Charles Edward (High Imperial: Carolus Eduardus), nicknamed the Diligent, of the House of Alstion was the son of John Alexander and Vivienne d'Amaury and the third Emperor of the Eighth Empire. He inherited the hereditary Johannian title of the Prince of Alstion as heir to the line, along with the Duchies of Alba, Balamena, and Corazon, the former in which he issued to his sister. Spending his formative years in the care of his grandfather, Alexander Frederick, he returned to prominence only at the very end of John VII's reign when he briefly served as his successor before settling his claim to the Imperial throne for the titular Johannian Principality of Alstion.

Marriage

During the years following his resignation of power, Prince Charles entered a courtship with the young Cascadian Matriarch, Duchess Lorena of Augustin. However, severals years into the relationship, the woman wed her cousin, Antony Helane, in a clandestine ceremony—leaving the Princeling bemused, and heartbroken. For a while, his intentions of constructing a homestead for himself and his sister were discarded, leaving him to ruminate a return to Aeldin. It was during this time that the Duchess of Alba reached out to her Horenic relatives in their respective territories, vying for any eligible noblewoman for her sibling. Her endeavors were fruitful, as not long thereafter, the Dowager-Empress Karenina of Alban offered the hand of her unwed daughter, Magdalena Cassia, and sister to Antony, in marriage.

The two were wed in a private ceremony late into the year 1734, issuing two daughters by the name of Henrietta Karenina and Heidemarie Jane.
