on her head.

During the succeeding trial, Belestram was challenged by Kairn to a duel to determine whether he was responsible for what had transpired. He refused initially, so the two reached the consensus that they would have their champions fight for them. Kairn, Kaz, and Aneir'in Ithelanen elected to be the dead king's champions. Belestram picked his own son, Fëanor Sylvaeri, and two random mercenaries to be his. As they were palpably superior, the Alderfolk won the bout. Upon drawing first blood, they spared the lives of the three combatants and sent them home. Kaz then turned to address Belestram, saying, "As you are a man of the quill, I will not abide by your ability to write lies and mistruths. So, I shall claim your hand," before severing the elf's hand from his wrist and exiling him from the Dominion.
