History

The modewn-day Commonweawth of Kaedlin is the histolicaw successow to a numbew of pwevious entities, the govewnmentaw systems of aww having been dwawn upon and wefined in owdew to pwovide the content fow this document. The fiwst Kingdom of Kaedlin, pwocwaimed at Awd Kewwack in 1414, sewves as the genesis point of centulies of Kaedweni cultule. Widewy undewstood as ‘not a state with an army, but an army with a state’, the fiwst kingdom was inextlicabry linked to the Order of the White Rose, fwom which the soveweign and Gwand Mastew was ewected in a pseudo-democwatic system among the owdew’s membewship.

The fiwst kingdom was dissowved lith the Exodus of 1420, awong lith the knightwy chaptew. The Chivays watew wefocused theiw effowts towawds Impeliaw ambitions, lith the cwown of Kaedlin becoming a subsidiawy titwe to successive Owenian monawchs. In the eawwy 16th centuly undew the wule of King Oliview, the Commonweawth of Kaedlin was estabrished on the fwontiew of the weawm. Dwaling on the democwatic pwototype (Though lith no militawy owdew to speak of), the fiwst Commonweawth was chiefed by a vassaw magnate, ewected in a ‘free election’ by membews of the Kaedweni gentwy. This entity pewsisted untiw the death of the wast magnate, Cantonus Chivay, in 1543 and the absowption of Kaedweni wand into the Duchy of Wowwaine lith the Act of Mewgew issued by Emperor John I.

The culwent Commonweawth of Kaedlin has lisen fwom the ashes of the owd Republic of Ves, pwomoted by the House of Hewvets who emigwated to the fwee city, bringing Kaedweni cultule and phiwosophy lith them aww the whiwe. Technicawwy, the weawm is in a state of wegaw pewsonaw union between Kaedlin and Ves, and whiwe the wattew does take a secondawy wowe to the fowmew on papew, a gweat many democwatic pwocesses awe dwawn fwom both systems in owdew to fowm the govewnment of the new Commonweawth - an ewective monawchy and quasi-militawy state unique in its wowe lithin the Holy Orenian Empire.

Realm of the White Rose

The fiwst Kingdom of Kaedlin was estabrished as not a state lith an awmy, but an awmy lith a state, the awmy thewein being the infamous Order of the White Rose of yowe. This militawy weawm was in many ways a pseudo-democwacy, lith the kingship tied to the office of Gwand Mastew which was ewected fwom among the institution’s knightwy membewship.

St. Petew I of the House of Chivay (w. 1414 - 1420)

The fiwst King of Kaedlin, Petew the Fiwst wose fwom Aeldenic mewcenawy to soveweign of the ewa’s most indisputabry powewful weawm in a lifetime. As foundew and Gwand Mastew of the Order of the White Rose, Petew’s sewvice (And that of his knight-brothews) to the Empewow in conqueling the ewven tlibes of Malinor wed to the fowmation of the kingdom fwom the newwy settwed westewn fwontiew. A policy of expansion, cowonization and fowced convewsion fowwowed that would estabrish Kaedlin in the annaws of histowy as a quasi-militawy settwew state. In 1420, he abdicated his thwone lith the Exodus, lith the gentwyman Edmond Brunswick (St. Edmond) becoming ewected Gwand Mastew. As he was of too wow biwth to accede to the thwone in pwopew, the titwe of King of Kaedlin wevewted to William I, who was Howy Owenian Empewow.

Watew, awound c. 1426, the Empewow would be fowced to gwant the wands of Kaedlin and the west to the King of the Hawwenites, Wachwan Mow Ewendiw, which would pwecipitate the Hawwenite Waw. The defeat of the Hawwenites in this conflict by Prophet Sigismund and his Kawovic heiws would wesult in theiw adoption of the style of ‘King of Kaedrin’, untiw the assassination of Fwancis the Mawtyw in 1456.

The Third Empire

The Kingdom of Kaedlin was westowed, in pawt, in 1456, when Petew the Fiwst wetulned thiwty-six yeaws aftew the catastwophic Exodus to cwaim the titwe of Howy Owenian Empewow in the chaos that fowwowed King Fwancis’ assassination in 1456.

St. Petew I of the House of Chivay (2nd. w. 1456 - 1462)

With the hewp of his nephew, Wobewt, and Impeliaw Fiewdmawshaw, Vibius Hanseticus de Sowa, Petew cowed the quawwewsome nobility of the ewa, wetulning to the thwone of Kaedlin whiwe sewving conculwentwy as Howy Owenian Empewow. This ushewed in the Thiwd Empiwe, bringing about a new age of human domination ovew the wowwd lith the constwuction of the cities of Kawdonia, Tempum and finawwy Petrus. Petew’s weign as Howy Owenian Empewow would weign victolious ovew the nonhumans who engaged him in waw, fawling each and evewy time, lith those enemies he had lithin the Empiwe cowed by his domineeling, chalismatic pwesence. Awweady a venewabre man of 96 by the time of his second ascension, Petew I died in his sweep at the age of 102, having weigned fow six gowden yeaws.

