Elissa Staunton (née Mauntel) (1697–Present) is the Queen-Consort of the Kingdom of Courland, she was noted to be wise and sharp-tongued by her peers. Her arranged marriage with King Percival II of Courland made her the Queen-Consort.

Her marriage with the king started off as a one-sided love, producing three possible male heirs, and then a princess. It wasn’t until her later years that she returned the love to her husband.

Biography

Early life

Born in 1697 in Curon to Bjorn Mauntel and Thalia Mauntel, the young girl received an education benefiting that of a woman of her rank. She was sharp-tongued and very smart for her age. She spent most of her younger years sewing dresses, selling them and reading books, earning a large sum of money, most of which being spent by her eldest son in her later years when he acted as regent while Percival and Elissa were bedridden with sickness.

Adulthood

Elissa spent most of her early adult life lavishly, supported by her vast amount of wealth acquired earlier in her life. She often took baths in gold tubs, purchasing many different gowns and a lot of jewelry. She kept making more money, furthering her wealth. Some suspect that part of the reason her marriage to Percival II was due to her vast wealth. Percival gave Elissa vast amounts of gifts and truly loved her, while Elissa didn’t return the love until the birth of their first daughter, and last child, Emmeline. She funded many of the crown jewels for Courland.

Marriage

Percival and Elissa wed in the year 1730, it was a grand and glorious ceremony, her brother, Gilian Mauntel walked her down the aisle. Her mother and father were dead at the time of the wedding.

Elissa wore a luxurious dress, it was creme colored with jewels embedded in the sleeves, a pattern on the corset that depicted a royal fleur-de-lis, and a “one mile long veil, being carried by at least thirty-handmaidens.”

As Queen Consort of Courland

Elissa gave her husband three possible heirs to the throne, Tobias, Rickard, and Henry, none of which she cared for. Elissa despised her sons, and tolerated her husband, not returning his affections until the birth of Emmeline in 1737, when she was forty. Apparently, after the birth of her precious daughter, she said “Nevermind, I’m not having anymore.” She cherished her daughter, giving her many gifts and treating her significantly better than her three sons.

Elissa didn’t do much as Queen-Consort, instead just funding the kingdom and commissioning the crown jewels both before and after she and Percival awoke from their illness. Before this, she was famous amongst the court for hosting tea parties and entertaining the ladies at court. Elissa focused much more time on tea, books, and poetry, and cakes, something that confused her daughter, Emmeline, the princess saying “How one can eat cake, I’m not sure”.

Elissa is the first Queen-Consort of the re-established Kingdom of Courland.

Appearance

Standing around 5’4, Elissa would have bright blue eyes along with a pair of glasses. Her hair a dulling and aging brown. Her skin would be a pale color, with wrinkles, a sign of old age. She would often be seen wearing her famous purple robes with golden embroidery and many gems. Under the robes, she donned a white gown covered in pearls and golden beads. Her head often adorned a majestic ruby and diamond crown made of gold like no Queen had ever worn before. Many had often asked whom she had commissioned the crown from, but she never told a single soul. Along with this, she donned a ruby necklace and a golden wedding ring on her finger.

Mentality

Personality

The old Queen-Consort is a rather grumpy and perpetually annoyed woman, often whacking her grandchildren when they speak out of line. She’s a devout canonist and despises her grandchildren through Tobias.

Family

Elissa’s parents died from a young age, making Gilian, her brother, the head of the house. He arranged the marriage with Percival II, and as a result, her relationship with him was strained.

As stated prior, Elissa was not a fan of her husband, Percival, just doing her duties as Queen-Consort and providing male heirs. She has a horrible relationship with her sons and their sons, whereas her relationship with her husband improved after the birth of Emmeline. Emmeline has been called the Queens ‘precious jewel’.

Trivia

The name Elissa means ‘GOD is satisfaction’ Her favorite treat is lemon cakes, which she prefers to eat with a cup of tea. She isn’t a fan of the color green, even once saying “One would think that a Queen of Courland would wear green, but I never much liked the colour.” She is often viewed as the Shadow King of Courland.
