The Crown of Renatus-Marna was a hereditary absolute monarchy situated on the highlands to the west of the Baltas River. Tucked away amidst the center of Atlas, the nation played a pivotal role in policy and foreign affairs across the continent, eventually forming the Empire of Man. The nation was renowned for its well regimented military, and possesses a booming lumber and mining industry.

History

For countless years, humanity and the Imperium Sextus lay decadent. The Imperial state was a shroud of its former self, clinging on to the glory of past Emperors. From the line of Pertinax, came Canonius Horen, son of Carolus. He, who wished to restore order and glory to the Horen name, set sail from Aeldin and quickly came ashore on Axios, with a small retinue of fiercely loyal men and proclaimed himself 'King in Renatus'. His arrival on Axios caused much controversy. However, with his growing support, it would appear that it would be impossible to rid of him. At last confident in his band of followers, he staged a march upon Adelburg's Royal Palace, where he wrestled control of the Imperial City from Emperor John VI. With the hub of humanity firmly within his grip, the Imperial title of Holy Orenian Emperor was dismantled, the Renatian banners were hoisted over the city, and he was crowned as Aurelius I.

However, there was much dissent within the ranks of the established nobility. Frederick Victor of the House of Horen-Marna began to lead a loyalist resistance against Aurelius's Regime. This ultimately climaxed in what was supposed to be a meet between both parties in the neutral grounds of Bastion's ruins, but turned violent when the Loyalists drew arms upon the Reiter-backed Renatians. What resulted was a crushing victory for the outnumbered Renatian forces. Because of this, Loyalists forces concluded that they would be unable to defeat Renatus's legions on the field, thus causing the nobility to break off and form the Apostolic Kingdom of Marna. Relations between the two nations would remain cordial at best. However, a sense of Canonist unity arose when the two human kingdoms joined together in the Third Crusade against the Kingdom of Norland, resulting in a swift Canonist victory.

As the end times encroached upon Axios, Aurelius and his followers embarked once more on the very ships they had arrived in Axios on. Travelling with the rest of the Descendants, the Renatians made landfall upon the northern coast of Atlas. However, from the moment they arrived, they immediately began on campaign in the countryside; unable to erect a permanent settlement. All the while, Frederick I Pius, son of Frederick Victor and cousin to King Aurelius, constructed his domain further to the south, in the western highlands. Eventually, the two crowns would join in union, come the abdication of Frederick I Pius. His abdication is said to be due to his own realm's impending decline. As Frederick I Pius relinquished the throne, his own heir was passed over, in favor of his cousin, Aurelius I, King of Renatus. As such, the two crowns were joined together in the new state of Renatus-Marna. The capital of this new nation was determined to be the cosmopolitan hub of Senntisten.

Haeseni & Human Oppression (1653-1662)

The controversial birthing of the Kingdom was still a recent memory in the minds of many; for regardless of how historians put it - their foundation was laid upon the bloody brickwork and a dead Emperor; a child at that. An unconventional regime that differed drastically from the rump-states of the Orenian Empire - for that reason there was always bound to be tensions between the other human sovereign states.

This was displayed during a time period known as the “Haeseni Oppression”, where the other human nations (Curon, Santegia and Haense) disavowed Renatus and boasted their large numerical advantage in their efforts to strong-arm the fledgling state. Yet, little came of this except for tension till the Kingdom of Renatus had requested their titles of Krajia returned to them from Haense. An argument erupted between the two parties, and the Haeseni envoys would leave the meeting with a void where their heads used to be.

This event, alongside a heated situation in which Haense called for the execution of Prince Antonius Horen, had forced the other human nations to play their hand and in doing so, formed the “Czena Confederation”. The premise of this pact was a defensive alliance between the signatories - however, in actuality, it was used as a means to dissuade and strong-arm the Kingdom of Renatus on any diplomatic move they tried to make.

After a few brief months of the Czena Confederation imposing themselves upon the Kingdom of Renatus, a formal reaction was made - a brutal raid upon the capital of Haense in which 20 Renatians slaughtered 60 men from the confederation; this would mark the official start of the Czena Conflict in 1653. The war would be fought with neither formal siege nor skirmish, but in a series of smaller bouts in the field, the Kingdom of Renatus always outnumbered, they still managed to secure a triumphant victory. This caused the collapse of the Czena Confederation in 1656 with the Duchy of Curon defecting and signing a military alliance with the Kingdom of Renatus.

The Kingdom of Renatus, with newfound energy and accompanied by similarly new allies in the name of the Dominion of Malin, the War Nation of Krugmar and the Kingdom of Kaz'Ulrah had decided to maintain their war against Haense regardless of the collapse of the Czena. This war was the official start of the Atlas Coalition War in 1657, a mere year after the end of the Czena Conflict.