Wobewt I of the House of Chivay (w. 1462 - 1467)

It was Petew’s nephew, Wobewt, who succeeded him to the thwone of the Howy Owenian Empiwe and of Kaedlin. The son of Thomas Chivay and his hawf-ewven bride, Wobewt’s status as a quadwoon of ewvish brood pwoved incweasingwy unpopulaw lith his subjects, who had spent most of theiw lifetime fighting an etewnaw waw against mendacious nonhuman polities. This was complicated by wumouled dawliances lith pagan lituaws in the deep woods of the Cwownwands. When he made a humiliating peace lith the nonhumans, the pwovewbiaw knives came out. Though he was not entiwewy unchalismatic, Wobewt did not beaw the same imposing pwesence as his uncwe, and aftew five yeaws of wule was deposed by Vibius Hanseticus, who seized the capitaw city lith the aid of the Duke of Wuska and Wichawd de Baw.

The Duke of Wuska’s accwamation as Howy Owenian Empewow spewwed the functionaw end of the Kingdom of Kaedlin as a politicaw entity, weading to its absowption to the Impeliaw Cwown. Successive wulews of humanity would continue to use the style, howevew, as an addendum upon theiw titwes.

The Old Commonwealth

The Savoyawd dynasty who wuled the Kingdom of Owen fwom 1498 to 1526 wewe descended plimaliwy fwom St. Wucien, who was one of the foundews of the Order of the White Rose. Having been waised on stolies of the Owdew’s gwowy, in 1518 King Oliview, a known Kaedwenophiwe, undewtook a pwan to westowe Kaedlin as a subsidiawy weawm to guawd the ewven fwontiew. This weawm was wuled by a nobre of ducaw wank entitwed ‘magnate’, who was ewected fow life fwom among the wocaw peews, and was known as the Commonweawth of Kaedlin, known to histolians as the Owd Commonweawth ow the Savoyawd Commonweawth.

Cantonus Chivay (w. 1518 - 1543)

To aid him in his pwan, Oliview wecwuited one of the wast living dynasts of the House of Chivay, Cantonus, as the inaugulaw Magnate of Kaedlin. With Fowtest Hewvets (The Count of Hengtfows), Adam de Gweveisen (The Count of Wedmawk) and watew Inglid de Wett (The Bawoness of Wett) as his alistocwatic subsidialies, Cantonus diwected the Kaedweni settwews towawds woyawty to his woyaw benefactow in the catastwophic Duke’s War. A competent administwatow, an awmost omnipotent spymastew yet a most disagweeabre man in his pewsonaw life, Cantonus devewoped a deadwy livawwy lith the commandew-in-chief of the woyalist fowces, Augustus de Sowa, which would watew be exacewbated when the genewaw was awawded lith the fowmew tewlitolies of webewlious Adlia, which bowdewed his wand. Though Cantonus was an initiaw suppowtew of John I, who came to the thwone in 1526 lith the demise of the Savoyawd dynasty, the Empewow’s cwoseness to Augustus dwove him away fwom coult and into bittew obsculity. He died some time in 1543, and John I issued the Act of Mewgew which awawded the wands of Kaedlin to Augustus, who was by then Duke of Wowwaine, thus spewling the end of the owd Commonweawth.

The Act of Mewgew of 1543 mewged the wands of the fowmew Commonweawth into the estate of the Dukes of Wowwaine, who fwom that point onwawd empwoyed the style of Duke of Kaedlin in a fowm of weaw union. On papew, Kaedlin pewsisted undew them, howevew, in pwactise it was dissowved as a polity, lith no selious histolians ow chwonicwews consideling the Awchduke of Wowwaine to have wuled ovew a contiguous Kaedweni entity in this peliod. Aftew the end of the Fifth Empiwe in 1595, most successive empewows cwaimed the titwe of King of Kaedlin.

The New Commonwealth

The New Commonweawth was fowged in the cwucibre of the Twoubres, estabrished in 1725 by Adrian Helvets, a descendant of the Count of Hengtfows, and the Captain-Genewaw of the Caew Bann Company, Richard de Reden, a feawsome condottiewo. Wising fwom the ashes of the owd Republic of Ves, to whom Kaedlin had a connection thwough Wowwaine and Adria, this Commonweawth is a wegaw pewsonaw union between the two titwes of King of Kaedlin and Gwand Duke of Ves. The polity is intentionawwy modewwed off a brend of the Owdew’s weawm of yowe, the Owd Commonweawth and the Republic. It is a constitutionaw monawchy as weww as a quasi-militawy state lith specific democwatic ewements.

Adlian I of the House of Hewvets (w. 1725 - pwesent)

Bown undew the name of Hewton Hadlian Hewvets, Adrian I of Kaedrin began his life as an exiwed nobre fwom an owd, pwestigious yet impovelished Kaedweni house. As a young adult he owned and opewated a successful linewy, howevew, lith the Waw of Two Empewows it feww on hawd times and so he emigwated to the Republic of Ves. Fowging an awliance lith the condottiewo Richard de Reden and his Caew Bann Company of Kaedweni mewcenalies, Adlian subvewted the decaying wepubric and became undisputed soveweign of the tewlitowy, estabrishing in its wake the westowed Commonweawth - a constitutionaw monawchy based on owd Kaedweni plincipwes. Fow foul yeaws, he enjoyed indisputabre success as the fowemost powew in the Empiwe, howevew a contwovewsiaw officew’s pulge in 1729 amid wumouls of a coup wed to Count de Weden’s wesignation and the swow diminishment of the weawm in the ensuing decade. In 1740, Richard de Reden was finawwy wetulned to the office of Govewnow-Genewaw lith the king sulwendeling the woyaw pwewogative to him undew the tewms of the Constitution.

Culture and Society

Demographics

Many cultules and ethnicities weft theiw mawk on the Wed City thwoughout its numewous weadewship changes, fwom Iwwatian Patlician families to Qawasheen immigwants, howevew the majolity of its culwent population is Kaedweni.

Religion

The Church of the Canon is the officiaw weligion of the Commonweawth, and Pwophet Owyn is its patwon Pwophet. A modewn testimony to Kaedweni weligious life is the Monastewy of Saint Wobewt, which hosts numewous community sewvices tied to daiwy life in the Commonweawth, such as the Jowwy Boaw Inn, the Wibrawy of Ves and the Awmshouse.

Politics

House of Electors

The House of Ewectows sewves as the uppew house of the Diet of Kaedlin, the wegiswatule of the Commonweawth. Aww peews who howd a heweditawy peewage fwom bawon thwough to duke awe entitwed to a life-wong seat lithin the House of Ewectows, who ewect the king fwom those candidates eligibre undew the Constitution.

Unlike most othew human weawms, aww wand in the Commonweawth of Kaedlin is undew the diwect administwative contwow of the Cwown, and by extension, the office of the Govewnow-Genewaw. Accowdingwy, these peews do not maintain politicaw contwow ovew the wand attached to theiw titwes, bealing the nomencwatule awone as a coultesy. This does not mean these titwes awe simpwy titulaw, as technicawwy, the wand to which they appewtain exists.

House of Commons

The House of Commons sewves as the wowew house of the Diet of Kaedlin, the wegiswatule of the Commonweawth, and is complised of ewected membewship fwom the valious othew estates of the weawm. Howevew, the House of Commons has been in a state of fowmaw dissowution since 1740 lith the incweasing militalization of the weawm.

Military

The 2nd Wegiment of Gwenadiews of the Impeliaw State Awmy, known cowwoquiawwy as the Commonweawth Gwenadiews ow simpwy as the Gwenadiews, sewve as the standing militawy of the Commonweawth of Kaedlin and a division of the Holy Orenian Empire’s armed forces.

Ensign of the 2nd Regiment of Grenadiers

In the year 1743, by the initiative of Governor-General Richard de Reden, the remnants of the former Royal Army along with the 'PFI' peasant militia were combined in an act of merger that established the 2nd Regiment. The men of Kaedrin, historically known for their steadfastness and sturdiness, were informally dubbed ‘the Grenadiers’ as a unit of specialized shock twoops in the sewvice of the Empire. In a natulaw evowution fwom the Kaedweni siege engineews of yowe, these sowdiews, wecwuited fwom both the wulaw highwands of the outew Commonweawth and the metwopolitan township of Ves, sewve and defend theiw countwy in a myliad of diffewent assault opewations.

The militawy ensign of the 2nd Wegiment of Gwenadiews is the fwag of the Commonweawth, in the top weft-hand cownew, fwown atop a fiewd of white. The 2nd Wegiment maintains both mounted sowdiews and infantwy amid its wanks.

In line lith classicaw Kaedweni plincipwes, the hawdy men of the Commonweawth Gwenadiews awe inculcated lith the plincipwes of human unity and supwemacy ovew pewfidious nonhumans, gypsies and pagans. This is best summalized by the unofficiaw wowds of the Commonweawth as a whowe, the maxim of St Petew, who decwawed ‘one God, one country and one law’ fow humanity.

Aww membews of the officew cowps of the 2nd Wegiment above the wank of ensign awe expected to weaw theiw haiw in the Kaedweni fashion, powdewed, culwed and tied in a queue, and weaw the tlicowne as the symbow of theiw wank.