However, despite the initial intentions of the war being focused on the Kingdom of Haense, the war target had changed to the Kingdom of Norland after they had allied with the Kingdom of Haense to form their self-proclaimed super alliance known as the “United Southern Alliance”, this comprised of:

The Kingdom of Haense

The Kingdom of Norland

The Reiver Mecenaries

The Silver State of Haelun’or

The war lasted 5 years, ending in 1662; it was a simple war with the opposition struggling to come close to matching the Renatus-formed Northern Atlas Alliance. The end of this war marked the status of Kingdom of Renatus as a super-power for the first time since its formation of the First Empire in Anthos, with its Kingdom spreading far and its allies numerous. This time period was also an exemplary situation for Renatus to showcase its talented leaders who displayed their prowess during the war - such as:

Prince Charles Horen

Prince Antonius Horen

Prince Tiberius Horen

An Eternal War (1664 - 1669)

During the waning years of the Atlas Coalition War, the bandit group known as the Reivers had began to make their presence known on the continent. They provided little other than being a nuisance to the Kingdom - for while they could hold no match against the Knights of Renatus instead, they sat upon the roads and preyed on those who could do little to defend themselves.

From 1664 onwards it became apparent to the pertaining government of the Kingdom that the bandits began to brand themselves as mercenaries, who would fight for the highest bidder. In response to this, Charles Elliot drafted an official declaration; a response to the bandits who so brazenly drew arms against the citizens of the Kingdom.

  • An Eternal War[1]

After the missive had been proclaimed to the realm, the war known as Bandit War would ensue as the Kingdom marched upon the several Reiver-owned towers that were sparsely scattered amongst the roads. By 1667 the Reivers were left with a dwindling portion of land. It was during this period that Eimar The Fat would come to blows with the famed Prince Antonius, a feud formulated over a denied honor duel; eventually, Antonius would end the life of Eimar the Fat in the year 1667.

“Kill me now for if I live I shall wage an endless war” -Antonius Horen

In response to this, the wife of Eimar declared rebellion to the Kingdom and relinquished her lands to a returning Staunton - Tobias II Staunton, thus beginning the period of the Staunton Uprising (Or, the Second Atlas Coalition War)

The Kingdom of Courland was quickly reformed officially, with a coalition of states dissatisfied with the Renatian regime formed, initially comprising of:

Kingdom of Courland

Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska

Confederation of Hammers

Duchy of Rivia

Duchy of Nevaria

Reivers

However, the Duchy of Curon later betrayed the Crown of Renatus-Marna and sided with the Stauntons after Prince Antonius laid hands upon their Duchess in an aggressive manner.

Renatus, of course, called their own allies to their aid as they marched upon the rebelling territories to reclaim them - resulting in the famous Siege of Redpeak in 1668. Shortly after this siege, the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska held their coronation for Franz I of Haense. However, this was interrupted as a horde of Renatians poured in to the throne room, slaughtering everyone within - including the newly crowned King, thus ending Haenses involvement in the war after Sigmar Barbanov signed a ceasefire. The war officially ended two years after the initial siege, with Renatus also claiming the cities of Cyrilsburg & Ashwood in their campaign. This bolstered the Kingdoms territory to include the majority of central-Atlas and along with it their ever-growing influence over the continent as a whole.

Culture

The Kingdom of Renatus-Marna proudly boasts itself as a home for all Heartlanders and Highlanders alike. Within the walls of the nation's capital, Senntisten, is a melting pot of Waldenian, Batavian, Auvergnian, and small pockets of Raevir cultures. In particular, the nation is going through a resurgence of Waldenian culture and identity. As such, the new uniforms of the King's Renatian Legion are consistent with those of Waldenian landsknechts.

Social Organization

Notably, the citizens of Renatus-Marna are divided into five distinct social classes: The peasants, merchants and artisans, the gentry, the nobility, and the royalty.

The Peasants perform much of the hard labor within Renatian-Marnatine society. They perform jobs such as farming, construction, fishing, mining, etc. They hold few privileges and rights and are heavily repressed.

The Merchants and Artisans are either skilled craftsmen or they sell the wares of others. They make stable income and live relatively secure lives.

The Gentry are regarded as the warrior elite of Renatian-Marnantine society, the knights of the Crown. They are afforded many privileges such as governing a small fiefdom in the name of the King, taxing the populace, the right to trial by combat, and the right to bear heraldic arms. In return, they are to raise their banners should their liege call upon them.

The Nobility is the established upper-class consisting of those with social birthright. Their lineages date back centuries and their name holds much weight in the Kingdom's affairs. They possess a high degree of affluence as well as privilege.

The Royalty consists of the King, his consort, his heir, and the rest of his household.

Government

The Crown of Renatus-Marna is an absolute monarchy following lateral laws of succession. The King holds paramount authority in the realm on all matters. However, the King typically maintains a privy council of close advisors, whom he may delegate many tasks to or to act in his steed.

Security

To ensure Renatus's sovereignty and to maintain order within the capital's borders, the Crown of Renatus-Marna relies upon the Royal State Army of the Crown of Renatus-Marna. The Royal State Army prides itself on military might and discipline. The Royal State Army is organized as such:

The King's Renatian Legion

  • Carolus Brigade; named in honor of Carolus Horen. The brigade forms the primary infantry fighting force of the Crownlands.
  • Ram's Head Brigade; named after Count Eimar 'the Ram' var Burgundar, garrisoned and stationed on the borders of Götha.
  • King's Renatian Artillery; otherwise known as the 1st Siege Battery. This unit comprises experts of siegecraft and operators of trebuchets, onagers, and ballistas.
  • King's Renatian Engineers; otherwise known as the Sappers. May take on demolition roles in the battlefield or help construct various tools of siegecraft.
